On completely serious note: Dylan Guptill reminds me of what KZbin supposed to be. Platform where people can post videos of themselves, doing whatever they want. There was no big corporation behind him, there were no character, there were no movie-like quality, there were no professional montage - just some random guy who wanted to share his views with people. He definitely deserve some respect for sticking to it even though all the crticism and hate he received was completely unasked for.

Guptill is weirdly timeless in a way. Even now, people still make memes about his videos and clips from him are still shared years after he's posted. I'd see myself unironically watching him if he had a channel now, it's like a microcosm of the era as a whole. He's somehow a product of the time yet can easily fit into our current landscape of fandom lmao

A quick note on Blaze the Movie Fan: He's not really a "Sonic lolcow." He's much more of a Pokemon enthusiast overall even if he's made Sonic-related videos. He portrays himself as a Pokemon trainer in his profile icon and in many videos, though the two videos that put him on the map (one of which I believe he's privated) are "Mario Pissing" and "Inside-a-movie: Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted," which are not primarily Pokemon related (though the latter video references it briefly). Now that I've mentioned his name in the comments there's a chance he might show up here come to think of it since he tends to google himself.

Early KZbin content on Sonic has been interesting to me, as a neurodivergent fan of the series. Either you find complete fools blind to nostalgia, and have bizarre interests, or the most sane out of them all, who’ve been the subject of ridicule from trolls before KZbin’s ToS on cyberbullying not that long after. It’s quite interesting but also sad and absurd. Dylan Guptill is one of the few who stand out. When he initially posted a list video on Sonic The Hedgehog’s female characters for Valentine’s Day, the toxic hatebase and trolls took notice and harassed him before he deleted the video from his channel(before it was archived and reuploaded). The fact Dylan joined the AVGN-clone trend is another thing I don’t know about him. Many of them have plenty of amateurish editing compared to James Rolfe’s due to experience in filmmaking. Guptill is quite the Jack-of-all-trades in early KZbin tropes(make a review like AVGN or be a direct copy of him, create a random sketch with minimal editing, or produce stopmotion/animation/short film pieces with stories to hook viewers in: Clayworld, FilmCow’s works, and subsequent Newsground Flash animations come to mind imo). I thank Guptill for having the lack of profanity in his AVGN-clone videos. He’s strongly against them, and his video detailing many reviewers from his time not writing a script, or professionally video-make beforehand. Based man.

I think we as autistic youth are drawn to sonic the hedgehog on account of his being a role model who's effortlessly cool and well loved by his community and frankly we envy that and emulate his personality trying to be as well liked and confident as he is. When I was a young lad I would have killed to have sonic's social skills.

SSG wishes he could speak as well as Guptil. Guptil would chew him out for the fact that he doesn't script his videos and is terrible at speaking on the fly, loading everything he says with sentence fillers (Yeah, Um, Basically, Pretty Much, etc). It's why I have a hard time enjoying SSG's content as much. There is this one guy on KZbin called Waifu Hunter Chris Gamefield whose entire schtick is making videos where he praises waifu characters from video games and anime in a mostly PG way and it's funny to me that he's making the same type of content that everybody crucified Guptil for doing, but not as 'cringe' (meaning not as interesting).

Guptill's an odd fellow. Was mostly raised by his mom, who's a voice actor and her stage name is DB Cooper. She's not like Tara Strong or Rob Paulsen level, but I guess she gets work here and there. I remember Blackbuster mentioning that Guptill told his mom on him and he was getting either angry email or voicemails about his "Sonic Brainfart" video, so Blackbuster actually really did a number on him.

I’m gonna point out that most of the characters in Sonic are underaged, but also Sonic’s cast is drawn in a very simplistic style because they’re freaking Saturday morning cartoons/XTREME! anime designs and finding out their ages is something you had to go out of your way to do back in the day, unless you were a kid who actually read manuals. I was one, but what I’m saying is no, I don’t think he’s a genuine creep. That’s not even to mention how half the characters hardly ever sound anywhere near their supposed age in English. He probably just didn’t know

I used to be one of those old slideshow commentary channels (privated all my videos since I was a dumb teen back then), and it is kinda interesting hearing the bits about Guptill's rant on modern technology as while it is pretentious and I remembered mocking it, he really did have a point in hindsight. Mainly with streaming services and how there is a decrease in third places for people to hang out at. Guptill though should really have conducted himself better since he came across as pretty pretentious about how he was, but he still was kind of funny still since there is an innocence that the Internet no longer really has with internet lolcows. P.S. What is the music that plays at 1:59:00 - 2:01:00

I have a bit more early info on Guptill. Back in the late-2000s he was involved with drama relating to the 4Kids Sonic voice cast. He apparently preferred the new actors, and as the Sonic fanbase was otherwise against Jason Griffith back then people got at him. I've seen people make responses to him regarding the drama (all gone as far as I know.) So it would seem that people already hated him way back when and were looking for any reason to dunk on him, that Top 10 being a golden opportunity to bury him, let's be honest, him speaking out against the biggest reviewers back then didn't help matters. Guptill epitomized the vocal minority on a lot of things but didn't express them in the best way, you can say water is good but still be an ass with how you express it. The fact people were already against him, it really shows. As for the Top 10 list, I think what helps it age so well, along with its ironic humor, is the fact that... he really hasn't been caught in anything disgusting, at all, and the fact that his comments in the video were a little questionable, but not too extreme, the only thing that went wrong was dropping the ball regarding the characters ages, but chances are he had no idea (should've looked into it but there you go). I think it would've been better if the video was called Top 10 Favorite Sonic Females, would've given him more of a leg to stand on when it came to the backlash. But, if nothing else it seems time was incredibly kind to Guptill and he's living his best life. As a side note, I also recall trolls on KZbin making their own hot Sonic character top 10s and going more explicit, or lazy, than Guptill, and people fell for them hook, line and sinker.

You deserve way more views, man. A lot of the stuff you cover is stuff that I remember from when I was a teenager and in my 20s. I don't know if you've already done this yet, but I would really like to see you do a video about the crazy amount of Sonic content that KZbin used to have. You know, back when freaking everybody made Sonic videos and it was all different stuff. Or the fact that everybody in the entire universe had a Sonic X AMV, and you could go on Google, type in a random thing, and then put Sonic X AMV and there would be one. It was a crazy time to be alive, man.

I first got online in early '09 when I was still a little kid, and with YT bein' one of my most visited sites back then, Guptill kinda serves as one of the symbols of both what YT was originally meant to be & the older Internet at large. People sharin' their authentic selves in a modern-day Wild West. And honestly, let's look at some of the hijinks he got up to: - Makin' a top 10 list of the hottest fenale characters in a certain franchise YEARS before mainstream waifu culture. - Brought up the stale nature of Angry reviews back in the day. - Made game reviews that were actually fairly informative & calm in a time when that was pretty rare. - Tried warnin' us 'bout the death of "third places" and the dangers of wider Internet integration into our lives(Which he was 1 trillion percent correct about). - Had some damn good editing for the time. He definitely bogged himself down with the more embarrassing videos he made, but really, he was also pretty ahead of the curve on a few things. If he just had a tad more self-awareness, he would've been fine. And thank you for bringin' up the issues with what BlackBuster said. Don't get it twisted, I love his videos and still rewatch some of 'em to this day, and I hope he's livin' a good life nowadays, but his callin' Dylan a PDF is the one thing I always had an issue with, even back then. But thanks also for makin' this at all. Even havin' been there when a lot of the more infamous stuff went down, this provided a lot of new info that I had no idea about.

Seeing people get mad about "omg the Sonic countdown video was a joke", but here's the thing - at that time, especially in the Sonic fandom, there was a LOT of that done in all thirsty sincerity. It's still done, we're just used to it as "Sonic crap". And like Dylan said, this video about "hot chick heaven" coming from a guy who had done so much sincere pearl-clutching made it even unintentionally funnier. He just seems to be a grumpy prudish uncle in a younger person's body, and that is inherently amusing. EDIT: Anyone else expect him to wham his head on that toolbox in that "exercise challenge response" video? That's not a safe workout setup.

I appreciate this video and your content and I mean this in the nicest way possible, but I think a 2 hour on guptill proves why we don't need a 2 hour video on guptill. You take a lighthearted jab at (I'm assuming) magicmush at the end there and I totally get it. But let's be real here 95% of guptills story really could be told in 5 minutes, the rest of his internet presence is aggressively average. Again I appreciate the deep dive but you really can't blame other creators for thinking his story isn't worth telling in full.

I disagree. No that wasn't a jab at magic mush, I like that guys content. I think a ton of stuff Guptill has made was worthwhile talking about, but most never went looking for it. I think to often people only see the highlights and never look for the other stuff, kinda taking away the humanity of the person in the process. Blending it down into just "top 10 sonic characters guy" but the dudes a person, a person most don't know that well, and I think showcasing that is interesting and worthwhile, at least it is to me. To each their own though.

As someone who spent as much time as possible from 1998 onward online it's so interesting how many weird stuff I had never been aware of, this being one of the them. I think it's due to the more fragmented nature of the internet making it much more varied, I tended to stick to various message boards about my hobbies rather than video content (probably because I was still used to slow speed downloads as the rule). By about 2009/10 I had branched out more but still never was much into KZbin much so seeing excellent coverage like this is super interesting, like finding an entire section of fascinating history you were unaware.

eek!!!! as an autistic guy who's admittedly been intensely hyperfixated on dylan's work for over a year now (with the fixation getting especially severe these past 8 months), this is a surprisingly well researched video and i find it *unbelievably* refreshing to see a video on the guy that isn't totally mean spirited! :) a whole lot of people are discussing what they think of the guy down here in the comments, and as... probably his biggest fan ever (you could ask anyone who knows me and they'd totally agree) i think what i find so nice about his stuff is the genuine raw unfiltered authenticity that all of his videos have, even to this day!!! other than what he's making videos about, his style of content hasn't really changed at all? unlike a large amount of youtubers nowadays who make content for the sake of the algorithm, he's still sort of doing his own thing. they're not too flashy or fast-paced and i personally find it all very comfortable. they've all got a charm that i genuinely don't think could ever be replicated by anyone else nowadays? they all just have so much soul that you can't really find anywhere else. outside of his infamous videos, he genuinely seems like a really nice dude who just likes to make things in his free time and he has a lot of respect for people who do the same. there was this one deleted and significantly more obscure video of his where he discussed *other* youtubers that were being relentlessly hated on and mocked, and even if he didn't care for their content personally, he never saw it as a bad thing and even defended them. as pretentious as his content might seem at face value, i do really think there's been nothing but good intention behind it all and i find it really really comforting to watch. guptill's completely unironically without a doubt one of my favorite people on the internet and i do appreciate this video :) as useful as all the old commentary videos are for finding lost media related to him, like i said previously it's nice to see something that isn't entirely just mocking the dude . also, he's a homestar runner fan and that's ultra cool

Man that internet one was incredibly confused. Half those arguments seemed to apply just as much to his "healthy alternatives," if not more. It's better to have no phone at all than a mobile phone that's off when someone tries to reach you for an emergency?

1:17:43 What is a Coney Island Disco Palace? Being from New York, not that far away from Coney Island, I replayed this section of the video like 5-6 times. Then I put the closed captions on to make sure what I was hearing was correct. I genuinely do not know what this means. Also this guy is spot on about smart phones and the internet ruining ppl. You contend with 'well just use these in moderation have balance' and yeah you're right but these companies have spent million engineering ppl into becoming hapless addicts. And they have succeeded ten fold. At this point the way social media is set up its almost like telling someone to use heroin in moderation. It could be done, but most likely doubtful. In retrospect this guy comes off as a PG Ted Kaczynski.

Oh shit! Guptill. All my fav tistic youtubers been hooking me up. Steve Wilkos and now Guptill! I remember Guptill from Sonic Brainfart back in the day. Never seen a deep dive, but definitely interested. Yeah, I agree. Calling him a PDF File is dumb. Just be honest and admit you rubbed one out to Rouge also.

I used to be subscribed SavageBroadcast back in the day. He used to have a lot of commentary videos, but he deleted and/or private them after he quit his channel and just kept his movie review videos up. I don't think I ever saw his debate with Guptill, it might have already been taken down by the time I came across his channel. I do remember that there was a response to Guptill's response to YBF91's video, which may have been what lead to the debate.
