If you aren't familiar with the sweeping story of salvation, the "theo-drama," you won't fully grasp any particular part of the story. Today, Bishop Barron unveils the five acts of the biblical drama: Creation, the Fall, the formation of Israel, Jesus Christ, and the Church.
A listener asks for some recommended biographies on the life of St. Thomas Aquinas.

I just read an article by someone who's very much not a fan of bishop Barron. It went on about how the bishop touts the size of his audience, how his evangelization method is not like the pope's, how an "especially conservative bishop, and not even an ordinary but an auxiliary, exercise such overweening influence" by "crossing canonical boundaries", how his productions have a "grandiosity unseemly in a cleric", how he wants to turn his media ministry into a "movement" (said in a condescending tone, as if there was something wrong with a movement), how the WoF sells things on Black Friday. His final concern is the bodybuilders in his ministry. Ok, I don't mind or particularly care about bodybuilders, and I'm very much an enthusiast of healthy lifestyles. And I also tend to discredit left-leaning people-'s opinions on someone they claim to be "especially conservative". But this time I feel like writing something in defense of the pastor. Not that he needs to be defended by a random guy online, but you get it. Bishop Barron is one the most relevant catholic evangelists today. His ministries truly reach people. It's honestly sad that people with other ministries feel the need to compare themselves with him. It's not about him, we're all on the same team. If they think bishop Barron is arrogant for putting out homilies or lectures, that's just a projection of their own envy and frustration. The bishop's works are here for everyone to see. Test it. It's pure catholicism, but in a way that dialogues with culture without making compromise in doctrine. How many people have achieved this? Often we either "preach to the choir" or become so liberal in engaging with culture that we lose our catholic identity. I don't see this happening in his ministry. And for that I thank God for this bishop's life and work. Dear bishop, if you're reading this, thank you. You're a true pastor in Christ's Church, a big inspiration for many people, and I hope your work only grows.

I agree with you entirely. As to the "criticism" that he is too conservative, there is one site claiming to be Catholic that criticised him for being far too liberal. Well you can't please everyone and if you think you are pleasing everyone, then something is seriously wrong with what you are doing.

Thank you Bishop Barron for another great lecture. I think the novelty of modernism has confined us into our own little plays, our own little relativist worlds without realizing that we are supposed to be part of a much bigger story. For a few years now, I have desired to be part of something bigger than myself. What I have, I need to play it out in the open and into the world. I'm only just beginning to discover it. Even for many Christians, we tend to confine our faith to our personal lives and often that faith needs a lot of development too. How often do we think of the Church as a body consisting of all of us and that we must strive to the same goal which is salvation? How often do we think that our faith must affect every choice we make starting from ourselves, our closest family then to the bigger society? The confined way of thinking has limited us severely on what we ought to do as priests, kings and prophets of this Kingdom established by Christ on Earth. Aged 27, I now find myself as a religious conservative. I'm a sinner and need an ongoing transformation and so I need grace. In my late teens and early 20's, I was close to being agnostic and picking up New Age stuff on KZbin because my religious conscience was so uninformed. I learned from Catholic KZbinrs, starting with Bishop Barron so much about my faith way more than what I learned from homilies or 12 years of education in Catholic schools. What I struggle from now is that no one around me shares the same view. No one from my parish, no one from my friends seem to share the ideals I wrote above. Everybody seems to be individualistic on faith matters and ignorant of objective truths. Everyone frequents the perennial problems of the society but hardly anyone acts like a priest, prophet or king. What you see with the millennial are social justice warriors with their posts on Facebook which do nothing to render justice in the real world or at least partially solve the problems they were complaining about even by an inch. I'm not claiming to be holier than other people but I find myself alone in this quest, unsupported by a close shepherd that pushes me to be holier or even a few good friends who shares my mind.

And are you a member of the Catholic Church hierarchy or an influential Catholic theologian who is leading others into heresy? @@clotildadsouza9941 My dear sister in Christ Jesus, I understand the differences between the beliefs of Muslims and Christians. We, who are Christians, are called in these times of common struggle to bring compassion to those in our midst. 1. We can only inform in love, the truths of our faith as taught by His Eminence Cardinal George and His Excellence Bishop Barron and His Holiness Pope Francis. 2. We are called to first seek to listen and to understand before asking someone else to hear and understand us. 3. We have a lot more in common with the Muslim people than there are differences because they are sons and daughters of Abraham. 4. There exists in all religious truths, seeds of the word upon which resides ways to make a few points of connection. 5. Regarding differences, these are also areas within which there are possible ways we are able to connect, if only because, in these are found, also common ground if only by recognizing and acknowledging that we observe there are differences. Yet, also inviting the others to answer for their reasons and engaging them in simple dialog on these areas with concern and profound care for our brothers and sisters in God. 6. By returning, yet again, to our areas of mutual understanding, to common ground, we are able to show that primarily, we seek to connect and that we are united in our common purpose which was, is, and will always be to love and give praise to God, to adore God, to glorify God above all else and to love our neighbors and love and forgive our enemies. Judo Christianity beliefs makes no sense and to say its absolute truth is ridiculous because it ignores other religions or other people of different cultures and traditions. As a Hindu Hinduism existed long before Christianity Krishna came to Earth and did what Jesus did only 126 years earlier. The year 3229 BCE The idea of God taking human form Leela is not exclusive to Christianity. There is only one God the wise man knows he comes in different forms. Its foolish to assume only the Abrahamic religions Christianity Islam and Judaism. Which is relatively young. Holds the true message.

I read Creation to include Adam’s priestly and regal offices, along with prophetic. The Lord has Adam ‘name’ things. This is declarative and suggests not mere arbitrary authority but sense of the essence of things. As if we could ask why name this or that a “ lion” and Adam says, the creature has “lion-ness” in its core.

I propose the following hypothesis: that, at the heart of the church's failure to excite modern humanity (or, put differently, part of the reason for the explosion of the "nones") lies the church's refusal to reframe its notion of original sin. As a result, its proclamation of the theordrama falls flat. We are not morally deficient because of a singular historical event in Act 2, but as a result of evolutionary attributes (aggression, jealousy, possessiveness, greed, etc) positively present in Act 1 of the theodrama. They are positive because they contribute to our early survival as a species. They grow into being negative in Act 2 because our numbers have increased so that collaboration has become the more urgent and because we become increasingly capable of making free moral choices. Bottom line: I believe that unless and until you learn to explicitly weave the evolution story into the theodrama, you will increasingly lose modern educated humanity.
@AngelBien
@AngelBien 2 жыл бұрын
This is a really unique insight. I've already read stuff about how Evolution doesn't contradict the Bible as it's not a Science Book but a compilation of historical, moral, philosophical, poetic literature- more abstract than out current view of Science. Pope JP II reiterated it in one of his letters. Weaving evolution into theodrama sounds desirable because it's like we're acknowledging these modern facts about our beginning but the thing is we don't know exactly how the fall happened, like literally, we just know it did and we are given a story in Genesis about how Adam and Eve comitted original sin. Trying to insert evolution into the Bible is just not honest. It might be more helpful for us to learn how to read the Bible and know it's history, meaning and implications. More people leaving the church, that's sad, but we gotta tell the real story and live out it's truth. That's what will reall draw people closer to God.
@DK-tk1nu
@DK-tk1nu 2 жыл бұрын
@@AngelBien Thanks for the response, dear friend. You are absolutely correct: we don't know the details of how modern humans came into existence, neither from Genesis nor from evolution. But we know somewhat more about the matter from the science of evolution than from Genesis. Biblical scholars agree that the creation accounts in Genesis are written in the style of Hebrew poems. The big truths that these poems convey is that God is supreme and brings everything into existence from nothing, God loves what God creates and regards it as good. The Genesis creation poems then also tell of how God allows the conscious beings that God brings into existence the freedom to make choices, and that this means that they sometimes choose badly. Neither in Genesis nor anywhere else in the Bible is the term "original sin" used. It was introduced by St Augustine. The Church does not oblige us to buy into what Augustine taught in every detail. In fact, over the centuries, alternative views of have been put foward, inter alia by theologians like Duns Scotus. The scientific theories of how humans evolved are also only partial accounts of the past, and the full story can probably never be known. But the broad scientific accounts do not envisage sudden once-off events like the sudden appearance of a homo sapiens couple --- Adam and Eve --- who commit a first sin that somehow affects humanity forever. Rather, the scientific narrative talks of "emergent phenomena" that gradually take shape. So I am not trying to "insert evolution into the Bible". The two narratives are of different literary genre, they speak of different truths, and they are not in competition at all. The Church needs to bring the two narratives closer together to be able to have more credibility. So far, it is not doing a good job of this because it clings to the idea of a "first sin" affecting everything thereafter, which is an unnecessary piece of theological fiction that does not advance the cause of spreading the good news of Jesus.

Act 1 Creation: Why does the creator of the Universe require praise? Contrary to your comment, it was the Catholic Church that constantly told us ( children) how unworthy we were - not our parents. Many prayers reinforced that teaching: “Lord I am not worthy……..” Act 2 The Fall: Why did an allegedly “all just God” punish all subsequent generations for Adam and Eve’s “original sin” - a transgression from long ago for which they had no knowledge and therefore NO responsibility? Why were all the billions of children who never asked to be born, rendered unworthy? Thomas Aquinas claimed that original sin was transmitted down through the generations via semen during intercourse. What impact did that have on Catholic attitude about sexuality? Act 3 The Old Testament: The Old Testament is a paradoxical foundation for Christianity. There are so many passages justifying cruelty, murder and even genocide that it cannot be reconciled with those aspects of Christian teaching claiming a just and loving God. For example: We are enjoined in Micah to do justly and love mercy; in Exodus we are forbidden to commit murder; in Leviticus we are commanded to love our neighbor as ourselves; and in the Gospels we are urged to love our enemies. Yet think of the rivers of blood spilled by fervent followers of the books in which these well-meaning exhortations are embedded. In Joshua and in the second half of Numbers is celebrated the mass murder of men, women, children, down to the domestic animals in city after city across the whole land of Canaan. Jericho is obliterated in a 'holy war'. The only justification offered for this slaughter is the mass murderers' claim that, in exchange for circumcising their sons and adopting a particular set of rituals, their ancestors were long before promised that this land was their land. Not a hint of self-reproach, not a muttering of patriarchal or divine disquiet at these campaigns of extermination can be dug out of holy scripture. Instead, Joshua destroyed all that breathed, as the Lord God of Israel commanded' (Joshua, X, 40). And these events are not incidental, but central to the main narrative thrust of the Old Testament. Similar stories of mass murder (and in the case of the Amalekites, genocide) can be found in the books of Saul, Esther, and elsewhere in the Bible, with hardly a pang of moral doubt. It was all, of course, troubling to liberal theologians of a later age. It is properly said that the Devil can quote Scripture to his purpose. The Old Testament is full of so many stories of contradictory moral purpose that every generation can find scriptural justification for nearly any action it proposes, from incest, slavery and mass murder to the most refined love, courage and self-sacrifice. It is moral multiple personality disorder. Act 4 What did Jesus who spoke Aramaic, actually say? His followers were from Nazareth and were most certainly illiterate. The Gospels were written in Greek 30 to 75 years after Jesus died. We only have copies of copies of copies of the Gospels written in Greek. The first complete copy dates to the 4th century. Act 5 What is the evidence that the Catholic Church has been a force for good? What is the evidence that Christianity has helped correct any of the serious shortcomings of our species?

Hey man, you have a really long comment with some really thoughtful questions. I can't answer each one well enough but I promise you there's an answer for each one (Bishop Barron and Ascension presents has some on Violence in the Bible, I think Catholic Answers has dealt with most if not all the questions). I will quickly say that God 'requires' praise not because He needs it but because it's how we reciprocate the Love He gave us. That's what we were made to do, to be part of creation to love fully and well. Next, I wanna say I really feel for you on the whole being-told-you-are-unworthy thing. I grew up in the 90s and early 2000s , I didn't hear that much guilt narrative growing up in church (everything was watered down, and feel good, which was nice most times as a kid but also kinda shallow). But even then, life will always find a way to show you how inadequate you are. So I know what it feels like to feel worthless or not good enough. In this context though (Lord, I am not worthy) we are focusing on the fact that we have sinned against God and that it is a true grace that He keeps giving us chances ( instead of 'starting over'). It's also meditation on our status as creations of God and our inability to deem equality with the Creator. Remember though what happens in the story where that was taken from: the centurion says 'Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only say the word and my servant shall be healed'. After which the servant is healed! In the mass, we say it b fore receiving the Eucharist. So it's an expression of a great anticipation and confidence to receive God! Also a deep gratitude of his generosity.

@@AngelBien We grew up in different times. While you grew up in the 90’s and 2000’s., I came of age in the 1940’s and 50’s. During my Catholic school years in the 1940’s and 50’s, I, along with my Catholic schoolmates, went to Confession almost every Saturday to avoid the pains of hell (explicitly stated in the Act of Contrition) and to reduce our suffering in Purgatory. Based on Catholic teaching taught by nuns, brothers and priests and not CCD teachers, the very best outcome for a BAPTIZED Catholic would be to die before reaching “the age of reason” unequivocally defined in the pre-1992 Catechism as age 7. That kid would go straight to Heaven with no detour to the horrible suffering in Purgatory. But if a pubescent kid willfully retains a sexual thought and dies in an accident before going to Confession, that kid goes straight to hell! Purgatory was a frightening destination for almost everyone who was not destined to hell. So we sought all those indulgences sprinkled throughout Our Sunday Missal indicating the exact number of days we could lessen our time in Purgatory by performing the specified action such as a novena, stations of the cross, etc.. Many of the prayers at Mass were offered for “the poor souls in Purgatory”. In short, Catholic indoctrination in those days was psychological child abuse.

Where does the story of salvation fit in with the millions of years of pre-modern humans roaming the Earth? Does the story of human evolution come to full circle with the story of salvation?

Isn’t Gods story or his drama essentially also his ego drama that revolves around him?

In a way you're right but worship to God is Just, precisely because He is God. Because we're used to dealing with human beings that are equal to us in dignity, we rightly know that when a person is egotistical or in their own egodrama- that becomes pathological. But with God, well, it's only proper that He receive the devotion of His creatures- being the Creator. Don't worry though, God is God, not like the broken people we know and are. So He will not abuse us, if anything, surrendering to Him makes us flourish!

Compare Christianity to our terrible modern day identity politics. In the former you can achieve salvation in the latter you are relegated to perpetual guilt and damnation.
