The neo-cons of the Bush era literally are the uni students from Foucault's Pendulum. Like they build a whole world view on a conspiratorial way of interpreting the past and finding hidden messages in Plato to early modern philosophy. And they project that interpretation onto the present and it bleeds into a insane conspiratorial ontology. At-least in Eco's book the protagonists are pretty innocuous, all they are doing is trying to summon ghosts due to a misreading of a 12th century monk's grocery list. Elliott Abrams and other neo-cons are murdering hundreds of thousands of Iraqis due to "hidden meanings" Strauss found in his reading of Xenophon. Like next level crazy.

This critique of Strauss is itself very Straussian. "People don't know how to govern themselves but neither do the elites... after all look at how a specific group of Straussian elites were responsible for the Iraq war."

I was taught political philosophy from a Straussian and was required to read some Strauss throughout undergrad. It made a bit of sense, his interpretations of things. I do agree with a lot of it. His idea of the esoteric makes sense, especially because he is not the one who came up with it. In fact, Islamic philosophers referred to Platonic writings as gold covered in a silver filigree. I also agree with his concept of the noble lie and the susceptibility of the public. Once again, these are ripped directly from Plato. And lastly, his identification of the core of western culture with Athens and Jerusalem seems to make a lot of sense. But this did not lead me to thinking an aristocracy is necessary, but that the state is built on lies and should be abolished. A misunderstanding I think, although I haven't read everything by him, is that he doesn't seem to be a nihilist. He critiques "historicists" or hyper relativists from the Nietzsche school because they are challenging the framework of western civilization. You touch on this some in the second half of the video. He seems to want to retain Greek ideas, like Nietzsche. So he seems to be a standard conservative, especially with his regard for Judaism and Buber

You know what the thing is; Most people ((Jordan Peterson is a prime example)) usually consider the translation of the old testament by king James or Martin Luther as THE law of moses and they consider Christian interpretations and commentaries of the old testament as THE meaning of the old testament. Just get a taste of the oral law i.e. Talmud, which is THE law of Hebrews and has presidency over written law, which almost every secular jew and most gentiles never read. You will get a hint of what lies behind "esotericism". They will persuade you that, no, you will misinterpret it or not understand it, because it takes a lifetime to understand its true meaning. But if you respect your intellect, give it a reading, a sincere unbiased reading and check for yourself.

@@saimbhat6243 The irony is that the OT/Septuagint, Torah included, are heavily influenced by surrounding mythology, religion, philosophy, and cult practices. There is zero evidence that people who worshiped "YHWH" were aware of the so-called "Torah" (the Laws *cough* Plato) before the Septuagint was written in the 3rd century bc. Zero mentions of Moses, Zero mentions of Noah, none, at all in the historical record before that. The Septuagint was an attempt to forge a history and establish authority for a particular "branch" of worshipers of YHWH, and they couldn't scrub their Greek influences well enough, it's all over the text. The KJV is based on the Masoretic text, translated into Hebrew and then into English in the 17th century. It's a joke to think the KJV is authoritative. It's a manipulation. The Septuagint and Greek NT make sense in historical context. The translations don't. What we think of "Judaism" wasn't even the most widespread brand of Yawehism until well after the Christians overthrew Rome. Today's monotheists are living a lie, and they use it to justify their own power.
