How many of us Millennial are unable to speak our regional languages? While its usually rare for a Pathan or a Gilgity to not know their local or regional languages, it is quite common for your city based punjabis. The better the educational institutions get and the higher the class gets, the stigma associated with speaking punjabi increases. If you yourself are someone who is Punjabi but can't speak the language, then probably you were made to look down upon your regional language. This particular sentiment become quite obvious when recently Beaconhouse School System catagorized Punjabi as a "foul language" in a letter addressed to the parents of one of its students. Blatant disregard for an entire regional identity sparked some much heated debate and criticism of the educational institution who stigmatized the very use of Punjabi.
However Beaconhouse is not alone in its role towards stripping an entire generation of its regional identity. The society, including the parents of this generation, has kept reinforcing the fact that speaking punjabi seems uncouth and disrespectful. So we decided to talk to this generation and ask them how they feel about not being able to speak in Punjabi while living in an area where punjabi is the predominant language of the majority population.
