I’ve watched the film 5 times now. I’ve never missed someone who I’ve never known, and I think humanity has a big hole in it with Marc Andre not here. There’s no contemporary climbers that I’ve really found any connection with - Ueli Steck (RIP) sprinting up mountains, Nims conducting military operations to conquer peaks, to name two - but there was something about Marc Andre’s approach which rang real hard with me. He had such a deep appreciation and love for the mountains that was so pure and true. He wasn’t motivated by fame or glory or his ego. He did it for the experience of being, for the wonder and amazement, and for communion and oneness with the mountains. It’s fucking beautiful man, and I’m tearing up just thinking about it. What a guy.

I’m 50. My best friend Andrew died when I was 23 he was 21. He was a truly good guy. Didn’t give a fk about money & advancement. Did a degree in economics then instead of doing his PhD he dropped out to be a manager of a whiskey shop. Because he loved old whiskeys & meeting new people. He also happened to be a world class guitarist although he passed it off like it was nothing special. I had forgotten his Aura but this film reminded me. There are some souls that come into this place that just aren’t made for this world. But we don’t mock them or ridicule them. Instead they remind us of what we should be. They just refuse to take part in the nonsense..

Nope, his legend won't live forever. In 50 years no one will know who he was. People barely remember who climbed the Everest first, which is something way more mainstream that the climbs this guy did. Alpinists did crazier things 100 years ago because they didn't have the advanced gear this guy had...and yet how many legendary climbers from the '20s do you know without googling them?

What an un-compromised existence. He found things he loved to do, and did them to an unimaginable level. In this world filled with mediocre people, doing mediocre things, and trying to become famous for it; here you have a truly awe Inspiring individual, doing absolutely incredible things, just for the love of it. I wish I could have known this kid for one day, it looks like the good vibes he radiated have touched people from around the world. Watching this movie has truly inspired me. I’m glad his story has been told for so many in the world to enjoy. We all die some day, might as well spend at least some of your time on this earth, actually living.

The documentary filled me with inspiration, love, awe, exhilaration, I squealed at my partner with excitement to see what Marc-Andre was achieving. And then it broke my heart. I'm from a small city in Illinois. Ive been watching the Netflix title "The Alpinist". I now reside in NM, and I trail walk with my teenage son, small foothills at the very most vertical. It gets harrowing for me on these molehills. I watched this guy and got a lump in my throat and teary-eyed at the rawness of his commitment and just the joy that his solo climbs brought to him. I'm not an avid outdoorsman by any stretch of the imagination, but man......the skill and perfection of what he accomplished, in the shadows of the limelight. I'm really at a loss for words for what I saw. The humbleness, like a walk in the park attitude. This guy was special. R.I.P. Marc.

The Last Mountain gave me a sense of dread watching because Tom's story felt pretty tragic in that he seemed like a tormented soul and to some extent angry underneath and burdened. 10 minutes into the Netflix documentary I knew Marc wouldn't live to see 30. The only real surprise was that he didn't die while free-soloing. He DID die because he was constantly attempting alpine climbs in tiny weather windows. But at least he lived a full life and died doing what he loved most.

Because of Alex Honnold, I gave this doc a chance too. I did not know he died. It was a shock. But at the outset of the doc, I had wondered if all this filming and notoriety good for him, and for climbers in general. As down to earth as he is, everyone has an ego. Do you push yourself a little more when you know people are following your story? Do you push a little more cause you're life is now in a spotlight? I worried about these things not knowing he actually died till the end of the doc. That was sad.

Marc-Andre Leclerc didn't make any mistake in his art any more than an artist who is outside working on a painting when an airliner crashes into the artist, explodes and obliterates him/her. Sometimes one is just in the wrong place at the wrong time, fate intervenes and there is nothing you can do about it. RIP Ryan Johnson and Marc-Andre Leclerc for following your dreams and aspirations. You're both an inspiration for us mere mortals. Thank you.

He had to go through all the climbing, what a amazing person. NOBODY can EVER be like him in the future. He’s crazy, but crazy awesome. I cant believe he was so relaxed while climbing. He even climbed on one of the mountains I most fear. RIP Marc.

Yep he was unique as a human being, as an Alpinist I would say threre are at least 30 guys on that level. Sadly a lot of them die young like David Lama and Auer who were at the most elite levels of Alpinism there is. A lot of these mountaineers have great characters

@@listrahtes There isn't 30 guys on Marc's level, not even close. If there was we'd have 30 movies just like the alpinist. There isn't even one at the moment I'd say in terms of his full package. He made the jaws of some of the boldest soloists in the world drop with his audacity. If you make Alex Honnold of all people marvel at your fearlessness at some of the stuff you're doing you're not exactly just one out of a few dozens. Are there climbers that are as technical as him? Sure. Are there any that are both as technical, well rounded, fearless and who can put it all together like he did at that age on such difficult terrain? And not just in theory who is actually doing it right now? I can't think of any.

Decided I want to climb the route he did on Mendenhall Towers. I've never climbed before but seemed so easy in the alpinist. Will be climbing in his honour.

@@ThePhilosophicalOne Just got back a week ago. Thank you for your prayers Sandeep. I completed it pretty easily. Actually about halfway up I switched to flip flops and changed into shorts and a t-shirt. Hoping to find something more challenging in the future.

Dear Legend, thank you for teaching the world important lessons: 1. how to be bright light in the deep dark, when you climbed first solo winter ascent the East Pillar - Torre Egger, Patagonia, 2. how you don't need anything, just yourself as a small person in a big world 3. live and eat as its your last day on Earth 4. you need freedom every day in your life 5. there is no better feeling than feeling small in a big world. 6. HUMILITY You have become a mountain legend. You did came to travel this Earth fast as light do. ALPINIST knew why it is better to climb alone.

I teared up watching the Alpinist. I can't say why.. not like I'm anything like him. I don't even believe in good people or pure souls. Those are just labels. But it was almost like watching a pet die (not to condescend) because the dude was pure Id. Like a joyful impulse put on this shitty world to remind us of how weak we are worrying about buying that new car...the dude lived the way philosophers only write about...

Watching the alpinist I have never been more uncomfortable in my life Watching a documentary. The footage of him hacking at hanging ice and hanging by an ice pick is heart thumping just to watch . Some people must have a part of their brain disabled to be able to do these things . I can't even climb a ladder without shaking how this is possible is a mystery? They should do cat scans or something on people like this very interesting.

You have to be a little bit fucked. They're not perceiving the risk appropriately, they block it out. It allows them to accomplish crazy feats, it also gets them killed. His death was inevitable. The kid had a screw loose.

@bronchoped1 the worst part of free solo coming out is everyone thinking honnold is the best climber in the world. There were comments kissing his ass on the Adam ondra 9a+ onsight video. Really shows you how little people know about what they are interested in.

I have a serious question. When he is solo climbing those routes how does he get back down without ropes? Does he usually call in for a helicopter to pick him up? If not I feel like going back down would be harder
