Glory to God, thank you for sharing such a deeply enlightening lecture by Fr. Panayiotis. After becoming an Orthodox Christian my understanding of Christian art history has grown and it’s especially intriguing to see how the West continued to diverge from contemplative iconography to what would later result in a reactionary backlash with Protestantism.

Thank you Rev Father Panayiotis! How wonderfully you explain the use of Icons and their varied meanings in our lives as Orthodox Christians; I remember as a teenager visiting Ravenna and seeing "in person" (his mosaic glorious in St Appolinairus church) St Justinian lovingly looking down ("regarding") on me in "introducing himself". Today I have a copy of that mosaic in our Chapel here, and with joy we sing "Only Begotten Son" and rejoice in his holiness! And having been healed (heart condition) by the Holy Panagia (Sitka Alaska icon) how I rejoice in living "in her presence" also as she brings us into His Holy Throne room of grace in Divine Services! So much to be thankful to God for, in particular His Glorifying Theosis of the humanity which we bear as we cooperate with His Holy Spirit in all He requests of us we pray!

Thank you so much for this beautiful and informative presentation, from those of us who will never get to see these artifacts. Thank you even more though for what you said about Christ. Many people today call themselves Christians and yet believe Christ was not God, or that he was not fully human, that he didn't actually die, or that he died but was never resurrected. Now, people are free to believe whatever they wish, but once you change one of these essential truths you have a different religion entirely; it is not Christianity.

Fr. Panayiotis Papageorgiou, Ph.D. is knowledgeable and has an amusing presentation style. The film producers have done a good job alternating between the speaker and showing the slides to great advantage, even highlighting the aspect of the images the speaker is talking of. It is a long video, but goes by quickly.

Is there a video on how and why our Icons are placed in our churches. Second how can we set up our home alters in a similar way. This would be a great help for families to teach thier children. Mine are in thier twenties and we still use our icons to teach. For our family Icons are such a comfort and yet a focus in the physical world that transcends us to the spiritual world. Thank you for always making these wonderful films.+ Continued prayer and thanksgiving on your mission to witness and Bless us all through your work. +

Hi Diana. In the future we may go deeper into the history of Holy Icons. This lecture is merely an introduction. It's main purpose was to show what happened in the West and how they lost Iconography to the Renaissance art. As for the home altar, we encourage people to place their Icons in a similar way as we have them on the Iconostasi of the church and face east as they pray if possible (depending on the orientation of the home). The most important thing is to pray regularly and for the home to be the extension of the Church. To create a "small church at home" as St. Chrysostom teaches.

The sistine chapel and its depiction of Jesus is shocking when compared to Orthodox. Looks satanic to me. Naked, no beard, he could just as well be Lucifer. The Vatican feels like an evil place to me compared to Greek Orthodox places of worship. Thank you so much for this video. Fr. Panayiotis made such a brilliant lecture. I love the Greek Orthodox icons and now appreciate them even more. I'm an oil painter living in Aegina, Greece and I'm inspired by the careful attention to detail in every aspect of the icons. Everything was done with care, God's spirit and the renaissance just carelessly did away with all of that. I'm happy to have more of an understanding of this now. I sure wish I could be a part of Fr. Panayiotis' church. He seems like a Saint!

Thank you for the logical organization and presentation of this extraordinary introduction. I hope you follow this offering with a deeper dive. There are so many nuances that only become apparent upon careful study of an icon. Basic question, what is the significance of the footstools? Is it part of an understanding of ruling, ie "I will make of make your enemies a footstool?"

Whenever you see Eve or Saint Mary of Egypt, they are usually not covered. They are the only two exceptions in depicting women. But they are generally not shown in a way that is in any sense provocative.

Minute 49:33 Theotokos with Christ enthroned (still have to watch to the end of the video, thank you very interesting:)... but for now, Isis the Egyptian Goddess, is also depicted enthroned with her child Horus, the relation or similarities are known. That throne in some ocassions she also wears as a crown, her divine attribute. If we look closely that throne, her crown, also has that foot pedestal you mention once and again, even Jesus has one. The meaning or teaching is that in prayer or meditation, in Holy ground, both foot should be parallel facing foward and flat on the floor. Isis stool or throne also has a very low back so to maintain a straight posture.

Regarding statues, could you provide any sources that they were forbidden by the Church? I’ve seen people say they the pre-schism West used them basically in the same way that the East used icons.
@Trisagionfilms
@Trisagionfilms 4 жыл бұрын
According to the Byzantine historian Steven Runciman, in his book "Byzantine Style and Civilization", statues existed sparsely in both East and West but were not displayed prominently. They would be usually placed in coves in the walls and were not seen as 3-D statues. Of course, the Iconoclastic Controversy with its fierce opposition to any kind of image reduced the use of statues even further. As the church came out of that, statues are not seen any more much in either East or West. Even though, there may have not been any official prohibition after the Iconoclastic controversy, the Church was more concerned about their use lest they be confused with the pagan statues and their worship.

The whole world should go back to the earliest Christian values and see how far much was impressive and of great estimates that lift up the spirit of human being and have made him of a haighst value into the eyes of God. Regretfully, most of the world receded into what so - called now the advanced techs. Neglecting, the real virtues of Christianity on the earth. Leaving those behind and turning their back to all these factors of real life is a catastrophe. The only one who will regret for the loss of himself is the manhood.

For example the Buddha was from Nepal but look at the Japanese or Chinese art where he looks distinctly East Asian. @Nana This is an Orthodox Church and an Orthodox lecture! Catholics do w/e they want in their curches. It means nothing to the Orthodox. Catholics do half-naked men circus representation in their temples attended by the pope. Orthodox don't. So there's all the apostates and heretics and then there's the Orthodox Church. The Theotokos is not an indian. That's why there are strict canons in iconography. So not anyone who feels creative goes crazy in blasphemy. --- And what you linked here is not a church, it's a circus. Well lit one if I may say.
