To be fair not all politicians are corrupt, Bernie Sanders has shown himself to be very uncorrupt (I am not saying he's the only one, but he's the only one off hand that comes to mind that I trust and has the experience, popularity/name recognition, and good plans too) Voting for Bernie would also be a way to fight corruption. It's throwing the baby out with the bathwater when we say all are corrupt, we need to recognize great people like Bernie when they appear and give them maximum support. Think of how much push-back the democratic party has against Bernie, how hard they have made it for him, and see that as even more proof of his quality and honesty. But it won't matter what they say if enough of us vote for him, it may need to be over 50% with a rigged system, so let's get it done. Also support this anti-corruption thing too, (hopefully legit and not some kind of scam, not sure how to determine that) it has some very good stuff in it, We aren't limited to doing only one or the other.

We recently passed ranked choice voting in Maine. Then we had to fight to get it implemented even after it passed. Then we had sore losers challenging the counts. Definitely uphill but it’s done. 🙂 Because of this, our votes are starting to mean something in Maine. We all need to remember democracy works by individuals adding up. That is the entire basis of democracy. The “it’s only a drop in the bucket” argument is foolish and disempowered. The bucket is filled with drops. Period. We all need to put our drop in the bucket and stop thinking change is not possible because we can’t put a whole cup in the bucket. Once we solve that trifecta, many other solutions to other problems will be made much easier for us to deal with. The problem with AACA (and it's derivatives) is the corporate media (which now includes the social networking platforms). They control/spin what information is distributed to people. You can shut down the lobbyists, the campaign contributions etc., but the money is and will be directed into controlling the corporate media. You could make sure that every candidate doesn't receive a single dollar from anyone, but then who determines which voices get heard on the social media platforms, in the local (corporate owned) newspapers, and let's not even start with ABC/CBS/NBC/PBS/FNC/CNN/MSNBC/Washington Post/New York Times/Wall Street Journal/etc.. Also, I would support revolving door legislation but even that will be manipulated and cloaked in secrecy. It will only lengthen the pipeline between public service and the private sector. Heck, I could easily wait 10 years for a sweet gig after becoming famous via the corporate media. Until Americans decide to start seeking answers/views outside their corporate media troughs and social media echo chambers, they will be manipulated. Be careful, you CAN EASILY legislate the control/restriction of information in the name of fairness ($$$ restrictions, more power to the media), but you WILL NEVER BE ABLE to legislate away apathy and tribalism. Until people start to wake up, the only thing we have is FREE SPEECH. That's what people should be fighting for. We could easily throw out crooked politicians at the ballot box, but hey "that official" is on "my" team (Republican/Democrat), or maybe most of us just don't have a clue, and don't really care (how many people can even name one Senator from their state?).
@joseph_wei2 жыл бұрын
True. People don't really know their leaders, they know them through media, so who control media, control the system. What is "free & independent" media? The media owned by the rich, none poor or even upper middle class owns media. That is why liberal democracy is always controlled by wealth. Also the change they are proposing won't ban political donations, merely to give refund to people who make small donations, corporations always have more money, so it might help a little, but it is not really a solution.

Great video. It’s about time we are even talking about this. First step, end career politicians. Next step, recognize the six companies that control all of the corporate media outlets in the entire country. These six are the muscle behind corrupt government. The Democrats in the 60’s had a strategy to take over all of our forms of messaging. Look at Democrat run Hollywood, music and television. Look at the way ‘reporters’ report. All outlets say the same thing everyday, at the same time and the same words. It’s great we are addressing corruption in government, but you have to recognize the corrupt media also.

Got it here: archive.org/details/gilens_and_page_2014_-testing_theories_of_american_politics.doc TL:DR: “When the preferences of economic elites and the stands of organized interest groups are controlled for, the preferences of the average American appear to have only a minuscule, near-zero, statistically non-significant impact upon public policy.” The data used went back to 1981. What this means is shocking, but people have been conditioned since birth to believe they live in a 'representative democracy' which turns out to be a lie now. (It wasn't when I was a kid in the 70s.) The U.S. functions as a plutocracy because the only people who get what they vote for are the wealthy. Rich people - who control the media - still believe they live in a democracy because THEY still get what they vote for.

The individual level is the most dysfunctional. People look for reasons to throw in the towel and think there is nothing that can be done, or even worse: start infighting and finger pointing. Democracy isn’t for the feint of heart. It’s participatory. “We the people...” is how the Declaration of Independence starts. It doesn’t start with, “You politicians...”

@@saltwaterpurl Politicians teach "learned helplessness" by example. Anything they don't want to do is someone else's fault , too late or impossible right now. Wait for November. Then wait four more years. Meanwhile blame the voters. They are the only ones with power for change. Theoretical power that is.

The system is working as designed and working as intended. This is a dual circuit system : capitalism for the average citizens and socialism for the elites. The system is not broken.

Genuine question: are you calling for a national convention to amend the constitution, the threat of which represents the yellow line, or is it a critical mass that tends to lead to the federal government choosing to put it on the docket? I'm not sure that McConnell is in an anticorruption kinda decade you know?
