Behind the closed doors of Kenya's rehab centres. Shrouded in mystery and secrecy, not much is known from outside of the facilities. Are they truly centres of healing and recovery for addicts or just another opportunity to steal from unsuspecting families that are desperate to help their loved ones overcome addiction? Waihiga Mutero spent most of her time in these centres at a time she was struggling with alcoholism and her parents were willing to pay anything to see her recover. @@victoriousco I believe it does so little. Parents should spent more time with their children . A lot of parents spend time with their friends and family and leave most of the children’s upbringing to the nannies. Children learn a lot of positive things from their parents because of the level of trust they’ve bestowed in them. Same thing can be articulated for the negatives. I became a young mother, I use to struggle with my little ones quite a lot until one paediatrician asked me how much time I spent with my little ones undistracted. Surprisingly, the quality time was so small, less than hour a day. I would never forget what she mentioned to me, she told me your children would not turn out so well ever,with that amount of time. They would only amount to ‘normal children’ with a lot of social issues. I never looked back from then, started engaging them in every lil thing I did, be it cooking, sweeping, shopping etc. At only 7yrs one of my sons is competing in junior level coding contest internationally and the lil one is doing well in kids short races & chess ! Genes didn’t play a part in this! My husband and I are nothing close to what those kids are doing.Parents should know once you have kids it doesn’t end there, engaging them should take most of your time in a day and life so to speak.

Recovery is such a personal journey... I took my family through hell in my active days but I thank God for the two years of soberiety. Still making amends but one thing I know is that I feel way better today and my children have been a great support.

Im totally horrified,im glad you survived to speak of this,i was lucky to go to a good rehab at Kentmare Limuru ofcourse there were little dramas but it was ok,im 4years clean.

Took someone to a rehab recently and those are the first words I was told "don't listen to them". This was a red flag because of the abuse of psychotic drugs. The pharmacist was the cook...alcoholics are humans, are our children and siblings deserve dignity

Medicine won't get you sober 👍. I am a mental health practitioner, I agree. Psychotherapy is very important in recovery both from SUDs and other mental health issues. A proper balance between pharmacotherapy (if necessary) and psychotherapy.

Thanks for this eye opener.. people need to do very good homework before checking in their L.O into the so called rehabs. I wonder why the govt allow this kind of humiliation 😢. There are very good success cases in some very well organized rehabs so it is best not to rush into any rehab but do a good research

😮😮In the 3 videos Ive watched, there's availability of alcohol in the houses where the kids grew in. Another common factor is a feeling that the parent is not "present" or is unduly harsh or strict.

People should learn to differentiate between psychologists and psychiatrists. Understand there different roles as well. And we have internationally certified addiction professionals in Kenya. One professional can't serve all required purposes. As a country I think we need a lot of civic education on these matters. To know where to seek what kind of help. It is the ignorance of many kenyans that such rogue rehabs are taking advantage of.

@prisillar it's not the access at that age that turns one to an alcoholic! Alcoholism is in most cases a genetic issue and triggered upon consumption. No one ever plans or figures out to be one.

I agree. Although psychological reasons clearly played a significant part, unfortunately at the age of 10, there was easy access to it. And kids always do what you tell them not to. I think this is a critical lesson parents with young children ought to carry from this video, alongside other lessons.

Rehabilitation centres are good and have saved many Lives. They are here to stay. If some have problems then the best forum to address these would be at ministry of health. Present a report with evidence . Feedback is important for quality improvement of any service.
