So Lirin and Kaladin both blame themselves for Tien's death but they do so in different ways. Kalaldin blames himself for not being stronger and being able to protect him. Lirin blames himself for being the instigator of his death by antagonizing Roshone as a result he's lost of his will to fight. Essentially Kaladin blames himself for not fighting harder and Lirin blames himself for fighting to begin with.

I wonder if Sanderson didn't make it Navani's book because she isn't a Willshaper... I know he wants there to be one flashback character for each of the 10 Radiant orders, so that may have been why this was Venli's book rather than Navani's. I think Venli could be a great character, but I would've preferred her flashbacks to be in the second half of the series.

Don’t let the haters get to you Mike! Keep being honest with your opinions, that’s what we are all here for! You absolutely hit the nail on the head with this one when you said that the fandom is only willing to accept criticism of Shallan and none of the other characters! I’ve seen the same thing in my experiences in the stormlight communities! Like you, I’m a fan of Shallan! Her and Adolin’s storyline, along with Navani’s are my favourites from this book! To be honest, though I love both Kaladin and Die Hard, I found his sections of this book to be a bit too drawn out and predictable for me. I’d have preferred to have a bit less Kaladin in this book, and a lot less Venli. I also totally agree, Navani should have been the flashback character and her flashbacks would have been waaaay more interesting to me than just re-hashing Venli/Eshonai (a lot of which we already knew from WoR)

I have only part five to go, but I'm procrastinating because it's the last Stormlight new book in probably 3 years, and I'm savoring the last few chapters. I whatched a Brandon video saying the he knows Venli's pov would be percieved as boring, be he needed to tell the story, so I'm trusting the content is necessary. Also have a son on the spectrum, and I really like his depiction of mental illnesses. I thought very heavy on infodumping, and I'll have to re-read several times until I fully understand the fabrials science stuff.

I think both Oathbringer and Rhythm of War suffer a bit from “middle book” syndrome. This one _maybe_ more than Oathbringer? Not entirely sure since I didn’t reread books 1-3 before this one. Also, it’s kinda hard to say without knowing where it goes in book 5. And books 6-10, I suppose, since there’s still one overarching story for all 10 books. Anyway, I still thoroughly enjoyed this book (as well as Oathbringer).

First: absolutely agree about part 3. Some of the worst pacing in a stormlight book so far. I honestly think both Kaladin and Shallan serve for some great mental health rep in different ways. Kaladin's is kinda obvious, because... y'know. Depression sucks (an understatement if there ever was one) Shallan's I think has less to do with her fantastical multiple personalities and more to do with her expectation that she doesn't deserve to be loved, and that if her friends and family knew about her "true" self that they would abandon her. We the readers don't really need to think about that, because she's married to the Ascended Bro to end all Bros, Adolin Storming Kholin. So of course we know she'll be accepted no matter who she is or what she's done. But Shallan doesn't just expect to be rejected, she thinks she deserves to be rejected. I love that her arc this book centers primarily around accepting the love of her loved ones, and not buying into the lies she tells herself about who she is or isn't, or what she does or doesn't deserve. Good stuff.

Yep I liked this part more then part 3 myself. For those who think Shallan is all better now, think again, although on screen she may be portrayed as mentally healed from this point on, she will need to constantly keep working on it to keep from relapsing. Mental health is such a big part of this series, some is of the magical variety, some is what normal people have to deal with. I found the early Kal chapters hard to read outside the action parts, but that's what its like to deal with depression, to know you shouldn't feel like you do, but you do feel like it no matter what. I think a Navani flashback would give too much away too early. The flashbacks do get stronger as you get to the end. Alot of the people going insane over this book atm are doing it more for cosmere reasons then the events of the book imo, so much stuff to read into. Cant wait for part 5 :)

Hey Mike. First off my comma doesn't work on this keyboard so forgive the strange sentence structure. I've been watching your videos for about a year now and I love the personal touches you add through editing but I've never felt the need to comment until hearing your take on Wit's story to Kaladin. I will preface this by saying I probably fall closer to the camp of loving Brando even if he wrote the ABC's so you know the take this all with a grain of salt. But for me I absolutely loved that chapter because Kaladin has/is going through his own personal hell and there is no respite from his own mind torturing him. So for Wit to take the time to give him a moments solitude. A warm meal and a comforting story... Man it just broke my heart and continues to do so whenever I reflect on it. I do realize that at the end of the day that chapter doesn't add much to the story aside from funny interactions between Wit and his Spren and the aforementioned break for Kaladin. But that there is why I love it. (And none of that at all means that my feelings about this scene make it a good scene. It's just why it worked for me :)

I feel ya, Mike. I had a lot of the same problems that you had throughout this book. Flashbacks weren't that interesting and didn't add a lot to the story, part 3 was a bit of a slog, a bit too much science-talk. Still I absolutely loved this book. You're right, part 5 is gonna blow your socks off, but I also loved the whole Kaladin storyline, Navani is great, Adolin & Shallan's storyline was very intruiging. I felt like Sanderson took some of the best parts of his previous books and just took it a step further in this one. The focus on Kaladin's mental health like in WoK, Shallan and the Ghostbloods from WoR and Shadesmar from Oathbringer. Plus, I feel like every book (except WoR) has a part that I find reaaally slow. For WoK it's part 2, for OB it's part 1 and with this one it's part 3. Still absolutely loved it and book 5 will be more to your preference! Really curious to find out what you're gonna think of Part 5.

I know that Sanderson wants Stormlight Archive to be a merging of his Cosmere novels, but this particular part in this particular novel made me realize the barrier to entry into his endeavor. With each new novel, the series becomes less about the story of the characters and more about the story of the Cosmere. And my capacity to empathize with their individual journeys and development decreases. They're not driving the plot anymore--they're feeling more and more like props to which the plot happens. It's starting to feel so incredibly complicated and convoluted now with multiple magic systems and secret societies and caste systems and hidden characters and names & aliases and numerous narrative points of view and exceptions to all the norms he establishes and the ever-growing cast of characters that the joy of reading a good story is starting to get lost in the machine... It's not feeling epic anymore. It's feeling encumbered. I enjoyed Way of Kings because the story was pretty much self-contained and Kaladin's struggle was so engaging and personable within the context of the setting's elements. But now at this point... I had to read this novel with the fan Wiki open all the time. While it's certainly better than the POV mess that was Oathbringer, I feel like this one is at the mercy of the plot's agenda in preparation for the rest of the series.

Sanderson wanted this one to be a Willshaper book I guess which is why no Navani Flashback, Venli choosing a separate path, Kal finding a new path/purpose in his life, Adolin trying to get out of his dad's shadow all play into that theme I guess. The flashbacks were a bit boring because Sanderson ran out of stuff to write I feel which is why he's giving us very little Jasnah,Renarin, Lift ....... I’ve only read the Stormlight Archive and Warbreaker so when I read ROW, I was fine with the Warbreaker connections, it is LITERALLY said, “I’m not from this world”. Then there are the OTHER connections. I figured the sand was from the graphic novels White Sand, then those epigraphs in Part 2 sounded like a Worldhopper talking, with all those new shards, I don’t know, maybe from Mistborn? I guess, then there was that lady with the rings...wow! Sanderson is really pushing it with this one, and I had to read the Final Empire immediately after it! Currently reading Well Of Ascension, but man! When I first got into this series, I was told that you didn’t need to read the others, and it was true to some extent, but now, I don’t know anymore. Sanderson was making it clear the other worlds will come into play in the series and that eventually, at some point, we’ll have to read the whole Cosmere in order to get a full grasp of things!

@@brianmckeefrey1446 EPIC! Of course, nothing can ever beat Stormlight but The Final Empire was just FANTASTIC. Definitely going to The Well Of Ascension now.

man i was feeling like an alien. I feel the same way this is my least favorite stormlight book. I loved the lore and the magic system explanations but the other stuff is so meh compared to what we have seen from Brandon before

Seriously, why couldn’t we get Navani flashback chapters of her relationship between her and Gavilar? Just go through with the idea of making this her book. I would have killed for pre-Dalinar Navani.

Because the series has a clear structure. Sanderson can tweak his structure but not make a big a change as giving one order two books! If he dealt with Navani flashbacks, that would mean two Bondsmith books, and would in turn, mess up the structure of the whole series.

I actually liked Venli in this book, but I somehow felt we didn't get nearly enough of her given that is supposed to be the Venli book... Why couldn't they just cut all the Shallan stuff, did anyone honestly like that?

This book was always bound to fail with the viewpoint characters it focused on. People aren’t as invested in the Parshendi characters and also, people are very lukewarm/hate the flashbacks because for the most part, they felt like filler(to some, not to me, because I saw Venli’s character development through them). I liked the Shallan parts, because of the mystery of the worldhopper Ghostbloods and also, her character arc didn’t have a sense of completion in Oathbringer. With this one, though her character arc isn’t over yet, we somewhat got a sense of completion with it.

I liked it, though I think all the Shadesmar stuff could have been its own book like Dawnshard.

I liked the stormlight stuff too, but I was a nerdy physics major....Also, I watch all your reviews, I think you just aren’t a Sanderson reader. For you, he’s always a B-/C+. Please stop forcing yourself to read stuff you don’t like, and just move on.

Please stop telling people what they like. I was over the moon with praise for books 1-3 in this series and the original Mistborn trilogy so I think you’re being untruthful with saying you watch all of my reviews. I appreciate the feedback and thanks for watching.

Kaladins story and depression is what really gets to me and holds a special place for me in this series I think Sanderson trying to develop parshendi characters via flashbacks is aweseom but i can also understand you view on eshonai and venlis flashback. I am not finding them as interesting as others or as well written.
