"Thirsting for God: In a Land of Shallow Wells" by Matthew Gallatin does a really good job of breaking down the differences bet Orthodoxy and Protestantism. He uses both scripture and decisions by the various synods and councils. The author is a convert from Protestantism to Orthodoxy.

The difference between Eastern Orthodoxy and western expressions of Christianity is that Orthodoxy expresses a Way of life: an actual transformation of your self into being closer to Jesus. We call this “theosis” and it is part of the process of sanctification by the Holy Spirit. The whole practice of Orthodoxy is to get you “into it”- by prayer discipline, controlling your passions (impulses), and community experience of the Holy Mysteries. All to get you out of your head and on the path to God.

Sounds similar to what i as a western Christian do too. My faith is my whole life , i give time everyday to reflect on the perfect Christ and the Gospel. Instead of squabble we should come together as fellow Christians as we all believe that Christ was broken on the cross for our sins.

@@Hail_Full_of_Grace I agree. I think that Protestants have a lot to learn from Orthodox, but I also think the Orthodox has something to learn from Protestants, and the divisions along "party lines" is opposite of the inclusionary unity expressed so clearly by Jesus and the apostles.

I was raised in a Pentecostal church and was never able to find answers for a lot of questions that I had. After 2 close friends introduced me to the orthodox church I can say that I am now an Inquirer and hope to be accepted into the church soon. And thank God, that I am learning from my Orthodox brothers and sisters. Having said that however, when it comes to mission and evangelism, other two branch also has much to learn from the protestants.

These videos are a part of this work and there are thousands of other out reach programs throughout the church worldwide. One is our OCMC. If your referring to our inqiring and challenging individuals asking "are you saved? " we do but in a much different and sacred way. We also do not prostelize. So I hope this clarified missionary work. The Orthodox church was created on the entire foundation of missionary work. My suggestion, come and see. Contact a local priest in your area and go to the church and Father will be able to answer all your questions. You do not need to attend a liturgy this can be done any day. Although, the liturgy is quite beautuful, but preparation may inhance your understanding and experience. God bless you on your journey.

It says quite a bit that the Orthodox had no such reformation. The West lost its way long ago and the results are plain for all to see today. I foresee many Protestants converting to Orthodoxy in the future. Frankly it just hasn’t been known to us, and I think all many of us have ever wanted is to worship the way the Lord Jesus Christ and His apostles laid out for us, yet we’ve known the papacy is not that way. I come from a Protestant tradition an I’ve been away from church from many years. I’ve been in touch with orthodox literature for a while and I found why I’ve always felt something was quite not right about my notions on salvation and all the main topics of my faith. Unfortunately where I live there is not an orthodox community. As I live in Japan the nearest Orthodox Church is in Tokyo but I’m willing to travel weekly to find my way through as soon as possible. I finally have found the real Christ’s church.

Current Latin Catholic who is being heavily pulled to Orthodoxy for quite some tie now. I can no longer accept that the Latin Church is the true Church. Way too much corruption and confusion. My brother is reading a book I bought, the book that mysteriously was pulled from the shelves not to be sold, so they are scared about something in the book, but if I heard my brother right, there is a possibility that the slavs may have been late coming down in the 9 Century ad but they may connect to us. IT is not BCE or ACE. this is made up crap I argued with professors when I was going to college and I said I can't get used to this and as long as I'm in college I will not accept any changes!!!!! @@petervandolah5322 I cannot get past the kissing of paintings. I have been a painter for almost 20 years, but a Christian for only 2. When I converted I was hyper-focused on all the warnings in the Old Testament about graven images, and I do not see how the Orthodox justify such behavior. I also despise the complete lack of visual worship in my Protestant church so it's not like I'm claiming they do it any better - but is it not just dead pigments on a dead canvas?

If nobody reformed the western world would be stuck in a world where the priesthood sells it's supposed powers and believed in the infallibility of a single human. The Roman catholic church at the time seems to me to have been as far away from christianity as it is possible to get without simply giving up on the whole idea altogether. The reform needed to happen, the question is whether it took the best direction, or could have done better.

They almost did !! Martin Luther was actually in dialogue with the Greek Orthodox when he left Roman Catholicism. He even stated, “ The Truth lies with the Greeks”. As he first started writing them , he thought that his new found beliefs were gonna directly line up with the orthodox viewpoints. He even stated this and seemed excited about being in contact with them. But unfortunately, he quickly found out he was mistaken. In the next few letters, he tried to justify his beliefs and also somewhat wanted to come to a compromise. But the Orthodox bishops basically deemed him also a heretic by this point and told him not to write them again..and also quit responding to him. Otherwise, I think possibly he maybe could have. But since he had a haughty attitude and argued some of his points, he upset the Greeks and they cut him off. Oh well...Is what it is.

Dear Nickolas Barbin, If you listen to the whole lecture you will find out that even though Luther indeed said, “The Truth lies with the Greeks”, he never himself attempted to contact the Orthodox. It was Philip Melanchthon who did, after Luther's death. Luther was wrapt up in himself and his new ideologies. And the Lutherans after him who repeated the effort 15 years after Melanchthon's death were unable to understand the objections of the Orthodox to the changes introduced by the Lutherans. Aballa Akway “A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF CHRISTIAN HISTORY Generally speaking, most Christians were all members of a single Church for roughly a thousand years from the time of Christ’s Resurrection from the dead until about the middle of the eleventh century. There were schisms here and there even from the time of the apostles, but with a few notable exceptions, there were no truly major competing Christian churches. Most Christians belonged to a single Church that traced its roots directly to, and whose leaders stood in a direct historical succession from, the apostles. They were focused in five great spiritual centers: Rome, Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch, and Jerusalem. These five great churches together were one Christian Church, and they shared the same dogma, the same beliefs, and the same spiritual life, without any changes in substance since the time of the apostles. These churches were led by bishops. Their worship life was liturgical, involving detailed, meaningful, and highly symbolic rituals whose sacraments were understood as truly conveying God’s grace to the believer. It was during this period, specifically in the late fourth century, that the canon of the New Testament came to be finalized, first written down by the bishop of Alexandria in the year 367, St. Athanasius the Great. That list from 367 is the earliest list of the twenty-seven books of the New Testament as we now know it. The Christian Church functioned for more than three hundred years without the ability to ask itself, “What does the Bible say?” In the eleventh century, issues that had been simmering for some time on the back burner between the churches of Rome and Constantinople came to a boil. Rome broke communion with Constantinople (meaning they could not receive the Eucharist together nor worship together), and then Constantinople returned the favor and broke communion with Rome. The primary matter at issue was whether Rome’s bishop, the Pope, should be considered the ruler of all bishops, rather than simply the most senior. Rome said yes, but Constantinople said no. Eventually, Alexandria, Antioch, and Jerusalem all clearly said no, too, so communion was also broken between them and Rome. From that time on, we can clearly see the independent formation of the Roman Catholic Church, with the Pope as its absolute head. The other churches that remained together and continued in the old way of seeing all bishops as essentially equal are now known as the Orthodox Church, sometimes also called the “Eastern Orthodox” or “Greek Orthodox” Church (“Greek Church” by itself was common in English writing prior to the twentieth century). Later, in the sixteenth century, an Augustinian monk in Germany by the name of Martin Luther famously protested against various abuses of the Roman Catholic Church, most especially the sale of indulgences to get believers out of purgatory, but also against the absolute authority of the Pope and some other matters. His publication in 1517 of ninety-five theses against the claims of the Pope was the moment that began the Protestant Reformation, a major break-up of Christianity in Western Europe. Within a generation, there came to be multiple Protestant factions, all at odds with each other, but all at least united in their conviction that Rome was wrong. Protestantism has continued to fracture in the five centuries since, and unlike the original Protestants, most now do not have bishops and do not worship liturgically with sacraments. Some estimates of the number of Protestant Christian denominations are as high as thirty thousand, though that number includes many single, independent congregations. Among them, you can find a bewildering array of different beliefs. And most of them claim to be “just going by the Bible.” Thus, over the past thousand years, there were two great fractures in Christian history, and Christians are now divided roughly into three general groupings: Orthodox Christianity, Roman Catholicism, and the many denominations of Protestantism.”-Fr. As a 20 year Protestant minister and writer (AKA: Ex-Heretic)---- and 2500+ books later... I studied my way out of Protestantism and into Orthodoxy. I'm in the beginning stages of the conversion process. To be deep in history is to cease to be Protestant. That is, so long as you have the integrity and ability to forsake falsehoods that you've ignorantly accepted as truth. I didn't intend to be swayed by Orthodoxy, it just happened. This was a ten year process (that's still underway). You'd be hard pressed to objectively study church history and NOT end up converting to Orthodoxy. The only reason many don't, is because they fear the backlash (from family and fellow protestants). Either that, or they're too prideful to admit they've been wrong for so many years. As one who loves the truth, I have no problem admitting that I'm wrong. I like being right, therefore; I'm quick to admit when I'm wrong. So many people pridefully steep themselves in a falsehood that they flippantly refer to as "truth". At that point on, it becomes self deception. When your self-deluded preference (of how you prefer the truth to be) is fully embraced as truth...the actual truth will appear to be a self-deluded deception. To save face, many people will consciously remain in falsehood. This causes them to run headlong into a vast array of unconscious heresy. This causes me to quake...to work out my own salvation with fear and trembling. I'm humbled to the core of my being that the Lord has saved me from Protestantism. I see all of the little individual facets of Protestantism as being the daughters of the harlot (that Revelation speaks of). So many protestants feel superior because they're not Catholic. Little do they know they are mere portable expressions of their mother, the harlot. All of their pastors are mini-wannabe popes. I have such sympathy for those who have yet to come out of her. Many don't even know there's a third option (orthodoxy). Orthodoxy is the best kept secret in the west. In these last days, I hope that changes. I do believe I'm in a time of testing and temptation. Selling out to Protestantism can provide me A LOT of security (in my finances, ego and personal relevance). And, when money is involved, it's amazing what the human mind can pass off as "truth". The very thing I once accepted as truth, is now what I consider to be deception (according to the light that's been given unto me). It's this deception that has now become a temptation to return to...a deception that has the name of God upon it. It feels like I'm engaged in spiritual mind games (from the enemy). When all you once believed is required to be placed upon the altar of sacrifice: it'll then become apparent as to who it is you really serve. Thus my present attack from the forces of darkness. In all honesty (as painful as it is): I feel insurmountably blessed to have the Lord providing me such crystal clear distinctions within the lines of the sand that is my life. Now, it's up to me to decide what I'll do with the poignantly-distinctive conviction that's been etched and burnt upon my soul. Even though I know I have a free-will choice: there is only one choice I can make. I serve the Lord Jesus Christ from the depths of my conscience. Christ said to take up your cross and follow Him. But I never really thought that the practical application of fulfilling that decree would lead to an all-out forsaking of what I once clung to (so as to forsake the world). Yes, the forsaking of what isn't of God is the very thing that I once clung to AS God. This is what I meant by "spiritual mind games". It's painful-----------but it's glorious and beautiful just the same. Praise the Lord for the ever-increasing light that progressively reveals more and more of what's hidden in the dark. I thought that all that was hidden was already revealed. Not so! A Divine revealing/stripping is underway...and how humbling it is. I want to thank you for this video. It has been instrumental in the process described in the above paragraphs. I still struggle with a few of the tenants of Orthodoxy (mainly icons) but I'm willing to submit my understanding and interpretation to the authority of the church. I mean, what's the alternative? Yet more anarchy from the disaster that is Sola Scriptura? No. I just can't. I'm burnt out. I'll sacrifice my interpretation (that I used to mistake as "infallible-scripture") upon the altar of 2000 years worth of tradition before I'll EVER return to the failed experiment of Protestantism. With that said, if it wasn't for Justin Martyr's blatant rejection of images/icons, I wouldn't struggle with the late addition of iconography. If it was accepted at a much earlier date, I wouldn't have ANY trouble accepting it. If anyone can offer some instruction, I'm more than open.

Where in Justin martyr is there a rejection of Icons? He might have been referring to pagan idols... Many theological writings have been created to explain why icons are so important. Saint John of Damascus is one of the best examples of a master theologian who was a champion of explaining the importance of iconography and the place of icons in our church. Lets have a dialogue about this :)

The first one to paint Holy Icons was Saint Luke the apostle and he did that with the blessing of the Most Holy Theotokos. His icons still exist in the monasteries of Holy Mount Athos. Despite that there are many miracles associated with Icons, not to mention streaming of Myrrh and so many healings after praying to the Saint depicted on the Holy Icon. On the other hand we can analize the behavior of original iconoclasts. It was clearly demonic and not christian, destroying Icons in rage and getting bewildered with anyone thinking otherwise. The Saints when being right, they spoke the truth bravely with heavenly zeal but never with rage, let alone that they killed someone. But the iconoclasts what did they do? They did completely otherwise. Were they right? Clearly not

Thank you for this teaching. Fascinating historical facts that I have never heard before. Regarding icons, as a former evangelical protestant, icons were considered "idols" and kissing them was considered "idol worship". Learning about Orthodoxy, a 'light' came on in my heart and it suddenly occurred that I kiss my deceased mother's photo and ask her to pray for me/help me. I don't worship her, she is not my idol, I respect and love her...and know she is with God and will help me. Being surrounded by staunch protestants, I cannot have icons in my home; but secretly I keep a book ("Wounded by Love") about Saint Prophyrios on my bed side table. That book has a photo of dear Saint Prophyrios. Every morning and night I kiss his photo and thank him for praying for me. @@Trisagionfilms

You do realize that there was no New Testament until about 400 years after Christ right? Technically you could say 700 years. The whole idea came about because of Marcion and his heresy. Biblical Christianity is an oxymoron as all Christians accept the bible. There was never faith alone and definitely not Scripture alone. The Church was founded on Christ as the cornerstone with the Apostles and Tanakh (Torah, Prophets, and Wisdom books of the Septuagint) as the foundation. The New Testament came a few hundred years latter. The Church read certain Epistles and writings of the Apostles and the early Martyrs but no Canon existed. The Church begat the Bible, not the Bible the Church.

More incorrect nonsense by you. The Orthodox Church never said the Western Saints were heretical. Never. St. Augustine, St. Patrick, St. Hilda, St. Leo the Great are all honored in the East. Western theology took Augustine's view over St. Gregory, St. Basil, and St. John Chrysostom. That is all. You have a huge deficit in your theological education. Aquinas is not a Saint and neither is Anselm of Canterbury. Neither is Francis (though many honor him in the East) because Rome was no longer part of the Church after 1054 A.D. and Aquinas and Anselm had heretical views.

Why? Most of what he says is either nonsense, or bizarre oversimplification. For instance, the speaker states that the Orthodox rejected the rationalism of Aristotle (and Aquinas by extension), but they were still rational? That is complete nonsense. Reason is a gift of God and evidence of the eternal soul. All Aquinas offered to do was demonstrate that revelation was not and could not be unreasonable. “Orthodox mysticism” is fine insofar as it goes, and is welcomed under the umbrella of Roman Catholicism. But it does not offer the fullness of the faith. Catholicism often fails to utilize that fullness, but they are still on offer.

The great Cambridge historian Herbert Butterfield, himself a Christian, taught that Providence has played a far greater role in history than we realise. I am a reformed evangelical who is increasingly drawn towards Eastern Orthodoxy. But what I am finding also is that the Orthodox, like the Jews, were not particularly interested in evangelism. The spread of Christianity to Latin America, East Asia and Africa had nothing to do with the Orthodox. So God knows why he allowed the Reformation, which, by the way, forced the Catholic Church to change in certain fundamental ways. What we need today is a new ecumenical spirit that will bring the body of Christ back together, as it was in the days of the Apostolic Fathers. Shalom!

The only reason they never spread the word to those regions is that the efforts to do so were generally colonial in nature. The Russian expansion into Siberia did see the spread of Orthodoxy to the native Siberians (to a certain extent). The Orthodox religion also spread to India and other Asian places. New World colonialism is really the only reason Western Christianity learned how to do missionary work effectively.

That was a great talk, and if what all you said was true, I’d convert tomorrow. I’m catholic, and believe in the primacy of the seat of Peter, and the filioque, and purgatory, so they are great obstacles… anyway, I’ll continue with my research. I actually believed we were incredibly close to our orthodox brethren, I didn’t realise you disliked us so much 😢. My sister was married to a Greek Orthodox man ( she is now deceased) and I know she considered converting, but she held her Roman catholic faith till she died, kids were all baptised orthodox, and honestly, I just thought it was the filioque and the Pope that were the cause of division, I’ve never heard about any of those other things, and even if they were true, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t know we have had (have) troublesome popes … We have amazing saints, miracles and Jesus and Marian Apparitions, so I know God is with us too.

What most people don't realise about the reformation is that it was not just one man called Luther that started it but was a movement that began hundreds of years before he even came on the scene and is still moveing toward what is considered Orthodox or Early Church teaching. I dont think that we will be home when we convert to Eastern Orthodoxy but will still be in battle against false teaching within the Church because that is what it does best. There will always be false doctrine within and without because there has always bin,being Orthodox does not change this. The teaching of the Church being able to keep the doctrine of the Church without error is a false teaching as well.

I as well an from growing up in a cult to evangelicals/non denominational and find all lacking and some doctrine that were false. Panayiotis Papageorgiou on the relationship between orthodoxy and protestantism. i would be interested in the response to this paper, especially the statement about charlemagne being the one who made the roman catholic church, the roman catholic church. would a church historian in the west agree with that point. i suspect that there would be some dispute on this. that said, this does give an insight into the theological views within orthodoxy, and certainly that is a great service, for i for one, have to read more about my brothers and sisters in the east, and understand the beauty of orthodox theology. i have been to a russian orthodox church three times, each time on easter, and everytime, been blessed.

By the grace of God I have been a bible believer for last 50 plus years, It's His grace and my faith that saves me, and my faith has and will produce goods works in my life. -- I'm US born and raised Roman Catholic, but I left that church in my teenage years. Since then, I have been to many kinds of Protestant churches and even a Latin Mass Roman Catholic church. It seems to me they all have their their differences in their theologies. I've basically been Arminian for almost 30 years of my Christian life. Starting towards the end of 2019 I started studying scripture more intently, mostly to refute Augustinian Calvaniatic philosophy. I've slowly come to realize that saints are chosen "In Him" before the foundation of the world, basically for service (to be Holy and blameless before Him) and bot chosen for salvation unilaterally nor according to Gods foreknowledge of those who would trust in Christ. I've recently been engulfed in studying scripture and watching videos in trying to get out of the brainwashed idea I've always had of the western idea of original sin and total depravity. I'm still struggling with this concept, it seems as though I'm in an extreme minority. I've just recently found videos like this and may not agree with everything, but I'm learning. Does anyone have any other recommended videos / books? From an almost totally former Western Prostestant Arminian lol Thanks

I’ve heard that using unleavened bread in the Western Eucharist actually began as a tragic sort of accident and the “Passover” rationale was only later retroactively applied to it to further ‘justify’ the change. What seems to have actually happened was that several Gaulish bishops became very concerned with finding better ways to prevent the Sacred Host from being so crumbly, and thus eliminate the risk of the slightest particle falling down. Spoons were not used in the west because many dioceses were initially too poor to acquire one, just barely having enough to afford a simple chalice. In some communities, the only gold they ever saw was the Cup of Christ. They increasingly did without the Spoon until it became a traditional Western norm to this day. However, that means the Flesh can’t be soaked in His Blood to prevent crumbling, as the Eastern Rites do, and scooping It up with his fingers is unseemly and risks sacred Blood spatter. So, two methods have been used: Dip the dry Flesh in the Blood one Piece at a time, having shaped them carefully beforehand where every crumb can be accounted for, and administer the still half dry Flesh that way: OR Feed Them Both in separate mouthfuls. Sadly, that latter became dominant and had higher risk of a blasphemous mess. So, to make the Sacred Host less crumbly, someone, probably a priest with experience baking ordinary bread, got the idea to add LESS yeast to the Sacramental bread. Not none, not at first, over a few generations, they added less and less, all to prevent crumbling. The “Passover Meal” rationalization was added later so they wouldn’t have to admit they’d made a mistake. It’s easier to fool people, including yourself, then it is to make them admit they’ve been fools.

The Greek word (the New Testament was written in Greek) used would be written as "artos" in English. Artos is common bread, leavened bread. In Greek there is another (perhaps 2 other words) word for unleavened bread. So there is no question that the Last Supper was instituted with common, leavened bread. As to what you say here, it seems far-fetched. More likely is how Fr. Panayiotis said it. The Latins had no knowledge of Greek (or not enough; also no understanding of the Jewish practices at that time) and they made a false assumption as to what was done in Jesus' time. That is far more likely than avoiding crumbs. Besides, there can be crumbs with unleavened bread, too.

Schaeffer's son converted to Orthodoxy - disillusioned with empty religiosity that experienced at home. I currently lean evangelical, but with a desire to accept elements of mysticism and synthesize the traditions.

Were you referring to Francis Schaffer's son? If so, that would be amazing. When I was eyeballs deep in Protestantism, Francis Schaefer was one of the main teachers in my rolodex of preachers. He had an excellent, "big picture" grasp on church history, the enlightmeht and the Renaissance. His Calvinism was nauseating, but he was truly an intellectually gifted man.

If you can get your hands on a little booklet by Chrystomos H. Stratman, written in the 1920s please do so. It is out of print but I have found it on out of the way sites on the Internet. He explains about the branch theory in Protestantism, and how many sects claim a connection to the true church, but are in error. It converted me on the spot from Protestantism. Anything written by this man is very easy to read and he lays it all out for those searching for the truth of Orthodoxy.

I was recently baptized and joined the Orthodox Church, and doing so has ruffled some feathers in my family. I have a 7th Day Adventist relative who believes I’m in error and in the wrong church; he believes that I’m following the white man’s religion and that I should adhere to the Hebrew Israelite teachings. Due to my own research, I don’t think the Hebrew Israelites correct because none of them can account for Church history, particularly the Ecumenical Councils and the authority figures responsible for establishing the canon of Scripture.

With one significant difference - Orthodoxy kicked out the heretical Rome while remaining the true Church. Orthodox East has never been an offspring of Roman church, never endorsing the theologies of Ambrose, Augustine of Hippo, etc. Protestants of 16th century are on the contrary, whether they like it or not, children of Roman church who went into rebellion... sadly never coming back to the origins of the true Faith as preserved in EOC.
