What made Sidney so great? He delivered on much hyped promise (Just the title of his top 100 players video). No player faced a more difficult mix of expectations, pressure and injuries. And despite all that, he didn't just fulfill the expectations, he delivered BIG TIME. It has to be scripted. Triple Gold Club, almost all individual trophies, youngest captain to hoist the Stanley Cup, Back2Back Conn Smythes, THE GOLDEN GOAL, World Cup MVP, the SO Winner in the first Winter Classic and so much more I forgot right now. Sid overcame every barrier. And not just that. He did it in a way that is unprecedented.

I'd say he's the best player who's entire career I witnessed. I watched a lot of Wayne and Mario. But I remember all the hype of Sid coming into the league. Gretzky was already the greatest of all time before I even got into hockey. Him and Mario were just legends. But watching Crosbys career. Both highs and lows. It's been fun
@chrisg77312 жыл бұрын
He's the best player of all time. You can't take guys and adjust them for different eras, really. Gretzky in today's NHL would get broken in half in 5 mins. He was a stick figure. Sid back in the 80s would've been putting up 500 pt seasons. Ovechkin would've been scoring 300 goals. Your average third liner today would be a star back then. Gretzky and Lemieux dominated their peers far more than anyone playing today. No doubt about that. Gretzky had all that hockey IQ. Mario was gifted all that size and skill. But Crosby is the smartest guy on the ice at any given time, and likely the hardest worker and most competitive. No, he's not the best shooter or stickhandler or anything like that, but he's just the most complete player to ever play. Plays all three zones and makes the guys around him better (many of whom were scrubs for most of Sid's career). I look back fondly on the Rico Fata/Konstantin Koltsov days of Pens hockey. They were losers, but they were my losers haha. But God, Sid has been a fucking blessing on the heels of that shitshow. I remember thinking the Pens' window had closed for them to win another cup with Sid, Malkin, and the guys after those playoff losses to the Rangers. For them to retool around Sid, and win back to back in 16 and 17 is a ride I will never, ever forget. Beating the Flyers, Rangers, and Caps (twice) en route was so fucking sweet. They honestly could've made noise last year if the Pens weren't on a third string goalie and if Crosby didn't get hurt. That whole series shifted when he got hurt. Too bad. The cup window is likely closed for real at this point, but three cups and two gold medals is fucking solid. Been blessed to watch like 90% of his career games. Going to be sad when he retires.

@@ryanstaunton421 Status quo takes don't impress anyone, nor are they even usually correct. But I don't really think putting modern players ahead of older players is all that hot of a take. If you want to take different eras out of the equation, Joe Malone is probably the greatest scorer of all time. 143 goals in 126 games played. No one has ever dominated like that. But everyone knows he's not the greatest. But Maurice Richard or Gretz are? Come on...

what i find most amazing about Crosby was the incredible hype he had before coming into the league. The penguins openly said they will be drafting sidney crosby. the goalie that let in his first pre-season goal said he was going to sell the puck on ebay. the hype was insane and this kid lived up to all that hype and even surpassed it by winning 3 stanley cups and was the best player in the league for a number of years.

Orr, Gretzky, Mario, Howe, Messier. Sid is top 10 for sure, top 5 is up for debate. There’s still Jaromir, and then you have a guy like Dionne who had no help around him, and put up points regardless. Sid didn’t play in the dead puck era (1997-2004). If people in these comments are going to bring up todays soft play, the 90’s were not soft at all. “If” Sid was healthy he would’ve done this or done that, you can use “Ifs” for all the other players then. If Marcel Dionne would’ve been drafted by the Canadiens, if Jaromir played without the amount of hooking he had to deal with, if Mario didn’t have cancer. All of these players would’ve had more points. Imagine Bobby Orr and Paul Coffey in todays game? No two line pass rules?
@michaelshields63262 жыл бұрын
