I had a labradoodle who taught herself to become a diabetic alert dog after I was diagnosed as type 1. Every night she slept with her head on my chest, or on my pillow, so she could smell my breath, and would repeatedly paw or poke me with her nose until I tested my blood sugar. She'd bark, lick my face, or go get my mom if I wasn't responding fast enough. She was a literal lifesaver because I would sleep through my cgm or pump alarms if my blood sugar was weird. (My blood sugar is very reactive, and especially in my honeymoon period, I would go into the 30s frequently) I was so, so lucky to have her. RIP, Honey

My 2nd dog, Petey, was a Chihuahua mix and despite his breed's infamous ancestry he never was a little demon and from the time he was a puppy, despite no training from me or my grandparents, would learn to listen and sit when told to, go to bed when it was around the appropriate time or prompted, be a very gentle lapdog even if he was offered food; waiting for the go-ahead if he caught some spilled food in the kitchen, he loved scrambled eggs. When I think back on it, the only time I've seen him aggressive against anything was a handful of mice we discovered he'd been taking care of that were raiding the back porch pantry. My grandmother, which has type 2 diabetes, her sugar randomly dropped dangerously low in the middle of the night, despite apparently being an OK level before bed (it wasn't a time where active monitoring equipment was available to us yet). He got up and started barking at their bedroom door, he sleeps across the hallway and right beside the fireplace, he's never woken anyone at night and even resisted the urge to howl whenever he'd hear a siren. But he kept barking so feverishly it woke my grandpa up and when he opened the door Petey rushed in and kept barking, now at my grandma. Grandpa noticed she wasn't waking up, and shook her awake enough to where she was lucid and groggy and didn't let her fall back asleep until she pricked her finger on the sensor, which showed it dipped to borderline comatose levels. If he didn't decide to warn us in time, I don't doubt that she might not have woken up again. He's been gone for over 13 years now, but I'm elated that all I can think about when I remember him isn't that he's gone, but the stability he gave during tough times, and the unconditional love that's still with us.

My dog, Bristol seemed to understand my vulnerability when I had my slr in front of my face and I was focusing on light, shadow & composition. I never asked her to, but any time I was taking a pic she'd come and stand leaning against my legs either in front or in back. She was once hit by a car (no serious injury). After that, she never crossed a street until I'd tell her the coast was clear; again that was all her learning without me teaching. One time, a big group of friends went on a big hike, and Bristol lost track of the group. We spread out looking for her. Jason found her at my parked van. She was so happy to see him but she wouldn't leave the van with him. So he had to go back to find me. When she caught sight of me, she joyfully rejoined the group. Sure made it clear that she was my dog. Smart girl to figure I would certainly reconnect with her at our car. one theory that i heard is that dogs were not domesticated directly from Grey Wolves (which while related are not direct decedent) instead they were domesticated from a sub-species of wolve that was specialized for scavenging off kills made by larger predators. This theory goes that Big Cats and dominant predators would have followings of "scavenger wolves" who would shadow them and pick off their kills after they left. This follows that these wolves used the same strategy with humans and would follow roaming human groups until they became properly domesticated.
@CordeliaAurora6 ай бұрын
We probably didn't domesticate them on meat alone! Humans wouldn't catch prey every day as it's a very difficult and tiring task. (Especially if you believe humans were persistence hunters, which for most humans we have no real evidence of. Hunting using projectiles is more likely). Humans couldn't and didn't survive on meat alone, as our bodies are not suited for such a diet. In early dogs, genes like AMY2B, MGAM and SGLT1 (genes related to digesting starch and sugar) developed as a response to the diet we were feeding them. Human ability to pick all kinds of edible fruits plants nuts and berries aided in that change. It shows even in dogs' ancestors, the wolves. Analyzed wolf stomach contents reveal plants leaves and berries in their stomachs. Don't try to feed your dog the same food that wolves ate! Eating raw meat can and will give your dog worms/parasites etc. As dogs are omnivores, it's best to feed them an omnivore diet rich in protein

fellow aboriginal aussie here, it's very interesting, they arrived quite late (3500 years) to the continent when it was relatively tame compared to when our ancestors first arrived (4-50,000 years) and had to contend with land crocodiles, giant snakes and relatives of the Komodo dragons. I imagine if they had come with us at the same time, then they might have turned out a lot more tame as we conquered the predators of the region together. I've never gone hunting so I not even sure if dogs make good hunting animals for kangaroos ( I know they do for wild pigs of course) though so I wonder if that's why the relationship never grew in their 3500 years of cohabitation with us.

There had been a fire in the area and they had a lot of extra dogs. I toured the shelter and there were so many. When I went to give them the food though, they told me that they were un-aliving all the sick dogs so they did not need the food. I had seen a sick dog and asked if they were going to do away with it, and long story short, I came home with him to save him. (completely unplanned). He is a wonderful dog, but had been very traumatized. That is a small thing when compared to how good he is though. Maybe some time you will run into your next partner too. my friend's dog, as a puppy, once bit her while playwrestling and unfortunately the bite was a bit harder than he meant for it to be. she cried out in pain and needed stitches. she didn't scold the dog for this mistake, and she didn't have to. he recognized right away that he had genuinely hurt somebody that he cared about. from then on, he never bit her again, even softly while playing. his teeth would never get too close to her skin again because nowhere in his sweet little angellic doggy heart was there a desire to hurt his best friend. it's beautiful to me, and fascinating too, how dogs and us have evolved to such a point where we don't need to fear these CARNIVORES living in our home, who are more than capable of ripping us apart if they want to - but they dont want to. they love us just as much as we love them. there is no fear to be had. only love. only family.

Worth noting that us humans have an incredible bond with dogs, but we also bond in friendship with many other species. Dogs share that characteristic with humans. Dogs not only have a primary bond with humans, but have a long history of bonding with other species. Many instances of dogs bonding and caring for cats, ducks, chickens, fawns, raccoons, pigs and the list goes on and on. A friend's golden retriever bonded with a fawn that appeared in their property from the surrounding woods one day. They wrestled, played and slept together and would share a bowl of water together. The fawn grew to be a magnificent 8 point buck, but it returned to the property to visit the dog almost everyday for 6 years. When the buck finally failed to return, the dog was visibly depressed for several months.

Day 2 Edit: oh my gosh this is the most attention I’ve ever gotten on a comment! Thank you everyone (and thanks Erica for the heart). I wanna say a bit more about my dog: His name was Anonymo Cowbell. It’s a goofy pun on Anonymous and the ‘more cowbell’ SNL skit. we found him as a puppy at an Occupy protest (hence the name). We called him Mo. We think he might’ve been a ‘cojack’ - corgi and jack russel mix. He definitely was part corgi - he had the face, the big ears (which tended to be pulled back), the thick fur, the coat pattern, and the cuddly personality, but his legs were longer and he loved to run. Beagle was another possibility, but his face was too different. Dude was a sweetheart through and through. He’d always beg for treats or walks or cuddles, and could never get enough pets. He made friends easily (so many strangers would come and tell us how cute he was), but big dogs scared him (he was attacked by one, it gave him a snaggletooth.) he’d even get along with cats. He almost never licked, rarely barked, and he’d make the quietest groans when you petted him. His gravestone reads “best boy”. He was 12 years old. Never was fixed, nor did he ever have puppies. We were considering finding him a mate, but then he… well. He Died. Bit late for that, now. What really kills me is realizing how many people remember him. This weekend has been filled with all sorts of friends and family telling us how much they’re going to miss him, sharing pictures of him… he really was best boy. Even you guys on the internet, who never even knew him… I’m imagining what it would look like if I gathered everyone who knew and loved him together in remembrance, and it would… it would be an actual funeral. My parents have what is politely called a lapdog. She knows her place in the world, and it's comfortably curled up in somebody's lap getting petted. You'd never think she was a wolf at any level. At least, my family says, until, she thinks that a stranger is attacking her pack. That has happened. That's when everybody present discovered that there's still wolf in there.

The relationship between dogs and people is amazing. The sharing and mutual understanding of facial expression and body language. I think back on human civilization 150 or so years ago. At that time horses were a part of many families, not as close a relationship in general but also very close. Sadly this has been somewhat lost. Harder to keep a horse in an apartment.

@@Cookie-ri9pz Yes although I never had close relationship with horses it seem to be a very close relationship. Humans forming a partnership with dogs clearly had a lot to do with human success. Dogs like to play and have a sense of humor. Horses like to play practical jokes. Had a horse snatch my windbreaker that I had taken off while I was shoveling out the stalls. He neighed, and shook it and then ran outside. He then brought it to me, but tossed it in the air when I reached for it. Then I turned my back to him, usually that would cause him to put his head over my shoulder. But instead he neighed, dropped the windbreaker, took a couple of steps and urinated on it. He thought he was brilliantly funny, and he was.

33:47 This....this is empathy. This is understanding. Wolves that did not follow the normal pattern - followed even by many humans today - of fearing what is different, and attacking what they fear. And it led for them - as it does for us today - to greater cooperation with groups none thought could coexist, to the benefit of both parties. To think that some wolves tens of thousands of years ago had a better understanding of compassion and cooperation than countless humans alive right now... If men in camps with spears can get along with wild wolves prowling around at night, and end up becoming best friends, then surely you can respect from a distance other modern humans who have different opinions or lifestyles from yours. It won't kill you to show a little compassion for your own species.

I know it’s been a bit, but my dog was family to me. 15 years and when his health failed. I spent the night before he was put down just cuddling and loving on him. He was in pain but he kept licking me and trying to comfort me. He was as much family to me as my siblings. He was there at my highest highs and lowest lows. When he died, he was cremated, and I had some of his ashes put in glass art. Some may find that strange, but I get a lot of comfort whenever I see it. Dogs have a shorter lifespan, but that just means we have to give them the best years we can offer, yk? I wish you the best of luck

It makes me happy that you mention the self-domestication hypothesis and the dingo because it's something I've been considering for a while now. We are used to the idea of "wolves" like in "modern wolves" but i think the idea that some canids were naturally already half-dog when all this started it's very plausible. About the "guilt" in modern dogs, many studies suggest that, while it is tone interpretation and a reaction to the social meaning of sanction, it's not guilt as we think of it: that is more probably dogs will anticipate sanction or punishment regardless of being aware or not of the reason for it.

It just comes naturally from me talking to them and narrating what's going on throughout the day. And what's especially fascinating: my dogs love to know! They want to know, they CRAVE knowing. They watch us and follow us and observe, and they take genuine pleasure in simply participating in whatever it is us humans are up to, everything from yard work, home repairs, to sitting together on the couch. It results in what I can only describe as a deep understanding. My dogs know me better than I do, and I'm in awe of them every day.

I remember being so confused the first time I met someone who didn't allow their dog to sleep in the bed with them. We also had plenty of cats who also participated in all of the fun, and got along great with the dogs. The old sayings about "cats and dogs" never made sense to me either. Anyway, now I'm an adult with my own human children. Our last dog passed away about four years ago, and our only remaining cat is 13 now. I'm absolutely terrified of bringing more home though. It hurts SO BADLY when they leave. I always feel like I'm paying for all of the love and happiness having them in my life brought me all at once, and that much pain in such a short time is unbearable. I know nothing is free though, and their companionship is unlimitedly worth the price you pay plus so much more. 😩💔

TW: depression, "self-termination" (you know what I mean). @pansepot1490 Not dogs, but my ex is trying to take two of my best friends away - two cats, one of whom is the first I've ever known since birth, and who I'd waited about thirty years to have in my life, and the other who jumps into my arms for hugs, rides on my shoulders every chance she gets, calls me at the top of her lungs if she can't find or reach me, and was raised by a very, very special cat who died before her time and was the one who taught this sweet little thing those tricks in the first place. Even my sister, who for most of my life was one of those "it's just a pet though" people (she's a wonderful person, just didn't understand the bond, and especially since she has an actual human child I sure as hell wasn't going to make the comparison around her) has done a full 180° turn around and recently said unprompted "that's like having your kids taken away with no way to fight it". It may sound "over dramatic" to some people, I get that, but for me? I am literally still alive because of my cat friends. Every time I think about having to go on without them it's so fucking bleak I just... I can't do this. I don't know how. And she knows. She knows exactly what she's trying to do to me. She only wants to take them because her new partner likes the fluffy one and because she spent money on a cat she specified at the time she'd brought home FOR ME, to help me cope when my girl passed on (especially because she made sure this new kitten would pick up some traits of the one who helped raise her). And this woman told me "hey, at least once you've got no cats you can finally [delete] yourself; you should be happy about that."
