In my opinion the strangest equipment in nhl history was Montreal Canadians goalie Bill Durnan’s “gloves”. He had custom gloves that allowed him to switch which hand he held the stick during game, doing this helped him be one of the best goalies during the 1940’s

How did this help him?.....especially in the 40's....where players could barely raise the puck. He was a great goalie...but switching hands had zero to do with it.

David Perron wears the tinted visor because of sensitivity to the bright lights from concussions. I think it's more of a safety thing than a style thing these days.

Re: Blackburn. We called that 2nd blocker a "Glocker" on the ol' GSBB. If you look close at the photos, you'll see it's not actually a 2nd stick glove. You can see the pocket next to the thumb in that one kneeling pic you used. It is a catch glove with a blocker board attached. This gave Blackburn the ability to cover a puck like any other goalie without risk of getting hurt.

It's important to note, that when Gretzky went to the Rangers, he too had a Nike skate that was just like Fedorov's, but with NYR colorway.
@BadGoy1488
@BadGoy1488 10 күн бұрын
Nah . Gretz in his first season with NYR ( 96 / 97 ) he actually uncharacteristically used CCM Tacks with Black colored Perfecta Blade Holders . The next season he would then use Nike skates ( with black blade holders ) as they weren’t the color scheme of the Rangers at all and it was a different Nike skate versus Federovs . Go check . As far as color schemes matching the uniforms you might be thinking of the days when Gretz was with Edmonton and he used Daoust Skates with Blue colored Perfecta Blade Holders . Then he wore Daoust skates again with L.A and used Black colored Perfecta blade holders . That’s about it as far as color matching goes only with Edmonton and L.A . Later With St Louis Daoust Skates with black colored Perfecta blade holders again . First season with NYR in 96 / 97 as I said before CCM tacks for a change with Black colored Perfecta Blade holders . Then the following two seasons in 97 / 98 and 98 / 99 he used a different Nike skate ( vs Federov ) with Black blade holders . The color of his blade holders ( black ) had stayed the same since he was with L.A until he finished his career.

I have a friend who was born with only one hand, the end of his other arm was basically a nub but he decided to be a goalie still. He played AAA all through minor hockey and decided to go to beer league instead of juniors but instead of going double blocker like Blackburn he had a prosthetic like glove, it would strap onto his forearm to stay on during games and the only bad thing was he wasn’t able to close the glove so he had to make sure he was catching the puck in the pocket otherwise it created a rebound. He told me there was a company that made a prosthetic glove that he would be able to close when he wanted to but it was around $20,000 to have it made so he opted to just learn how to catch the puck instead.

You could probably do another video like this. Cooperalls, aluminum sticks, offset blades, curved shaft goalie sticks, and the glow puck come to mind. Not sure if the offset blade or goalie stick actually made the NHL though.

I get the tinted visor thing. I have extreme light sensitivity now due to Covid and I can’t go to see my local team play without wearing tinted lenses. The glare of the ice is too much for me and I end up leaving half way due to migraine. I usually wear yellow or pink tints. However, the polarised visor that Ovi was wearing was a bit much and I can’t see any other reason for him wearing it that isn’t a cosmetic one. Also…I REALLY hope Crosby washes that jock strap!

Lange skates, the guys that use to make skis and aluminum tennis rackets. Lange tested the waters in mid-70’s with a plastic skate, with a hinge at the ankle and the old tubular blade. They weighed a ton and the back broke above the hinge. Needless to say they didn’t get anywhere, I never saw anyone else wearing a pair and I went back to Bauer after a year.

The yellow laces are just wax laces. They have been around forever, since the early 90s. I think the technology at the time and the availability of the wax was only available in yellow. The look become very popular, and companies like GRAF started making them standard in their skates.

Goalie equipment has a really great history as it evolved, not to mention the cheats like Haseks oversized shirts that protected the 5 hole, Garth Snows optimus prime shoulder extensions in the 97 cup finals or the guy (i forget exactly who) wore elastic strips between his legs! It's not cheating until someone makes a rule about it! 😉
