This is the story of Rocket League season rewards and why Psyonix receives so much hate every time they release new ones. This past Rocket League season had possibly one of the worst rewards yet, and because of that, one of the worst community responses to them.

In Rocket League season 4, Psyonix released the most hated rewards of all time. The current system in which they reveal the season rewards at the end of the season, after each player has already grinded for them, is definitely not working out, and it never has. We constantly see disappointment among the community about how "horrible" the season rewards are, even when they are actually pretty good by most standards. But in this season in particular, when they are truly ugly by most standards, the response from the community was far worse than we could have imagined. Almost no one actually thinks the rewards are cool. Despite being brand new items that everyone has received, you rarely ever see them equipped in game because of how widely considered they are to be ugly.

Last season i defended the S3 decals in the steam forums and i saw a ton of players using them in S4. Also, i really like many items from the new S5 rocket pass (which is better than the last one imo) and some of the new tourney rewards. But these wheels are so ugly.. They just should rework them or give us a clean version. I think most players above gold generally dont want to use wheels that have to much stuff on the tire so they start flickering when you use them - especially on Octane where the whole wheel is visible. I think psyonix should focus more on cleaner but stylish wheels that are actually useable in game.

My reason for using them: I earned it. Even when they don’t look great I still use it, i build a whole car around my rewards. It’s MY achievement, and i want to use what I earned. I don’t use it the entire season and i switch cars around a lot anyways, but I like using what i have. It isn’t showing off, it’s appreciating my progress from my start rank of silver.

The Problem ist not the grind for the rank rewards, but the point in being at a certain rank encourages people to built an massive ego combined with Fear of losing that rank. Both this Ends up in missing self-reflection of playstyle and toxicity (which then will be answered with even more toxicity by other players)

How about community made stuff? I found a lot of great looking decals, goal explosions and more out there which are sadly only usable with bakkesmod. I would like to have a vote on 5 different things and whatever gets the most likes will be taken as the new season reward - but with the rank based design. They could even pick one topic to keep the diversity but those wheels are no more then 5 minutes to design each - and I can only imagine using them in Snow Day...

Let me be the first to say, I kinda like the wheels. They could have been better, but they could have been worse, but I can't get myself to say "I hate them". They aren't that bad. Plus, look on the bright side, if they did explosions this season, they can't do it twice and do it in season 5, so far looking to be the best season yet. And the push for UE5, makes sense why the wheels aren't highly detailed or took long.

I grind each season to get my rewards, and then i spend the rest of the season with a little bit less stress. I never use the rewards, but still. I want them. I'll feel empty without that season rewards. Plus, having each seasons rewards is a good way to track your progress because to can see how well you did each season.

After hearing the info about the banners, I'm convinced that these wheels will be semi-popular in the future. The reason I think so is because compared to previous season rewards, these stand out. Try-hards and people that like clean cars won't use them, but low ranked player and trolls definitely will.

Last season i grinded for grand champion and finaly got it. Once i saw the rewards, i HATED them. But after some thinking, on the bright side i still would get the grand champ title. Now, i did my placements and i won 7/10 and got placed in champion 2. This season i just dont feel likje playing.

I think the problem with the dragon banners was awarding them at the same time they rolled out banners in general. So everybody who was maybe hoping for something to give their car a little extra flash instead had to absorb that this whole new feature was going to be a part of the game. They weren't hoping for a new feature, they were hoping for a better version of what they already had.

The chances that strategy backfires are too high for Psyonix to even consider it: the number of players that would grind to become better and get better rewards is nowhere near the number of players that would feel like they were being discriminated for being worse. I started playing RL in the midst of se.3 (2021), so this is all new to me. I bought a se.4 pass, not really knowing what I'd be getting, or what to expect. I learned a lot, really quick. While I'm not dissatisfied with the season rewards, I'm also not excited over them. There are *multiple problems* to last season's rewards. - They announced it very late compared to other F2P seasons. Both season 2 and season 3's were announced 3 weeks before the end date. Season 4 was less than a week. - The design doesn't change between ranks. As hilarious as the old season 13 one looks, at least they look different for each rank. - The design is too similar to the ruinator from the rocket pass. - The design itself, in a vacuum, arguably looks bad. To think last season was just the time I could finally get my friend to grind some ranked...

I honestly respect this move by Psyonix. If people complain every time you put effort into making something, why bother continuing to make the effort? I've always liked the idea of ranked rewards and they're a nice way to give people something to show for their hard work, but honestly almost no one consistently uses them. For old season 5 imagine 5 groups of people. People that don't intend on using the reward and don't care what it is, people that don't intend on using the reward but want it to be something they *could* use, people that *will* use the reward but *don't* care what it is, people that *will* use the reward and *do* care what it is, and people that might use the reward (undecided). Out of all these groups, the first two will likely never use the reward unless it matches their loadout already. This would only be realistic for the dragon banner as the generic one doesn't really match anything in particular. People who want the reward as something they *could* use will be very vocal about not getting good rewards but will be the last people to actually use them, so it makes sense that the dragon banner saw more use when you think of it like this

Honestly I feel like the community has cried "wolf" way too many times now for Psyonix to actually do anything. Besides the very good example mentioned in the video, the player base has complained about EVERY little thing that Psyonix has changed about the game recently and they're probably sick of hearing it. They complained for ages about Psyonix not releasing anything new in season 3 (which was valid tbf) but as soon as they did start releasing new stuff in season 4 everyone complained about how terrible it was. I know I'm in the minority here but I actually really enjoyed playing with the outlaw and I feel like deadeye canyon is a pretty cool map. People begged Psyonix for ages to put in 2v2 tournaments, and when they finally did I saw very little gratitude from anyone online, just a bunch of people pretty much saying it was about time, and a few more immediately start begging for 1v1 tourneys. I understand that it's hard to satisfy the player base, and that they will never create anything that everyone likes (and trust me, I'm not saying that the wheels for this season are anywhere near decent), but I feel like the player base has complained about too many things that Psyonix has done, and hasn't shown enough gratitude when they have actually listened to us, for them to now acknowledge our opinions and try to change anything.

Well, its a business and i spend money on this game for skins, season passes, esports decals, special edition cars... So i expect a professional product. These wheels disappointed everyone and you can see that they were made without any passion for the game, they look like an amateur spent 20 minutes on the whole set. Its not a general rant against psyonix but against the decision to publish an unprofessional season reward. Many people (including me) are excited about this at the end of every season. So yeah.. this is very disappointing and i can understand the negative feedback.

It’s not a “tough choice for the developers” Release multiple items for rewards. Put some heart into the game. Maybe remake the entire garbage dump season 6 pass items?? Psyonix/epic games, whatever, obviously don’t give a fuck! About anything! The servers are trash, the pass items are trash, the rewards have been a joke.. Why does this happen? Because EVERYONE will still buy the season pass. Everyone will still buy the next game. Everyone will still fiend for the next reward. No matter what. So why would they give a shit if they can not care and still make money off of you?

I think the reason it goes up over time because the season rewards get worse and worse so we lower what we consider good lol.

this is why i love the way league does it. everyone knows it's going to be a victorious skin, just a matter of what random champ it's gonna be. I would appreciate that in rocket league. I could be wheels, decal, banner, anything. but make it same every year and spend the season putting in effort to make it always great

I admit I am heavily biased and I might be the only one with this opinion, but in all honesty? I REALLY wanted those season 5 dragon banners (I still do). They are the very reason why I started playing ranked. I thought (and still do) those looked cool. Sadly, I couldn't get a rank in time to get one. :(
