We got that with the marriage plot-line, from him deciding to launch a counterattack on a Yonko's ship regardless of Luffy's answer, him saving Nami and the others and sacrificing himself in Capone's body, then him fucking up Big Mom's plan just by genuinelly liking Pudding and finally cooking the ultimate cake that temporarily knocked out a Yonko so that they could escape. But yeah, Wano has been exclusively a disappointment for us Sanji fans, and it's been going on for years now

@@MarcoDToon I liked those moments that you mention, but they weren't even close to the Mr. Prince moment in Alabasta, the Archa Maxim in Skypia or the thing with the gates of justice in Ennies Lobby. Edit: Actually not, I almost like all those moments. I didn't like the cake plotline. The cake was supposed to stop Big Mom for more time, I ended the arc with the sensation that the cake plotline didn't have a payoff and that the gyojins made a lot more than Sanji.

Sanji's role on Sea train was glorious. Luffy and Zorro had their moments too. But Sanji walking into train compartments and destroying everyone one by one was epic.

Sanji never got as much public attention as Luffy and Zoro got. He was sleeping when Luffy and Zoro had their fight and trashed Mr.5. He also wasn't present during Little Garden for most of the time. He wasn't regarded as strong fighter by Bellamy unless Luffy and Zoro because he had not gotten a bounty at that time yet and also wasn't involved with Bellamy at all. He wasn't among the top 5 fighters left to face Enel in Skypia. And he wasnt regarded as a supernova and therefore his captains equal like Zoro. I and all other Sanjifans know this fact. But he was never disregarded by Oda like he has been since punk hazard. He was always considered the next strongest figher after Luffy and Zoro and was conisdered to be part of the monster trio by everyone, implying he was at least on a similar level. He would also often fight alongside Zoro to take the lead as the main fighters in Luffys absence, undermying his and Zoro's brotherly rivalry. He was the only one besides Zoro to be able to tank Kumas attack. He was fighting the pacifista alongside Luffy and Zoro as the main attack force. The thing is, he never actually fought as much in front of the public eye as much as Luffy and Zoro did and was therefore always disregarded by the public, including the Marines. But his position inside the strawhats was undisputed, he was always the number three. But even though he didn't get much attention in public he still had many awesome stealth missions. And that was exactly Sanji's appeal as a Character, he was the silent fighter who did the important fights and jobs outside everyone's awarness. Like the sea train fight you just mentioned. Or how he outsmarted Crocodile. That's what made him so great, he was like a spy and at times like a Ninja. Very strong, but nobody really knew that outside his Crew. Currently though, I am not sure were he stands. He still hasn't really gotten a major win. He still is kind of doing stealth missions with his raid suit. And he did face off against major fighers like Page one, X-Drake and even King. He was considered to be among the top 3 fighters by queen and was called a big shot by Black Maria. So I guess he is still considered one of the main fithers of the strawhat crew? Looking at the entire picutre, I guess he never really lost his position in the strawhat crew. Luffy always told everyone how strong Sanji is and many powerful fighers in Wano consider him a powerful figher as well. But I guess the thing that bothers us fans the most is that even after some absence of fighting like in Skypia, he always had some major wins under his belt to undermine his status. Even in Skypia he managed to beat Satori, so he at least got a win. And not long after that he had a tag team fight with Zoro against the Groggy Monsters which still depicted him as Zoro's rival and equal. In Water 7 he got the sea train scene and managed to beat jabura in Enies Lobby. But Punk Hazard marks the longest time without a major win for Sanji, which makes us Sanji Fans very impatient. I am kind of lost about were he currently stands within the group and wether he is still considered the third strongest fighter of the crew. Let's hope Oda will give him his time to finally shine again in Wano. Sorry for the long post

@@trulam5152 It isn't about how much he's been utilized, it's about the way in which he's been utilized. He has yet to go against a "third strongest" character, which is what fans came to expect from the pre-time-skip era. He's also yet to execute a big plan that pays off, like he used to do. Whole Cake was great for characterization, but like you said, Zoro has yet to be challenged, despite going up against "second strongest" characters post-time-skip. This makes Sanji seem a lot weaker in strength comparatively, which isn't what we came to expect from the earlier portrayal. Whether or not he's been utilized more than the other characters isn't the point of the video; it's whether he's been portrayed as strong and competent, which he hasn't really been.

If you go back and re read Punk Hazzard Sanji is the reason Kinemon accepts the SHs help and basically sets everything in motion, it was because of Sanji's kindness that Kinemon realized that not every pirate is like Kaido

Here's my thought about Sanji : after two years in hell during the timeskip, each arc gives him a taste of paradise. - Sabaody : witnessing the most beautiful woman in the One Piece world, Boa Hancock. - Fishmen Island : the mermaids. - Punk Hazard : sharing Nami's body. - Dressrosa : being literally in the country of love and passion. - Zou : garchu (rubbing up against women without really being a pervert). - Whole Cake Island : getting married to a pretty girl who will fall in love with him. - Wano : finally becoming invisible. Maybe I'm overthinking all this, but for Sanji it seems to be the path from a nightmare to a dream

Sanji is the most diverse character in the SH's in terms of the many ways Oda is able to utilize him. - He can be a powerhouse that takes on formidable opponents at the climax of an arc (Alabasta, Enies Lobby) - He can be the Ace that comes in clutch during crucial moments (Alabasta, Skypeia, Dressrosa) - He can be a strategist that concocts an ingenious plan to save the day (Enies Lobby) - He can be a nomad with a secret identity that goes on a tangent solo mission (Water 7, Lily Garden) - He can be a reliable leader to a subunit of the SH's (Zou) or even enemy marines (PH) - He can be a compassionate person that changes people or gains their trust (PH, Dressrosa, WCI) - He can be a skilled Chef that showcases his prowess (PH, WCI) - And of course, he can be a comedic relief (albeit Oda uses this wayyyy too much)

It's hilarious, but the Germa flashback gives more insight into Sanji's rage against Duval. A cry-baby with an iron mask begging him, Black Leg Sanji, to give him his life back, it's basically Vinsmoke Sanji who comes back to haunt him. "You are the only stain on my life, Sanji, the one thing that I am ashamed of." Just like little Sanji was to Judge, little Sanji is exactly what Black Leg Sanji tries to forget about himself.

If you think about it, Sanji hasn't had the time for a good moment. In Punk Hazard he was switched with Nami, in Dressrosa he had to hurry away to Zou, he was gone in Zou, and in Whole Cake he was a prisoner for 90% of it. Wano is the arc where shit is going to get as real in the New World as Enies Lobby was for the Grand Line. Sanjis got his new Raid Suit and has tested the capabilities. He's ready to kick major ass and embarrass his enemy greatly

honestly, i feel like out of all the straw hats, chopper is the one that oda doesnt know what to do with beside just being cute. he never really had a major 1v1 fight ever since enies lobby (the fight against hogback was soo short, interupted by oars , and was mostly just talking), and most of the time he is just being shown being scared of whatever is currently happening, or fixing up whoever is currently hurt, the most creative thing oda had done with chopper recently is the whole relationship with o-lin, espacially since he himself is extremley guillabe and a really bad liar, and after the most recent chapter, it looks like he still is planning to do something with that and not just discard it after big mom got her memories back

Your forgetting that he played a key part in WCI: it was him that planned and captured Brulee... which not only gave them a safe place in enemy territory... but gave them free rein to go anywhere in said territory (and he was the one who realized how important/powerful Brulee's power was before he did it). That was very very useful until the end of the assassination plot. Additionally he was the main person who saved the minks back in Zou... yes it was a group effort but he was the main drive of the effort due to the fact that he was a doctor and this was his field of knowledge.

There's a missed opportunity to showcase Franky and Usopp's work of smuggling ships and fixing them up. You know how Franky's dad is world famous for building the best ships!? Well Franky just casually built one hundred of the world's best ships and nobody blinked an eye. That's some major character development that's underexposed. Chopper is a similar story going to Wano and bringing his own knowledge to the people of Wano who are probably 5 centuries behind with medicine (the closed borders and war and all).

I disagree with the assertion that sanji's gag has been relegated to simply being a pervert with no cool moments. In post, i would argue that his 'cool' moments/wins have come with the women he's been idolizing and fawning over. In dressrosa he was able to win over Viola and in whole cake he was able to get Pudding to fall in love with him. These are minor but exrememly different than pre timeskip where his charming nature wasnt translated well to the women in the story and I would argue him winning the hearts of these women in one way or another is more satisfying for sanji's character than any big fight would have. Not to mention, these moments have big consequences over the narrative of each arc; Viola revealing her opposition to Doffy, and Pudding betraying Big Mom.

It's really annoying how people tend to forget certain aspects about pre timeskip and think it was flawless. Sanji's gag has always been frequent and just as much prevalent than in post. Even in Morj's examples for post having gag moments with no contrast, he simply left out the fact that they did. Before his gag with viola he had a badass/heroic portrayal and then it's flipped on it's head once he realizes she's falling for him. Same with pudding...and stealth black....and in zou...and even when he body swaps with nami. These complaints just fall under clear bias and laziness in evidence when it comes to that aspect and it's super common within the community

Personally, I believe a lot of cool Sanji moments have happened post-skip. I personally didn't care too much for Sanji until his humanity was really pushed to its limit in Whole Cake. Showing him eating dropped food because he hated wasting food, complimenting Pudding on a part of her she was ashamed of, and caring about his family that never cared for him were cooler moments in my eyes than him simply kicking ass and looking gentlemanly.

I have enjoyed Sanji more post timeskip, he has had good development with his relationship with Luffy and Nami and even lead half the crew for awhile. Now he has his family history a raid suit and new developments with connections to Big Mom. Meanwhile Zoro is the character that has really disappointed me the most since Fisherman island (minus the Monet moment). I really miss pre-time skip Zoro, Mihawk made him strong but drained him of his personality. I have been hoping Wano would be Zoro's arc but so far he is not as involved as I had originally hoped and it seems his backstory links to Wano is nothing more than a minor side plot (so far). In regards to characters Oda hates then that title goes to Chopper who did hardly anything in WCI

Sanji is my favourite but I have to admit Oda really does Sanji dirty by reducing him to his perverted side most of the time, post time skip. What made me like him is that he is kind when it really counts (how he treats Pudding/Viola etc) and how smart/strategic he is. I'd rather see that side of Sanji than him beating more enemies/perverted side. I also think it's so dumb that Sanji gets a lot of hate from the fanbase just because they want to see him win more fights and take less L's and obsess over power scaling. Sanji is awesome character! He has a lot of epic times when he comes in clutch to save the day and I love it about him. He is kind and emotional, inteligent and strategic. He would be amazing spy. Every time he fights it's really epic. Zoro is my most favourite strawhat (just to clear it Zoro is first, Usopp second and Sanji third) but usually my favourite fights are with Sanji (Sanji vs Jabra, Sanji vs Absalom etc.). As a fan of One Piece for more than a decade that has Sanji as his favorite character since the begining, I simply don't see the point of this hate. If I would have to guess, I think it comes from the portion of the fandom that loves powerscaling and "Tiers", analyzing One Piece World as Competitive Smash Bros or Pokemon, and that is most certainly not my cup of tea. I hate power scaling and i pretty much dislike sanji's overall character, like a lot of people. He has one of the best backstories but oda made him a literal simp that would put any woman over his crewmates dreams. He is the only one like that in the crew, that's why he gets hate. I don't give a damn about his gag, it's only a tad bit annoying. The problem is his core priorities and beliefs. Sanji is my favorite character because the dude has so much style the suits are so clean, his design over all is pretty slick. His fighting style is dope and he can be so smooth at times like when he defeated Jabra and said "Cooking is a gift from the gods. Spices are a gift from the devil. I think you've nailed the main issue- sadly with any long running series many characters can end up being a bad parody of themselves, with one character trait fixated upon and dialed up to max. After 25 years of a series as vibrant as OP, Oda is handling so many complex characters that to give everyone the same focus would make arcs never ending, so thoroughly explored characters can end up just doing "their thing" and not a great deal else, leaving fans feeling the character is not living up to their potential. I may be wrong about this, but I think that I and the majority of Sanji fans used to love his gag before it just became a general perversion (even through FMI tbh haha). It was fun, endearing and made a character who always wanted to seem so cool all the more lovable. His goofiness was even kind of respectable: his sauve, badass persona was never just to impress the ladies and he'd abandon his image in front of the other guys in a heartbeat. I'm certainly not saying being a gentleman used to be his sole motivation, but that has definitely been sidelined in favour of being more of a pervert.

Good point, i would go further than saying he was just sexually deprived. I think Sanji's 2 years during the time skip were extremely traumatizing to him. 2 years of isolation is one thing, but being endlessly pursued by okamas for a homophobe is psychological torture. Thus through his trauma Sanji has regressed in his. Yes it's ridiculous, but for a pervert it makes sense, and that Sanji comes back with psycholgical trauma so extreme that it often manifests physically is something that Sanji is struggling with silently. We are watching someone learning to walk after losing a leg, it's painful for everyone, but hopefully one day he will be able to move forward.

After watching your video it made me think about Sanji in Whole Cake and him coming in clutch to make the wedding cake to quell Big Moms anger. I believe this part exemplified Sanji’s true power which is cooking. One of the primary power ups during Sanji’s time on Okama island was learning their recopies to make better food to help his crew mates. Thus, I felt like that whole side quest by Sanji was pretty badass, especially since he was able to smell all the ingredients of the cake in a couple of whiffs. Sanji actually had a really badass clutch “Mr. Prince” moment when he got Cupcake to trust and join him to make the wedding cake to stop big moms rampage. Even though it wasn’t a traditional gnarly fight scene it showed how strong Sanji’s true power of cooking is.

I think it makes sense that Sanji gets in less fights, like you said he is less fighting obsessed, and with the ally crew getting ever larger theres less incentive for him to need to fight. For me a lot of Sanjis strongest moments have been emotional moments not badass moments. One of my favorite Sanji moments was when he saw Puddings third eye and his classic gag of being a badass then being a doofus infront of women was played as a real emotional moment rather than a gag and it was super fulfilling and fit so perfectly. Which made it really weird that he would go back to just perving around afterwards but hey whatcha gonna do, Sanji gon Sanji I guess.

This was a very interesting video for me. Sanji is probably my second favourite character in the series, I've always loved him and still do and I'm not bothered by the stuff you talked about in the first half of the video, but like you said it's the post-timeskip gags that really bring down his character for me. What I most love about Sanji is his kindness and I genuinely think that he's one of the kindest people in the OP world, but then have him act like an absolute ass sometimes is just...ugh. Like some stuff e.g the nosebleed was just obnoxious and annoying but then there's also stuff like immediately going to peep on the women in the bathhouse after he got the raid suit or when he got body swapped with Nami and kept touching her body even though Nami asked her not to do it. As a woman I just find that so distasteful and off-putting. I feel like this is borderline getting into the "sexism in One Piece" argument. (Btw I remember Morj mentioning in some livestream that he has thought about making a video about sexism in OP and just saying I'd totally be down for that) Anyway I still love Sanji, but god do I wish that Oda would treat him better sometimes.

I have the exact same sentiments. I had a discussion in reddit about why women felt that Sanji groping Nami was peak degenerate behavior but most people were just “it’s a joke, get over it” or “It’s fiction” or “One Piece was written for boys”. The worst was “Nami wasn’t offended! She was fine with being groped so you should be, too”. Like duh, Nami can’t even think for herself. She doesn’t have independent opinions since it’s still Oda-sensei’s thoughts that are conveyed in the manga. Sanji was originally my favorite character. Unlike Luffy and Zoro, who ultimately just want to become strong (I know there's more to it, but ultimately thats what it is), Sanji's dream is completely different. It's more innocent. Zoro wants to become the strongest and carry on the will of his dead childhood friend, and we see him fight lots of strong characters to achieve that goal.. Sanji on the other hand, feeds people when they are hungry, he leaves a lasting impression on the people he helps, his dream is a child's dream but thats the point. Sanji is a truly kind character. But instead of focusing on these wonderful traits, now we don't really see that from him and oda overplays the woman gag, which I already thought hurts his character. Its frustrating to see all the great potential not being utilized.

I was just re-reading One Piece, and I thought of something, Zoro and Luffy are similar because they both have insane final goals, Usopp and Luffy are similar because they both want to meet the Red Hair crew, Sanji and Luffy had a dynamic like that too. I wouldn't say his perversion was only a gag since the whole point of the okama island situation is that he was being chased in the way he chases women. The women he pines after are never shown to like it. All the straw hats face consequences for their immaturities/flaws.

If Mr. Morj held a class on one piece theorizing and analysis I'd be front row taking notes. Im so happy to see your channel go to new heights as we get closer and closer to the climatic conclusion of one piece. I have this nagging idea in the back of my head about starting sort of a "grand fleet" of one piece youtubers and influencers. Everyone working together on theorizing and analyzing different aspects of one piece and releasing epic discussion betweens the biggest names in one piece today maybe getting as much recognition as to communicate with Oda himself. With no one person fully in charge the opinions and views of things would vary and create an awesome viewers experience. And well if the platform is big enough(and combining the different youtubers fanbases would be massive to say the least) there would be no way we could go unnoticed. Ive had this idea for a while and at this point I just wanna see it done even if its not by my own doing.

Hey Morj, you could also make a follow up vídeo on the future of Sanji's character, maybe focusing on romance. I know Oda said that he wouldn't put romance in his mangá, but that was a long time ago and in my opinion with the whole Sanji and Pudding relationship he already broke that rule, in a sense. Since the timeskip, we also had that brief exchange with Viola, and Nami's reaction to Sanji's behavior in WCI, that was, to me, heartbroking. We've also had the first flashed out couple in One Piece in Oden and Toki's relation, so there is a precedent. I also know shipping is the no go zone of content in the fandom, but I truly believe that if we're gonna have an epilogue, the only couple that I certainly see being formed is the "Nami-san and Sanji-kun" duo. They have a special relationship between them and it could be a nice nod to a fan base that grew up, got married and had children while reading One Piece.

Of course it will never gonna be the focus of either character, but if I have to think of two examples from the top of my mind, Sanji had Nami in a Wedding Dress in his arms on Thriler Bark and then again, this time himself dressed as a Groom, in WCI. Oda is the master of foreshadowing, don't you forget.

Your more recent takes I worry reflect you being too dialed in on the OP social media reaction. The sheer thought that Oda hates Sanji is utterly ridiculous and only held by powerscaling Bros that cried when Opu got a hit in on Luffy/Zoro without taking in the greater narrative context. Sanji had a whole arc dedicated to his personal growth as a character, highlighting that indeed he is the world's greatest cook and also I need the most chivalrous man in the OP universe. So he didn't have a 'fight' in whole cake, he did allow the alliance to escape by rescuing his family, swooning Pudding and of course baking the cake. All three were needed and all three highlighted a different virtuous personalitiy trait of his. He also got a power up in stealth black, that also coincided with his gag dream of being invisible. At this point you could make more of an argument that Oda doesn't know what to do with Robin or Zoro as neither have had much screen time nor been tested as a character post time skip.

@@Kanemakii exactly, it just surprised me given both his Whole Cake Island video explicitly call this fact out. Also if we have to talk about feats and shoen portrail, he had some great moments dodging a 1st commander who can see the future (haki),, kicking a massive cake into the air w/o damaging it (strength), and blitzing oven so fast/hard oven didn't even see him. For iconic rescues/panels, Sanji standing on the table and using raw emotions (his strength, the one thing that separates him from his family, his lasting legacy from his mom and why he loves women so much) melts a rival devil fruit users ability to free them. That scene is iconic and nearly the panel of WCI.

I know that the video came out 4 months ago but I just discovered your chanel (which I already felt in love with) and I really wanted to share my thoughs about Sanji since he was (and even with this hard time, still is) my favorite Straw hat ! I am personally a big fan of Sanji since he's introduction at the Baratie arc, therefore I totally agree with you about the differences we see between pre and post timeskip. Moreover, I also agree about the deception I felt when seeing him as a total pervert in fishman island and the new world in general (even if I really liked how he taked responsiblity of the crew between Dressrosa and Zo and the moment when he ask luffy permission to confront the Big Mom's pirate is one my fav). When I read Whole Cake Island I was completly fan of what it showed us about Sanji character : what it highlighted, he's childhood and even he's relation with pudding (the panel of his reaction about the truth about pudding under the rain is one of my fav pannel of all One piece and btw I'm a supporter of the theory that they have completed their wedding vows when Pudding kissed him) ! I really loved the arc and I really saw it as the come back of Sanji. What really disapointed me in Wano is that I was waiting to see the consequence of WCI, an evolution of Sanji in a less perverted, less "petticoat" way after the whole pudding story arc. But then we all saw the bath scene... (sorry if I made a mistake or if my paragraph is rough and messy, English is not my native language :/ )

Been binge watching your videos recently. They're all good by the way, I just wanted to comment specifically on this one because your comments about the contrast in Sanji's gag made me realize why I like his portrayal in the Whole Cake Island arc the most post TS (besides the obvious that it's his arc)- it didn't need to rely on the post TS gag nearly as much. We got to see Sanji maintain composure around Pudding a lot post wedding with a couple cool feats and character moments, and while his interactions with Pudding initially fell into the gag, the gag was reversed post wedding, with Pudding showing these high contrast reactions to Sanji's presence and we see Sanji as the catalyst for the gag moments. Plus, more importantly than the gag between the two of them, I think there was a (for lack of better word) neat juxtaposition/interaction with them - the normally silly Sanji going crazy over any girl was able to sincerely portray his admiration (at least it seemed sincere/genuine) to someone who was/felt forced to adapt her looks and mannerisms out of a deeply held body image issue.

Oda doesn't hate any strawhat, its just that he gives most of the shine to Luffy/Zoro/Nami because he thinks of only them as the main characters(In SBS) and he also called them the 3 triggera of one piece since they are the only 3 in his one shots.

probably an old sbs i guess ? dont remember reading that, but i think that is not true anymore ...like sanji had a whole arc based on his past and elbaf will be an arc focus on usopp, robin is very important for the main stroy, idk if chopper,franky and brook will have another arc focus on them(apart from where we met them), but they had and will have shine moments. So idk only the 3?mmm and he sometimes focus more on other characers than the strawhats ...and nami didnt appear in dressrosa and zoro didnt appear in whole cake so... The only main character is luffy , simple my opinion

I think Sanji isn't even the most disregarded straw hat, that's Chopper. Chopper is the only straw hat who feels like his character development reversed over the timeskip, and he's had precious few moments to shine, and his interesting power ended up being sanded down by removing all of the downsides and giving him an all-purpose form that just makes him mediocre at everything rather than specialising like he did pre-timeskip. His current state is just sad honestly, and he went from my 4th favourite SH pre-timeskip to dead last after it.

Sanji is my favorite Strawhat, and I appreciate the videos you've made about it. I really miss the mr Price like moments, I feel like we haven't had anything like it for a while and now might be a perfect moment. I do think Oda likes him a lot (WCI and his mr prince moments are proof enough for me) but he also seems to like to make the poor guy suffer. And yeah, your description of the stupid pervy gag was on point, I remember at the start it didn't bother me much because more than a pervert, he was infatuated with women and was mostly respectful toward them. The Absalom joke bothered me back then, as a woman I felt kinda uncomfortable. And then on Fishman Island, they turned it literally into a plot point and I didn't love that. Like the boy might be a cook but he thirsty all the time now, I'll just cross my fingers and hope that we get a cool moment soon. I do think some of his best moments when interacting with women have been post timeskip: Viola, Pudding, Nami, Cosette (I think that was her name? cook girl), and even his more parent/older brother type relationship with Toko or Carrot. Like, a lot of these are great whenever Oda focuses a bit more on their actual relationships beyond the initial gag. I sadly think a lot of people dismiss Sanji or dislike him because of the gag, and as a result they overlook the great things about him so I do hope Oda tones it down a bit here and there...
