I'm a disabled army combat veteran of the Vietnam Conflict. I was wounded on December 14, 1969, the year John mentioned. It happened a month before my 21st birthday. I spent 9 months recovering in army hospitals in Vietnam, Japan and the United States. John Fogerty has always had a special place in his heart for Vietnam Vets. I exchanged letters with he and his wife Julie. I saw him in concert and he was nice enough to send me a autographed 'Blue Moon Swamp' cd. John is a very nice and humble man. His music will never be forgotten as long as we Vietnam Veterans are still hanging around. LOL!! "When I die I know I'm going to heaven, because I've spent my time in Hell: VIETNAM."

@Shawn Bradley hahahaha good keep reading the Bible, it as legit as any other sacred book from any religion hahahaha, nothing special there. No I worship nothing, I prefer to treat things as they are, I have sufficient self confidence to not need false idols, I know my limits, my defects, my qualities and that's fine. I have a religion, but I keep it to myself and I wouldn't use it as argument for life neither try to show it to others or to make someone else swallow it, religion is an internal thing, it's just a primitive way the human being use to explain things that they didn't understand yet, but the values of some religion are great, so it's good to have one inside.

k3304 I feel bad for all the innocent young soldiers sent to vietnam and all the veterans overall but it was wrong of the US to even enter vietnam to begin with. You know the reason why they went in was because the president made a fake campaign that an US ship was attacked by the Vietkong in the beggining which dragged in the US. Well at the end it turned out that never happened it was just a lie to get involved into the conflict.

I was 10yrs. old at this time 1969. My older brother fought hard to stay out of this war and I was so frightened for him. I know today that the war in Vietnam started an upsetting era of anti-war protests and musicians singing about their feelings of the war was misinterpreted. I'm a student now in The history of Rock - and I picked this son to do my project. I now understand what your song was actually about - "Inequality"

As John said in his book “ She got me to Thaw out “. I’ve been to a lot of his shows over the years and there’s always at least 1 Sign that sez “ Thank You Julie “. The woman is a Saint. Nothing going on today compares to the Vietnam War, so any 'protest' music just comes off as illegitimate and whiny. I wouldn't mind anti-Trump music if it weren't so immature and vulgar and uninspired. Calling the POTUS a fascist or cheeto for the 1000x doesn't do anything for me.

I don't think so. Iraq and Afghanistan are worse than Vietnam. It doesn't seem that way because American troops are better protected and don't get killed so much, and those who got killed were volunteers, but for the people on the other side, it was equally bad, if not worse. Also, the Vietnam war came to an end, but in contrast, the fighting in the Middle East never seems to end.

Well, even if he wasn't in country, at least he served, unlike Trump, Limbaugh, Hannity, Ted Nugent and all those other right wing super patriots, . As someone who was over there (Dan Nang 68/69) I don't hold it against Fogerty at all.

John is both right and wrong - the young people THOUGHT they were angry at the troops and they treated them badly. They even spit on them. But they really were angry at the war and the policy and took it out on those closest.

We the People hire members of Congress and the President with OUR votes, and WE pay their salaries with OUR taxes: Give Peace a chance...."Some folks are born, made to wave the flag, they're red, white and blue, but when the band plays "Hail to the Chief" they point the cannon at YOU! Some folks inherit star-spangled eyes, they'll send you down to war, but when you ask them "How much should we give?" they only answer "More, and More, and More....It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no Senator's son....It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no Fortunate One..."---John Fogerty and Creedence Clearwater Revival, "Fortunate Son"

Soldiers being "asked to go" (to their deaths) is a romantic oversimplification. Soldiers are typically forced to go through all sorts of social pressures, be them economic, legal, political, propagandic, or a mixture of two or more. If people joining to be soldiers said, instead of their oath of service, that they offer their life, limbs, and liberties so that rich men can get richer, that would be ugliest truth ever told. The second ugliest truth told would be when rich men don't stop them. The third ugliest truth would be when the rest of society, especially the mothers, say that they know war is all BS, but there's nothing they can do but pretend to be proudly ignorant, also known as patriotism.

Reading the comments here makes me feel old. I was in Schuster's band with John Fogerty, Doug Clifford and Stu Cook. Doug Clifford threw me on my ass for kicking a spoiled girl in the butt, (Melinda Smith). These guys WERE "Fortunate Sons" living in El Cerrito and Kensington. Yes, two of them went in the inconvenient weekend Reserves to avoid Vietnam and got out 2 years later. They all became millionaires and played some great songs, most of which were "New Orleans Creole songs" by guys who dragged the Main and listened to KOBY on the radio in the East Bay Area. I never figured where THAT came from but it was still good fun and had a great beat. Now all they seem to do is complain, argue and sue. Becoming a famous group is work but it certainly must help if you make it. There were times when I thought I would have liked to have been any one of them but not now. I DID go to Vietnam as an SF soldier and a second time as an officer and helicopter pilot. It was the best, most interesting , fascinating and worthwhile duty anywhere, which is why I went back. I married a Vietnamese, completed college and Law School and lived, apparently, a much happier life than ANY of these guys. Cook used to have a great sense of humor in English class. I hope he hasn't lost it in all the contract strife these guys have endured. I guess even wealthy singing stars can be unhappy.

@@rodsworld9374 Look at the number of comments claiming the war was wrong, you shouldn't learn about it, and leaving the country was acceptable because the rich could avoid it. In 1965 almost no one felt that way. ANYONE could avoid it. My friends on the football team and track teams got doctors to say they had flat feet and several became rich selling real estate. Many joined and just put in for jobs that kept them out of combat or joined the Navy or Air Force. For every 12 guys in Vietnam, 11 were in non-combat support roles and never issued weapons. They were cooks, MPs, worked in the motor pool, post office and PXs. Many were clerks. Almost every Air Force base had a swimming pool, there was waterskiing at Cam Ranh Bay. My high school buddy went in the AF and stayed at a base writing menus for FOUR years in Vietnam drawing hazardous pay. The same guys told BS then as now for Afghanistan which is Voluntary. My Hawaii Helicopter unit did a year there and a year in Iraq without a paper cut. Most made more money than at their civilian jobs and most will be paid PTSD for life. About 6.5 people have died there every year for the last 5 years. Less than bee stings here. I did dangerous work because I was bored and it was exciting and fun. I got shot twice but still didn't want to leave, nor did any Scout pilot.

I guess I misunderstand the lyrics but "Some folks are born made to wave the flag Ooh, they're red, white and blue And when the band plays "Hail To The Chief" Ooh, they point the cannon at you, Lord" Sounds like he is hating on patriots. I don't want to be a blind patriot and hail everything the government does. I think it's terribly dirty what they have done to the military people since the Korean war. After that, all conflicts have been by the Federal Reserve (Contradiction in terms). I love the Constitution and the theory of the USA but we are a long ways from that.
