Assuming that door was the only way to exit the plane, he had to have fallen through it. Even if the door had been tampered with to somehow make it easier to open, they would've still heard it close afterwards. The only thing that makes sense is that the people in the plane were all in on it. If the door was really that loud, unless they were all black out drunk, they would've heard it slam back close.
@brandiccustos1654

Possibly. Though it was already started that the engines were so loud that the pilot couldn't hear them shouting for help. So it's possible carry over sound could make something like that a bit less noticable or possibly dismissed as just "plane sounds."

@@brandiccustos1654 That's the thing that kept holding me up. If the engine was so loud that the pilot couldn't hear the screaming, it's possible that the people in the back couldn't have heard the door shut. They were most definitely aware. Usually Cadaber is very thorough but I think he left out some pretty important details/theories. 1. Drew and Baxter were the only ones to speak publicly on the matter. All publicly available first-hand accounts came from them. 2. Baxter claimed the exit door was not secured and “flapping in the wind”. (Not possible due to the slipstream and the spring loaded latch.) 3. Both men were careful to state how easily the door could be opened by accident, which was of course proven wrong. 4. Drew could’ve landed at 2 other airstrips that were closer and safer options for an emergency landing. 5. They instead landed on what Drew assumed was an abandoned beach, but turned out to be a beach used for military training. It took the military men more than 6 minutes to get within view of the plane after it stopped. At which point all passengers were outside. (It’s theorized that a replacement exit door could have been attached in this time). 6. A fisherman in the English channel claimed to have seen a “small parachute shaped” object falling from the sky at the same time and location the plane would have been over the channel. The description apparently matched that of what could have been the planes exit door.

@@threezpz Idk bro that seems like a really far stretch; because if someone had randomly bought a replacement exit door from the plane company (without actually needing one) that would have been surely noticed by the plane manufacturer
@creativedesignation7880
@creativedesignation7880 3 жыл бұрын
There is no way to tamper with that door to make it easier to open. The reason the door (and any door that leads out of any plane) was so hard to open had nothing to do with the door itself, but with the windspeed and resulting pressure from outside. There is no way to tamper with a door to reduce the influence of the windspeed on a moving plane, short of removing the entire door and part of the wall next to it and completely replacing it with a sliding door. I am guessing such a rebuilding would have been noticed even in that pretty shallow investigation.

I’m a pilot, aircraft mechanic and sky diver. Opening your car door at high speed is difficult. Opening at low speed is easy. Testing showed that it was impossible for one person to open the door and highly improbable that two could manage the task. However, the author does not mention at what speed the testing was accomplished. Retarding the throttles to idle, entering a shallow descent, sideslipping and decreasing the airspeed to minimum would make it significantly easier to open the door. I know this because I’ve done it many times and so has every other pilot who has had to open a door and chuck something out. I’d bet $50 bucks that if you slowed that plane down, you could get the door open enough to do the deed. I’d love to try it. I wonder if there’s any old Fokkers like this one still airworthy.

@darrylday30
@darrylday30 2 жыл бұрын
@@Nderak Most of the aircraft I fly have doors that can be opened in flight. Some can be flown with the doors off completely. These are perfectly safe, modern aircraft, fully certified to fly with doors off. There’s nothing particularly dangerous about them. I don’t think Fokker was concerned about the safety reputation of their aircraft. Their interests would be best served by just doing the test as accurately as possible. However, what I do find highly suspicious is the claim that the door “made a very loud slam when the door was closed”. You’re not going to hear the door slam at 100 mph any more than you would in your car at 100mph. The only thing you’re going to hear is wind noise and engine noise. It sounds like someone is making something up or misquoting the test results. I’d love to see the original written report from the Fokker mechanics. I’d still bet $50 bucks that the passenger could not get out at cruise speed even if he wanted to. Another $50 says the crew could have forced his body out by slowing the aircraft etc.

The narrator failed to realize the plane was a trimotor. The noise in the cabin would have been tremendous and there is no reason to think they would reliably hear a door slam. The ONLY real issue is whether the door could be opened enough in the slipstream for him to exit. The wind resistance on the door would vary with speed and attitude of the plane. The tests run by Fokker were being run by FOKKER who had no interest in telling the world that their planes were dangerous. Moreover, the test was run by people who did NOT WANT to fall out of the plane, a determined individual in possibly different flight conditions might have been able to work their way out realistically enough. It seems very probable that Loewenstein could have leveraged the door open far enough to slip out and after his last limbs made it out the the door it would have been mostly closed against them before slamming several inches shut. Noisy but hardly competitive with the racket of three big radial engines. Compared to all the wild conspiracies, it's a pretty likely scenario.

If I were to do such a test, no matter the time period, I would tie myself to the plane. Nowadays obviously with a modern rope and/or parachute, but even during these times they had ropes. Sure, you might get injured, perhaps even severely once the rope ends, but those weren't times where you throw bodies out of planes to see what happens to them, and a fall of a dozen meters stopped by a properly harnessed rope would surely be better than going from flight altitude to the ground. Now if he indeed went out by himself and everyone told the truth, and they couldn't hear the door slam shut, why would the 3rd richest person on the planet do that.

People can be suffering suicidal depression for years and just be good at hiding it. It happens all the time. I want to preface w/ saying the scenario centered around the other passengers being the culprits is my personal contender for most likely. With that said, I want to focus on possibility not brought up in any of the investigations presented. If we are correct about the passengers/ pilots, there is a way a pilot in on the scheme could make opening the door in flight much less burdensome. If alerted at the time the plot initiated, a pilot could put the plane into a "slip" with the exterior door to leeward. This would result in wind pressure on the door being significantly lessened. (Explainer for anyone not particularly aviation inclined: A slip is a maneuver wherein a plane is yawed, using only the rudder, left or right while the plane continues straight. This results in one side of the fuselage "kicking" out to one side into the wind stream. The opposite side of the fuselage is conversely shielded from the wind. Do the above so the exit door is on the side away from the wind and it becomes much easier to open in flight).

The door did not have to be “opened“ it merely had to be pushed a jar far enough to slip through. The door would not have to slam shut since his foot or hand being the last thing to exit would allow minor movement to close. Slow increase in noise level with a slow decrease again. A decrease to an acknowledged high ambient noise level already present. I have to discount the factory mechanics as being very biased, if not worried about being liable. Or at least seen as having an unsafe airplane. I know a car door has no problem being opened at high speed - not the same - but taking two men at 100 mph? No. Why believe two men could barely open the door, and they could then also force a man through it? No. He slipped the door open a little for a few seconds and slid through. “Did you hear something?” What? “I said DID YOU HEARSOMETHING?” WHAT?! Forget it.

i know nothing about airplanes (especially these older ones that they used i guess), but i do wonder if there would be a loud noise when the door opened (like the whooshing of air/wind)? or maybe the inside of these planes was so loud already that it would be concealed? i have no clue, but this theory to me sounds most plausible as well, to be honest there is hardly anything else i could think of
@doorhanger9317
@doorhanger9317 2 жыл бұрын
This is so obvious, it's clear how all the controversy over the door exists simply so there *can* be a mystery. Just the way you frame and talk about something can lead people into claiming that all of the man's closest assistants and possibly friends conspired to murder him, then simultaneously happened to be on the same plane with him and with no other people who weren't in on the plan being there. And then not only that, but they all decided to cover up their crime by creating a weird mystery in which nobody saw him leave the plane, a story only likely to spur police investigation and media interest? If they had simply framed a suicide, we would not be talking about this as an unsolved case today. I'd say the real mystery is why the 3rd richest man in the world took his own life, but the wife explained it pretty well: his love life was dead and mob connections were catching up with him. But his literal wife is of course brushed off with her reasonable explanations because we can't let some silly woman get in the way of a good mystery

Wait... look at the scematic of the plane. The lobby door also serves as the washroom door. When the washroom is closed, presumably the secretaries could see straight into the lobby area. It doesnt seem reasonable that he'd leave the door to close of the washroom AND lobby, not with well, ladies present. He'd close the washroom door with himself inside.

@@Nderak Let's assume the test the manufacturer did was honest, and let#s assume the plane didn't slow down. Three people to open the door, one to fly the plane, one to push him out, that makes five. There were seven survivors on board. The five other passengers could've done it alone (three open the door, two push him, while the pilots keep flying without noticing), but if you already got five people together, two more isn't that big of a stretch. Maybe not to take part, but at least to stay silent about it.

Lowenstein was simply going to the smoking area, which on the "Fokker Trimotor" was a wooden deck that was built on the side of the aircraft. This had always been an issue with this smoking area, as getting good fire to light your smokes, was difficult in wind conditions when traveling at 100mph. More than likely he was ducking against the airplane body, trying to protect from the wind so he could fire that bone, when he lost his footing and fell over the deck railing.

She and her affair man got in on ot and the other guy finding out was either forced or had no other choice but to help them thats why he became an addict to cope with what he had done l. Jerrold J. Potter was a businessman in 1968 who had 2 grown daughters and belonged to such clubs as the Lions, Elks, Moose and the Illinois Chamber of Commerce. He also sat on the Pontiac, Illinois city council. He co-owned an insurance company with his brother. On June 29, he and his wife, Carrie, climbed aboard a DC-3 in Pontiac and headed to Dallas to attend a Lions Club convention. The weather was perfect. The pilot, Miguel Cabeza stated, "There was no weather disturbance to account for what would happen later." Less than an hour into the flight, somewhere over Missouri, Potter excused himself to use the lavatory. His wife saw him pause to talk to James Schaive, president of the Lions Club in Ottawa, Illinois. She turned back to the window to enjoy the scenery. It would be the last time she would ever see her husband. Half an hour later, Jerrold had not returned. Carrie turned to look at the lavatory near the rear of the plane. The door was shut. She worried that perhaps her husband was in some trouble. The plane then hit a tiny pocket of turbulence. Unless one were paying attention, one would not have noticed it. But up in the pilots' cabin, Cabeza saw the red "Door Open" light turn on. One of the emergency doors was open! Cabeza told his co-pilot Roy Bacus to go check the doors. Around that same time, Carrie Potter notified a stewardess that her husband was missing. She was worried that he might be sick in the lavatory. The stewardess checked the lavatory but it was empty. She encountered Bacus making his rounds and told him about the missing passenger. When he checked the emergency door in the rear of the plane, it was open a crack. The safety chain was lying on the floor. He went back to the flight cabin and told Cabeza what he had discovered. They theorized that perhaps the slight bump the plane registered might have thrown Potter against the door, which was near the lavatory, and the chain broke and Potter fell out or maybe he opened the emergency door thinking it was the lavatory door and was sucked out. A thorough search of the plane confirmed that Jerrold Potter was not on the plane. Cabeza radioed into the Springfield, MO airport that he needed to make an emergency landing. Investigators searched every inch of the plane but Jerrold Potter was not onboard. So, he must have fallen out of the emergency door. The trouble is, the amount of force necessary to open the door would be extremely difficult due to the pressure differential. Even if Potter had fallen hard against the door, that would not be nearly enough force for the door to open and why would he have fallen hard against the door anyway since the bump the plane experienced was barely noticeable? The idea that he would have or could have opened the door thinking it was the lavatory door is not tenable. Some thought that Potter was murdered in the lavatory and the killer threw the body out the emergency door but the same problem presents itself--how did the killer get the door open? Of course, why and how anyone would have killed Potter also needs explaining. A ground search was carried out along the plane's route up to Springfield but there was no sign of Potter which would be highly improbable if he had really fallen out. He would not have survived a fall of two miles and his body would have been found somewhere if not by the search party then by somebody. But there was not a trace of Jerrold Potter. Carrie Potter called off the search after four fruitless days because she was afraid too many people were putting their lives at risk trying to find her husband. Carrie Potter sued the Perdue Aviation Corporation for $800,000 and was awarded $80,000 which mostly went to pay off her legal fees. While the "official" conclusion is that Jerrold Potter fell from the plane; over 50 years later, there has been no trace of Jerrold Potter.
