The only thing that saved Carlos' life when Sonny beat him was the fact that Carlos did not fight back. Even Sonny could not bring himself to kill a sniveling coward like Carlos.

Interesting point about not tipping off Barzini by taking out Carlo. By letting him live, they essentially used him to mislead Barzini and the other families that they were just moving to Vegas and weren't planning on killing them.

I heard James Caan didn't like the guy who played Carlo. Because he only got the job because he knew someone. And he just plain didn't like him. And that him hitting him with the trash can lid was his own idea 😂 He didn't think he deserved the job just because of his connections. Even Al Pacino had to audition.

3:19-3:27 Many people hate Carlo in the film, but it's hard to deny the wits in his set up that got Sonny killed." I am one of them. I think Carlo is one of the most rotten bleeders in the movie. The wits in his set up that got Sonny is not enough to make me think well of him. Just the opposite.

I don't think Carlo came up with that plan, as he was a failure in everything else, indicating he was not clever enough. Looks like Barzini's idea.

Carlo is Vito's biggest blunder. When Connie returned home with black eye, he should have got rid of Carlo. A stupid guy like Carlo could be dangerous, he should knew it.

But Carlo knew how to make sentences that agree in past and future tenses. That's why he was spared.

Vito & tom talked about Carlo & figured out it was Carlo who did his own planning to make sure that he can have a place in the family business. Unknown to Carlo he never thought he would be sought out. Tom and Michael concocted a plan to make sure Carlo was not to resume his activities ever again. The interesting part this is one plan Michael went with, Tom had planned out perfectly.

Commenters have wondered about Italian versus Sicilian. As of the turn of the last century, around the time many Italian immigrants came to the US, the unified Italian nation was a very new thing. People identified themselves as Sicilians, Neapolitans, Romans, Tuscans, Bolognese, Venetians, etc. Thanks to Dante, Boccaccio, and Petrarch, the modern Italian language is essentially the Tuscan dialect, but other dialects, such as Sicilian, still exist.

Sicily is an autonomous region of Italy, but it has its own culture, traditions, and dialect Sicilians are proud of their heritage and their distinct culture Sicilian is often considered a separate language from Italian. Italian speaker would not be able to understand Sicilian.

If I remember correctly, the book describes Carlo Rizzi as 'one of those weird German Italians.' There are German-speaking enclaves in the mountainous regions of Northern Italy. If he was raised there, he would have no understanding of Sicilian culture and ways.
@beingadeeb2345

@Ubu987 Actually no. The German speaking part wasn't part of Italy by the time Carlo's family moved to US.

it was obvious as a duck carlo was always resentful of the way that the old man looked upon him as a pretty boy punk = it's all in the book , characters like carlo rizzi were more real life than what most people care to admit = he is the embodiment of the old eye'talian wife beater = hence the T shirt called the wife beater

Maybe I'm crazy, but when Sonny was killed, my first thought was that Carlo did it on purpose. I think that was the first thought of a lot of people. I definitely wasn't surprised when he was killed for it. Just sayin'. 😊

Italy was composed of many city states before becoming a country and Sicily was beyond the main body of Italy and so many people considered them separate than Italian. But many would only ID themselves based on their province or city--like Romans vs Sicilians vs Neopolitanos.

Furio in the sopranos even says that he hates Columbus because he's from the north and they look down upon Sicilians which were considered different. So even though it's in the same region they see themselves as separate.
