On December 26, 2020 life was forever changed for Sam Mills and his family. After being ejected from his vehicle, Sam endured serious, life-threatening injuries including a traumatic brain injury. This type of tragedy is both emotionally and financially devastating for families. The Kailee Mills Foundation's Family Assistance Program was designed to ease this burden for families experiencing loss and hardship from vehicle crashes so they are able to be present with their family during the healing process. Thankfully the Kailee Mills Foundation was able to offer this assistance to the Mills family in hopes that it would make a diffference and allow their family to come first! Praise The Lord Sam is recovering and able to continue pursuing a beautiful future. #GodIsGood www.kaileemillsfoundation.org

I received a visit at my front door by the police. My son had left for work 10 minutes prior. We drove by the accident scene on the way to the trauma center. I knew when I saw what was left of his car we would be facing a life changing event. I signed the withdrawal paperwork and held him as he died. This was 3 years ago, losing Rick ended my life in essence. I exist but am destroyed. Medication, hospital stays not therapy had been able to bring me back. I make an effort to remind my friends to give that lecture to their kids about seat belts, being distracted by a cell phone or speeding. Your family is blessed beyond belief and I am so happy you have your boy. ❣️

I never wore seat belts. One day I felt impressed to put it on. So I went ahead and put it on. 5 minutes later another driver ran the red light and we were broad sided on my side of the vehicle. Our vehicle went into a display window of a store. One of the things that was revealed in the investigation is that if I had not been wearing a seat belt I would have went through the front window of the vehicle head first into the display window because of the impact. I walked away from the accident with bumps, bruises and cuts. The accident was over 25 years ago and I always wear my seat belt. I give all the credit to the Lord for His protection on that day.

@@Dennise7 @Kailee Mills Foundation It’s heartwarming to hear you give the glory to God. He speaks to us in so many quiet ways, and we will hear him if we just listen. My encounter was not seatbelt related, as I was very compliant with that, (my dad was a cop after all) but I was in a near miss several years ago myself and I know it was HIS grace that saved me as well. Here is my short story… From a rural area of Myrtle Beach South Carolina, after a fun weekend with friends, I was heading back home to Florida. I was 21 and this was my first solo trip out of state. After hugs and tears and promises to call whenever I stopped and resumed my journey, and a fuel fill up, and snack stop, I was ready to hit the road. As I exited the gas station to the stop sign from the side road, I was waiting to turn left (southbound) across traffic onto a two lane divided highway. I saw only a semi truck approaching from my left, headed northbound in the outside lane closest to me. I knew I had plenty of time to cross in front of the truck, over to the median where I would then turn left into the southbound lanes. But just as I began to proceed across to the median, for some (to this day) unconscious reason, my foot immediately stomped the brake and aborted the acceleration into the roadway. In those few seconds that I waited for the semi to pass, a vehicle suddenly appeared in the inside northbound lane, adjacent to and overtaking the semi at well beyond the posted 65 mph speed limit. While I would’ve had plenty of time to cross in front of the semi, the car that was hidden from view till that last split second would have T-boned me in his inside lane and I would not be writing this now. I have come to listen to those instincts, trust that intuition, and hear the voice of my higher power. It sounds like you heard and followed that quiet voice as well. It was inspiring to read your story, thank you for sharing, and please continue to share as I believe you have been given the gift of opportunity to influence positive change to people who might not otherwise hear it. ~Blessings

My friend would not ride with me unless I put my seat belt on nor could I be a passenger in her car if I didn't wear my seat belt. She got me in the habit of wearing it. Not long after that, I got in a bad accident caused by a drunk driver. Had I not been wearing my seat belt, I no doubt would have had very serious injuries. I was always thankful to her for forcing me to wear it when I didn't want to.

I don't understand why they don't wear seat belts they grew up with car seats and hopefully families who by this time must have grown up with them too. I am 64 years old and I was a young adult when seatbelts became law. It was hard for us. I just don't get why it isn't second nature to them.

I am an avid seat belt wearer & feel odd if I'm not buckled up. A seatbelt saved my life when I was hit by another car head on. The police officer who was 1st to look into my car was pale faced & seemed shocked 😲 when I responded to him and got out of my car....he told me that he had seen cars with alot less damage & the people inside were dead. I did lose consciousness briefly from the impact but other than a few really huge bruises, was fine 🙂 👌 I ALWAYS tell people to buckle up!

My daughter was not one for wearing her seatbelt. But the day she left her boyfriends house she absent minded put on her seat belt. No 4 blocks away she lost her brakes at a red light and collided with a van. She knows that had she not put on her seat belt she would have gone throw the windshield. She still doesn’t know why that particular moment she put on her seat belt, but since she has never forgot to put on her seat belt on since. Someone up there was riding on her shoulder for luck and she got the best blessing ever.

It's NEVER "too soon" or "disrespectful" to talk about the stupid choice not to wear a seatbelt!!!! Maybe if we talked about it MORE it would save lives!! I was in an accident in '67 thrown out of a VW Bug. It didn't have seatbelts as a LOT of cars didn't in those days. I was lucky I landed where I did, BETWEEN a lot of boulders. And the car rolled but landed wheels down on top of me. So the car probably bounced and broke my pelvis and jaw. I was so lucky. A couple years after that I bought my first car, a 64 Ford Ranchero. It came with only lap belts (maybe better than nothing) anyway, I realized that belts HOLD YOU IN THE CAR!!! I have NEVER not worn a seatbelt since then even in parking lots. It would be like riding a roller coaster with out the safety bar! My son was born in '77. How I would jave loved to hold him in my arms on the way home (and every waking hour) but he went home in a car seat and EVERY TIME we were in the var! He was hyper-active, but in the car he was perfect as could be. He wasn't very old when he started trying to fasten the seatbelt by himself! I have read that parents are their children's first driving instructor. Lots of things you should be teaching your children about driving especially wearing a seatbelt and you should be a good example each and every time! What part of "ejected from the vehicle" or "thrown from the vehicle" can't people picture? And not wearing a seatbelt can harm or kill OTHERS if you're thrown around in the vehicle, you're thrown on the road and someone swerves to avoid your body. Or rescuers get hit trying to CLEAN YOU OFF THE PAVEMENT!! Not wearing a seatbelt is STUPID and IRRESPONSIBLE!!!

I’m 18 but when I was younger, maybe 10-15 I NEVER wore my seat belt until me and my family got into an accident it wasn’t even that bad but it scared me so much I started crying and I was afraid to even be in a car for months afterwards. When I saw that my mom broke her ribs and arm that really gave me a reality check to start wearing every time no matter what.

Glad their son is doing great. Also, it's important to put your dog in a quality harness or quality secured crate if they are riding in the vehicle. Not front seat as the airbag can kill them. Too many people go freestyle or worse yet, put them on their laps which can cause an accident and hurt others in the car too. Don't let them look out the window either- one pebble can blind them. Be safe out there people.

@@dellagriego7032 I love Shi Tzu's. Yes, do him a favor and put him in a high quality and secured crate, in the back. Not a cheap on that will break. We use a "Sleepy Pod" brand harness (passed safety tests- most others do not) but a Shi Tzu is very light, a crate might work better. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pnqro3eaqsSVjKc If he has to be in the car, you have to take extra steps to protect him. Seat belts are designed to protect the passenger correlation with the airbag, however, the passenger has to be facing forward, feet on the floor, with lap belt low across hips, and the shoulder belt across the collar bone. If the passenger is out of position, then the seatbelt can cause injuries. There’s some scary videos of folks with their feet on the dash or with the shoulder belt behind or under the arm of the passenger.

I was saved by my seat belt, as it held me upside down for an hour. The EMT's cut the belt, and I was able to drop the 2 or 3 feet. I was hurt, but I felt no pain until much later. I'd been given a lot of pain drugs to stay still. I was alert the entire time. I broke 7 ribs on the right, 1 on the left and my breast bone. We're awaiting the inquest, it's in october, but a few suggestions, are that the Air Bag squashing him so considerably may have hugely contributed to his death, as his injuries were all torso related. I'm praying this isn't the case, coz knowing that something that's designed to save you, actually killed him, will be difficult to information to live with💔

In 1986, I'd gotten food for my sister and I and was heading to pick her up from work. At that time cops couldn't stop you soley for not wearing a seatbelt, but if they stopped you for something else like speeding they could ticket for no seatbelt. I started pulling away from the curb and stopped and put it on. I was a sporadic seatbelt user(17 years old then) Less than 3 miles down the road a giant bug of some sort flew in my window and I took hands off steering wheel trying to bat it away. I looked up in time to see a parked UPS truck but no time to react and hit it going 30mph. I had a huge bruise in the shape of the seatbelt strap across my chest, and a friction burn on left side of my neck from seatbelt locking but was otherwise totally unharmed. I am 100% convinced I'd have hit that truck head first without that seatbelt on. I always wear it. When my now adults daughters were younger and in seatbelts if I heard a click I pulled straight over til they re buckled. It only took a few times for them to realize I was not playing where seatbelts we're concerned. They both wear them to this day.

I do not understand why parents don't reinforce seatbelts if their child is going to be behind the wheel. With my daughters, it was never an option. If they were caught without their seat belts on, they were grounded from everything, and they would have to ride the bus to school.

both share some responsibility. truck needed to wait until lbooth sides were clear before crossing with a trailer and blocking the lane. Then again the rider seemed to have plenty of time to react but he barely slowed down( might have panicked and locked brakes though), or speeding, or distracted for a split second. In the end as a rider its usually your ass on the line so ride like your invisible and its not up to other drivers to save my life. Remember. You may be right and they may be wrong, but your still dead. That's me 2 cents. Ride safe

I’m so glad Sam is OK. Are there no seatbelt laws in the USA? Where I live, it is illegal to not wear a seatbelt. There is a substantial monetary fine if the police catch you unbuckled. And if they catch you driving with children who are not in the appropriate restraints, the fines are even heavier!

My son wouldn't wear seatbelt either. he rolled his car 7 times in the air. They figure he was doing 100 mph rolled between 18 and 25 times. His first time he hit ground again he was on ground through drivers door. When he came to again didn't have a clue what happened. Ended up taking a helicopter ride to hospital. Took 5 years to get healthy. He fell asleep at the wheel. Dipstick still won't wear it. But he has twin boys that he has to explain "why don't you wear one dad"?

Today is my late son's 32nd birthday in Heaven. On Oct 2, 2009, wrecked a recalled (the next day) Toyota PU. Medflighted to another state, was in ICU on a vent for 6 wks. We had to make the agonizing decision to let him go. No idea how many times that truck flipped w/ him before he came out the window and hit his right side on a huge tree and slid to the ground hitting on a big rock. Not wearing a seat belt and no idea if it was the "sudden acceleration that caused him to lose control". He was 19 1/2 yrs old.

True story: a fellow was out walking along the canal here and saw a worse-for-wear looking (but still drivable) pickup truck just sitting in the grass near the water. The unbelted driver was ejected and landed in the canal. And died - don't know if from the roll or drowning. If he'd been belted, he could have driven home.

Does this group ever help with advocating for safer driving conditions on roads? We have a terrible problem here in Maine with young people thinking they are invincible behind the wheel. Speeding in a vehicle is the number one cause of accidents here. I live at a very bad intersection and we have kids using the intersection to pull donuts etc. We live near a water plant, Poland Springs, and so there are massive trucks going through at all hours of the night. If those kids are pulling donuts and a semi comes through at the same time I really don't want to think about what will happen. The speed by our house is 35 but most people do 55 or more. We see about 10 or more accidents per year at the intersection all due to speed or running the stop sign. The worst was a guy who ran the stop sign and was hit by a dump truck. I seriously thought I would find a dead body on my lawn when I went outside but miraculously the idiot that ran the stop sign had only minor injuries. One week, the week of the dump truck accident, we had two accidents in a row. I've been collecting accident photos in hopes I can present them to someone in order to convince our state to put in a stoplight to slow people down and force them to stop but I'm not sure how to go about it so I need a little help here. One time a storm destroyed the sign at the intersection and I called DOT but here we are about 6 months later and no one has come to fix it!! So obviously DOT ignores calls from citizens. There must be somewhere else I can bring my pictures and concerns. I want to do something before it is too late for the kids who do the donuts out here. I'm afraid they may end up learning the hard way that what they are doing is dangerous and I wouldn't want to see any parents have to go through that. My uncle was killed by a drunk driver so I am very passionate about keeping our roads safe especially since my uncle's namesake, my son, just turned 15 and got his license. My son is a very responsible driver but it almost feels like no one else around here is. I'm really desperate for help. Thank you so very much. God bless and keep up the amazing work you do.

Believe me, it’s not just Maine; here in Tennessee we have the same problem. Young people - how well I remember - have a belief that bad things happen to other people and that they have a certain immortality. My dad used to say “youth is wasted on the young,” and he was right. It’s a wonder most of survive our teenage years at all with the chances we took.

To the smug -as parents since seat belts and baby safety seats became a strict part of society we buckled our children in from the time they were born till they left home. There’s no better example than that! They know! They choose to wear them or choose not to wear them when they become independent. My own son Didn’t think it was cool and I found out he wasn’t wearing his and I would chastise him. Praise God he made it through till he matured enough to wear it. Sadly some don’t make it or get hurt.

Not a seatbelt wearer. How incredibly tragic. It's so important to be careful & to wear a seatbelt. No using the cell phone either. In fact, everyone should have a message that lets people know that they may be on the road & to leave a message. Make sure to purchase auto glass breakers & seatbelt cutters for everyone in the family. It's also so important to drive defensively. When at an intersection & the light turns green, don't just go, first scan right then left to make sure nobody is coming. There are so many safety steps to keep reviewing with young drivers. The fact is that drivers cannot ever become complacent. Complacencey causes most accidents. Thank God in Heaven their young son is doing better each day.
