On August 16th, 1942. Two pilots would take off on board an L-8 model blimp for a scouting mission, searching for enemy submarines. In the span of 4 hours, a mystery would occur that would continued to be unsolved to this day... nearly 8 decades later.

Going back to the spy thing and the briefcase with classified paperwork, they could have taken pictures of everything so no one would know and keep everyone guessing. Also if they are high up in the blimp with a machine gun and two depth charges how would they be captured?.... accidental would be my guess and the fact that it's the ocean with strong currents,sharks and other predators is likely why they were never found .

I don't understand why youtube keeps deleting my comment, there's no bad language in it at all. 🤦‍♀️ I'm a zoologist with a marine biology background, I was just trying to explain that if the two men fell, they were most certainly scavenged by the local fauna, which the SoCal coast is teeming with. During the time this occurred, large sharks migrate to SoCal in order to breed, so I personally feel it's very likely that the bodies of the two men would have been totally consumed, and their life jackets shredded to bits. But then this blasted website keeps deleting my explanation! ...Is this really all that offensive to you, youtube? Please don't delete this one.

Some thoughts from an experienced sailor: If you've ever been on a *ship*, not a boat but a *ship*, moving at really any speed, you'll know that even if you were topside and actively listening for a splash, you probably wouldn't hear it over the sounds of your own ship's splashing against the water. Waves increase this volume, even small ones. The men could have fallen from their blimp and no one would have heard a thing, or been able to discern the sound of their splash vs that of their own movement. Add to that that they were actively preparing to defend against a submarine attack, and no one would be paying attention to the sound of the water, since an attack would come from below the surface. If they had on Mae West life jackets, it would have been stranger for them not to have failed, since they were inflatable bladders, and a fall from that height would certainly burst them as well as the poor aviators in them. It is my strong, personal belief that they fell victim to misadventure, having fallen for whatever reason from a great height and died upon impact and sank below the waves.

life jackets or as they were referred to at the time as: an inflatable Mae West life preserver, or in short a Mae West. at the time of this incident the Mae West were still in the most basic of form really. Being a semi-reinforced cloth with rubber, which for the time were leagues better than the cork filled life preservers usually worn by fishermen at the time. The Mae West was fantastic for it's time, HOWEVER, inside of the vest itself were small carbon dioxide cartridge's that would inflate the vest after pulling on two cords. Pretty simple and such, very useful. The issue being is, those cartridges are not designed to hit the water at terminal velocity. The canister's most likely burst on impact, effectively exploding and puncturing the vests. Sending them to the ocean floor. It's not a stretch of the imagination either. A very quick search will show you that these vests, while robust, were really not that reliable in terms of things. Still far better than cork vests though, good lord

My theory is that they had intended to release a smoke signal to mark the oil slick location but either accidentally dumped fuel along with the smoke signal or a short caused both to activate. Since the door was already open the sudden release of fuel unbalanced the blimp and both men flew out of the gondola door. The 2 now dead men were floating in the water and the smoke signal ignited the dumped fuel. The two men's bodies slowly burned away along with their lifejackets. At a certain point the lifejackets became so burned that they released the 2 bodies to sink below the waves. Thanks to the wick effect the buoyant fat in the head and torso would have made the bodies sink more readily. Sharks or other sealife consumed the remains. Rewind back to the moment the men fell out, the blimp, now roughly 300lbs lighter, shot up to its maximum height. The emergency mechanism to keep the blimp from bursting at high altitude caused it to begin moving inland. This explains why military and eye witnesses seeing smoke in the area thought it was just a smoke signal when in actuality it was the dumped fuel and men's corpses burning. It explains most of why the gondola door was open, why some fuel had been dumped, why no documents were stolen, why there was no evidence of the bottom compartment ever being wet from the ocean, and why there seemed to be an issue with electrical power.

After the crash, the blimp was restored and used as a training vessel. After the war it was given to Goodyear, where it was known as the Goodyear blimp, covering sporting events from 1969 to 1982. It's now been retired and has been donated to a museum in pensacola florida. They've restored it to look exactly like it did in 1942.

I actually don't think they went over in the ocean. If this story is correct then it seems HIGHLY unlikely, everytime people saw them everything was fine and they headed in the correct direction all the way towards land. I think the battery being dead affected the radio and they only got worried and jumped when the ship was in immediate danger. Maybe they landed on a abandoned building that was later demolished or just somewhere strange. The most experienced pilot saved people from the Hindenburg! He's the last person to risk hitting something electrical on a crash landing. They wore life jackets, extensive search, didn't take the raft, just everything points to atleast their bodies being found. Nobody searched weird places on land and everything seems to point away from water.

A body lost at sea often stays lost. Whether an accident tossed them out, or wind shear, or whatever - hitting from that distance, it wouldn't matter if the life jackets stayed intact, because the bodies wearing them would not be intact (to one degree or another). If surface or subsurface currents didn't whisk them away (and even if one did), these guys would literally be shark bait. Lots of scavengers would have felt that impact to the water and smelled the blood. This isn't like the USS Indianapolis, with lots of debris and both living and dead in the water, which is part of how there were survivors even when the pelagic whitetips came in, because the dead are an easier meal. This is two guys dead on impact with the water (and hitting water at 60mph has the same give as hitting concrete at that speed). The ocean rarely gives up her dead once she's claimed them.
@nate_d376
@nate_d376 2 жыл бұрын
The area that they disappeared in, is near the red triangle, where great whites hunt. I know, grew up near there, and surfed there. Still warm summer waters, and near the coast, they fell and became shark dinner, that's my guess.

it's not really true that hitting water at 60mph is the same as hitting concrete at 60mph. its really just a figure of speech used to illustrate that hitting any fluid at a high enough speed will hurt you. even colliding with a compressible fluid like air at a certain speed will kill you. but certainly a noncompressible fluid like liquid water will hurt you even at relatively low speeds. it would still be much worse to hit concrete though. hitting concrete at even 30mph will probably hurt you worse than hitting water at 60mph. the main issue at these low speeds is simply that water is not compressible, and it takes time for your body to displace water because of its viscosity. although relatively low, it's not zero. so some amount of energy is imparted into displacing the water but by the time enough of it has been displaced, a lethal quantity of kinetic energy has already been imparted into work and friction on your body parts. little shock waves in your tissue, as well as bending your limbs in directions they're not supposed to go, or at speeds they're not supposed to move at. so in that small period of time you can receive lethal blunt force trauma. but that's not the same thing as hitting solid, very hard matter like concrete. you can't displace concrete at all. much less of the energy will be absorbed by the concrete, meaning greater injuries. there are probably other reasons why hitting concrete is worse too, besides the lower kinetic energy absorption. like the fact that your limbs can't settle or move through the concrete the way they can through water. so what energy does exist in the collision can't be deflected into safely moving your limbs, meaning a lot more of it probably gets converted into shock waves. meaning it's kind of similar to what a bullet does to your viscera as it travels through you at speeds greater than the speed of sound in your tissue. I'm sure there are many other subtle nuances that I'm not aware of as well

The blimp is not rigid, just a big balloon filled with gas. It went up past its pressure height and some of the gas expanded and leaked out. Then when it descended, the gas contracted so it was no longer completely inflated. It bent in the middle because that’s where the gondola was attached and it’s the heaviest part of the blimp, it couldn’t support the gondola anymore so it sagged in the middle.

"How did no one hear the splash?" Have you ever been on a ship? Like, a REAL ship? As in, a military ship or even similarly sized cruise ship? The sound of those things tearing through the water and bobbing up and down is LOUD. Objects the size of human beings falling into the water wouldn't make a sound loud enough to even be noticed if you aren't actively listening for it. And even then, you need to be able to tell the difference between the splash of humans hitting the water, the splash of the ship as it goes through the water, and the splashes various animals make.

My father liked this video as much of his family from that generation were stationed in bases on the west coast and his grandfather My great grandfather was supposed to be one of the blimp pilots but lost a leg in a car crash. I know it's not that simple but he is sure convinced that the most likely explanation was that the men knew this was a suicide mission if a sub ever decided to surface and shoot st them. We now know that this wasn't much of a risk but back then try convincing those men that they were safe in an unarmored blimp. In his mind the men likely planned out with a friend or family member to wait with a boat at a specific point along the path and then flew it low during a point it wasn't under observation, cut any ballast and jumped into the water to be picked up and just lived in a rural area for the rest of their lives. I'm not so sure as unless they could get the blimp to under like 30 ft the impact with the water could incapacitate them and cause them to drown. Which I suppose would also explain why they weren't found.

HOOOOLE up... 0:23:45 When you have a life jacket on and have flight training you fall foot-first into the water. You can survive at terminal from just about any height like that. Additionally if one of the guys fell out and didn't have his stay on the other would have simply flown down to get them. If the more experienced pilot had been at the helm this simply wouldn't have taken both of them to begin with except if one had pushed the other out and both went. Admittedly these men wouldn't have had jump training but operating over the water they'd have definitely been checked for swimming and had basic ship abandonment instruction. We're talking about full outfits so water shock wouldn't be a concern.

I saw on another channel "aviate, navigate, communicate", returning routine radio calls for position checks is low down on the priorities list if you have your hands full with flying / navigating. Flying in wartime, possibly in the presence of the enemy, pushes that priority even lower.

I haven't seen the "The Battle of Los Angeles" video (yet), so sorry if I'm being redundant. Although tension was the primary driver of the whole spectacle, the trigger moment was a weather balloon(s) sent out by one of the AA regiments that was picked up on radar. Then came the air raid sirens, and then tense people had their fingers on the trigger looking up at the sky. I think maybe at some point somebody catches a glimpse of the balloon, fires, and then everyone starts firing. It's like the video of the cop that hears an acorn drop, thinks it's a gunshot and then shoots the innocent suspect. But then imagine 10 other cops on the scene. The acorn drops, the first cop fires, then the rest of the cops start firing indiscriminately in the same general direction. In their defense, they needed accurate meteorological data. The good news is that no balloons were harmed in the making of the whole spectacle. It got away. Not surprising considering the likely altitude of the balloon at the time of the sighting. A second balloon is mentioned that was sent up shortly after, but I don't know if that contributed, or was a separate 'enemy sighting' incident. Either that or it was a UFO incident that was subsequently covered up by the US government. --- Source for the airborn weather balloon claim: The Antiaircraft Journal. Volume 92, Number 3, May-June 1949 "9th Army AAA", pg. 4-5 This article is referenced on the Wikipedia page for the battle of LA, but the links are dead. If you enter it into "Google Scholar" search, it will link you to the PDF.

24:34 - "If they were wearing their life preservers why didn't their bodies float back up?" - "Mae West" life preservers must be inflated by pulling the tabs (there is no passive salt plug activation) and it's very unlikely the inflation mechanism/the vest itself would even survive the impact with the water and dye packs were only just becoming standard w/ Mae Wests at the end of 1941 so it's not unreasonable to assume a domestic/coastal guard unit would be low priority for new/updated gear... (and in the unlikely situation that they were wearing older or naval style cork or kapoc floatation devices that managed to stay attached to their bodies, they would only float a couple hours before becoming waterlogged and sinking)

Here are my additions (I realize it's not better than other ones, but I thought I'd share): 1) something fell out of the blimp, something valuable or important and they descended, one of them went after it and got into trouble and the other tried to help and failed/fell. 2) A similar version: they descended to a low altitude and one of them fell and the other followed to help. 3) Another: one got shot by a Japanese sharpshooter from the deck of a submarine and fell into the water and the other jumped after him to save him Personally, I tend to believe in version 1 or 2.

So I agree that the most likely theory is that one of them fell out accidentally and the other tried to help and fell as well. The reason their bodies were never found? They probably weren't wearing their life jackets. I mean, two were missing. But have you ever been near anyone experienced in their field? They are only cocky. They will break any rule they see fit to break and I'm sure no one was really enforcing the life jacket rule

That was before. It went above it's height limit, which damaged it and vented it's lifting gas. It then fell down. When it bounced, it lost 300 lbs from that depth charge it dropped and went back up.

101 flights are unusually notorious. Tragedy befalls any aviation flights numbered 101. It's a cursed number and has been retired. If for some crazy reason there ever is a flight of any kind numbered 101, don't go on that flight. It will not end well.

Middle of a deadly war. Seen but not picking up calls, knew the area well from many missions on the same route plus nearish land. Had lots of time to plan, missing life vests, no damage to the ship... sounds like a * simple* case of going AWOL.

I think your theory is correct, even the most experienced can end up slipping up, the more confident they are the more easily they will trip, meaning if they leaned on or near the door, and it’s not out of the question they would do so if confidence was too high, they would end up in the sea, and say sharks or something shows up and finds the body and decides to take them for a trip. Thus the bodies never show up, people forget to include scavengers or really any animal in the possible reasons why bodies are never found and in the ocean, not even the skeleton survives. Even on land, deer and squirrels are known for taking bites out of corpses for their own health reasons, so someone goes missing in the woods and chances are they are eaten up by all the wildlife, reason nothing is left behind? Because enough animals are in the area and enough of them are interested in scavenging some meat, even herbivores occasionally munch on some flesh and bone and this is a genuine problem for park security and police when trying to investigate cause of death in the woods do to all manor of animals eating the corpse and not just the carnivorous ones. Animals, the current, and just the general hostility of the ocean are all plausible, as well as drowning and such, I don’t think your gonna find a body if some barracuda pack or marlin school show up to check it out. Overconfidence is the deadliest of killers, and the easily most prominent if you pay attention to the amount of car caused deaths.

You know, pilots sometimes test their vehicles at the limits of their capabilities. I wonder if they may have decided to see what it was like near the highest safe altitude and accidentally went too high, and thus damaged the dirigible. Next, as they were coming down, they may have decided their military careers would be destroyed by this and so went AWOL. It would explain the later sighting as well.

I'm interested to know what these classified documents were. Was it standard procedure to have such a briefcase with classified documents on board the blimps? If not why did this particular lamp carry them, and what purpose did they serve? Even though the documents themselves were not stolen they may be Central to the mystery of what happened to the pilots.
