Let's be real here: Mora didn't say anything that's not true in that press conference. Manning threw 23 INTs that year, he literally threw himself under the bus.

Throwing your young QB under the bus like that to the media is a pretty crummy thing to do as a coach though… nonetheless it resulted in all time classic sports rant/meme. Lol So all’s well that ends well.

@@Austin.KilgoreAnd what really hurt the Colts in 2001 is that Edgerrin James tore his ACL after just six games and would miss the rest of the season. At that time, James was arguably the second best running back in the NFL after Marshall Faulk, he was just a complete weapon who could do it all. All of a sudden you lose all the production that he provided, so the Colts organization turns to Peyton and basically says “it’s all on your shoulders now, go pick up the slack and win us games”. 2008 Peyton Manning could have handled it no problem but in 2001 not so much, he was a great quarterback during that era no question, but he wasn’t quite ready to handle that kind of pressure, hence why he turned the ball over so many times, he felt like he had to force things in order to make plays happen

Jim Mora’s “Playoffs!” Rant is one of the best postgame press conferences of all time
@scsmith4604

There are 3 postgame press conferences that I love for the NFL. This one. One was with Herman Edwards where he goes off about playing the game to win and then there was one with Bill Parcells where he said he did not want to talk about a specific play and then a reporter asked a follow-up question about the play. Then Parcells exploded. It was great.

Jim didn't get into coaching until his late 20's, he didn't get his first shot at an NFL head coaching job until he was almost 50 years old. He worked for 22 years as an assistant, you can't say he wasn't dedicated.

Hey great job! Mora might be the best coach to never win a playoff game. He turned the Saints into winners if you can believe that. Looking at those clips of Peyton he looked like he needed to get himself together…his feet were all over the place and who knows what he was reading on those picks.

That's a VERY good take, on Jim Mora's rant, and his tenure as head coach at Indy! These days, having the courage of your convictions and taking a stand, seems to be 'out of style'. So looking back at Jim Mora, we can see how character does count, and that standing for your convictions, even if they get you canned, often can lead to good outcomes in the grand scheme. Doing the right thing doesn't always come with a reward you can pocket... but it sure makes it a lot easier to look at oneself in the mirror later down the line.

Mora was not wrong by saying Manning wasnt playing well but its not good to blast your QB publicly, especially if Manning owned the poor performance, especially after the loss of James when the runningbacks were extremely important. Football is a team game, and its not like Mora's defenses with the Colts were top 5.

I love when coaches or players go off script during press conferences. It's an emotional game....by all means, show some emotion. My only real issue with Mora's rant is he didn't take any responsibility for the issues.

Jim Mora was a great NFL head coach, however because he never won a playoff game he'll never be in the class of Don Shula, Bill Walsh, Chuck Noll, or Bill Bellicheck. In fact he'll never even be in the class of Bud Grant or Marv Levy both of whom went 0-4 in Superbowls.

@@beam5655 That doesn't negate the fact that Peyton was a hypocrite with that statement. You can't say you have thick skin and then turn around and cry that your coach called you out for crappy play. Someone with thick skin would say, "YEA, I played like crap. Need to do better!" If Mora had called him names that's a different story. If you're a man, own up to your part.
