The habit dates back to the Abyssinian-Adal War, a century-long sporadic military conflict between the Ethiopian Empire and the Somali Adal Sultanate in the 16th century. During the Ethiopians' early Somali defeats, soldiers began consuming raw meat as a tactical measure. As Somali troops moved towards the Blue Nile and Lake Tana, Ethiopian soldiers sheltering from the Somali Adal army began eating raw meat at night. They feared the smoke and flames would reveal their location. This military strategy of avoiding detection became a delicacy during the Conquest of Abyssinia, and Ethiopians' taste of raw meat grew from there!

i hate to break it to you but that is wrong and there are a lots of speculations but one thing that is right is that it is because of war we started to eat rawmeat just to avoid detection and we have fought a lot of wars with outsiders and even eachother before the adal war so it is not because of the adal war we started eating raw meat we have started long before the adal war

African cuisine is amazing from west to east. Unlike what people think, most of the dishes in most African countries have a story of health benefits. I grew up eating moringa leaves. Now the white man just discovered the health benefits. I’d have love to hear about the benefits of eating raw meat from the Ethiopian perspective. I’m confident it has health benefits because Ethiopians are in shape! Let’s stick to our African roots. Great video!

Nice small talk😂 The truth is that southern Ethiopians have always consumed raw beef, and a few hundred years ago the Habeshas copied them. One must remember all these things are just conjured up stories. The most prevalant one though is how in the 1500's* Ottoman snipers kept sword welding Abyssinian soldiers from making fires to cook their meat. But even this story has it's origin based on the Niyyah Kibbeh dish of the middle east, a tale about concerning some Chrsitians taken refuge in Ehden from Ottoman gunners. Withstanding these facts, the Soomaalis have, for seasons other than bad intent, came up with an oral account with differing details: claiming the Adalite Ahmed Gran (an Ethiopian Muslim) forced Ethiopian Christians to eat raw meat.

The history of Raw meat is not what he says on this Video. The Ethnic Amhara who ruled Ethiopia for generations often have to fight the outside invaders to preserve Ethiopia. Because of that the Amhara Neftegna(Armed men) did not want to give their location to enemy by cooking meat with fire. They don't want any smoke the result of cooking meat to tell the enemy where their location was . So ... by keeping this in mind , the Amhara Soldiers ovide cooking the meat and got use to eating it raw . This is the real start of how Ethiopians Eeat raw meat.
