So basically, what we've learned today is that the hero is being punished for being selfish, and a villain is being punished for being selfless.

Aang willingly ran from his home due to being selfish, Zuko was forced away from his home due to acting selfless - that is a brilliant parallel - I love it! And a fun fact: the way the Avatar is identified by the Air nomads is based on how the Dai Lama is identified.

2:45 some people can sense the barometric charges in their bones. Its especially prevalent in people who already have health problems such as migrains, abnormal blood pressure or arthritis. Which correlates to what she said about feeling it in her joints. 6:57 each nation has a different test to determine who is the avatar. Air nomad way of doing it is actually based on how they choose Dalai-lama in the real world. 13:50 here Iroh repeats what Katara said. Aang gives hope to people in need. And it really puts into perspective all the stuff with Zuko in early episodes. How he hardened himself and embraced the idea of honor to be given to him by his abusive father. 15:11 they are antipods for each other in their flashbacks and in present time. Aang selfishly runs away from his responsibilities, and only now he can accept his new path. While Zuko selflessly defends his people and after being punished for it has to submit to his father in order to regain his "honor".

When I watched this episode for the first time, I've realised something about Aang's backstory To us, all of the events Aang told us (the time before the war etc…) are 100 years old But in Aang's mind, those events only happened like some weeks or months ago ! Poor guy is still in grief and he has to deal with everything

Sea birds often fly inland when they instinctively know there is a storm and I guess the old lady could tell there was a storm by how the change in air pressure was causing pain in her joints

This is generally considered one of the best episodes in the show, yeah Aang's and Zuko's backstory being told together in alternating segments that parallel one another, alongside a present day narrative that makes both if them confront the emotional turmoil presented within the flashbacks is done quite brilliantly I think Also just, showing how Aang and Zuko, though on opposite sides both in regards to the sides of the conflict, as well as the eras they were born in, are ultimately both just kids who unfairly were torn away from their lives as a result of the war

My favourite episode from the first "book" of this show. (Second and third books are even better!). This is the first time the writers fully show how much they can do with these characters in just 23 minutes. Massive drop of lore, and yet it never feels forced. The jokes just work and balance the very dark themes.

Something i find interesting is when people refer to Aang as “the avatar” rather than by his name,, like when that guy said “you’re playing games with him? The avatar should be training!” even though Aang is one syllable and The Avatar is four ig it’s like symbolism for the distance people put between Aang and themselves? Idk I’m not well-read in this subject. But in moments when people could just as easily use his name and get the same point across just fine but instead only use his title? I’m not sure. It’s almost like they don’t view him as a person but instead as something Other… like he doesn’t get to have a normal childhood only people get to have childhoods but he’s The Avatar,, somehow they put him on a pedestal but deny his humanity at the same time? Idk

And here we areee (Had to watch the great divide after putting it off lol) 0:31 :) 3:10 ohh you haven't seen that in media or in real life yet. I've heard it in both, _plus_ my sister has like chronic migraines (she takes meds and yet there's still times she's in bed with the pain of it), and those are also affected/increased with storms. 4:01 almost no one in the country ig 4:19 okay I'm glad you said that 4:26 that's how 7:02 well not abilities, since Aang hadn't tried before 13:43 nothing about the smirking girl yet~ or Zhao being on the other side I only saw snippets of pages, but iirc he was sent (on the assumed impossible wild goose chase alone) and Iroh _chose_ to accompany him. Now that I'm rambling-infodumping-whatevering, I had this thought of maybe.... Wait nvm i cant say it until 3x12 Actually i can say the majority, just not smth about the days/weeks right after. I wonder if Zuko is so...like this, because part of him blamed his Uncle for letting him enter the war room, or not telling him how severely speaking would be punished 16:53 Commenter's have once pointed out -- Zuko apologized to his father, and got burned. Zuko apologized to Iroh, and his apology was accepted. 18:55 to an extent yeah And given the absolute smallest ship possible

This is a fantastic episode, I love the parallels between Aang and Zuko. Zuko's backstory is especially so heartbreaking. He didn't get burned from an actual fight with his father, he REFUSED to fight. He got on his knees and apologized with tears in his eyes, and his father burned him anyway.
