I am absolutely stunned by the level of ignorance in the comments here from people defending incest and cousin marriage. A little biology lesson for you: what causes genetic disorders, low IQs and stillbirths is a lack of genetic diversity - meaning, a child inherits DNA from both mother and father. A child is healthy when the chromosomes from their father are different from the chromosomes from their mother. When a child inherits matching chromosomes from mother and father, THAT'S what leads to genetic disorders, low IQ's, poor immune systems etc... In a population of billions there's always going to be a small number of couples who, through sheer bad luck, happen to have similar DNA even though they're not related. That's what happens when normal, non-incestuous couples have children with these disorders. It's the lack of genetic diversity that causes the problem, not specifically incest. However, when a couple is incestuous, lack of genetic diversity is guaranteed - the parents are both related, so they already share a lot of the same chromosomes by default. THAT'S why having children with first cousins increases the risk of these disorders, and why pointing at non-incestuous couples whose children have these disorders is an absolutely retarded defense. MARRYING YOUR FIRST COUSIN IS A BAD MOVE, PEOPLE! ACCEPT IT!
@cassiesmum5 жыл бұрын

@mxhsvn_b78665 жыл бұрын
@@cassiesmum that's your perspective. Not everyone is raised the same way. Some people actually chose to marry their cousins so clearly not all cousin marriages are forced. You might find it disgusting because that's how you were brought up. Other people don't. Plus the potential risks aren't that high. People portray it as being extremely dangerous however it's only a game of chance. What if there isn't any disease in the family at all? What if there is but only one of the two cousins inherited or carries it? I could go on forever. Cousin marriages have the same risks as any other unrelated marriage, only the percentage is *slightly* higher. People often imagine them as creating some new deadly diseases which isn't true. I agree on your emotional relationship with them but that doesn't mean that they are physically siblings as well. What if those cousins aren't raised together would they still have the same feelings as you mentioned? On average first cousins only share 12.5% of their DNA, and trust me that's not a lot. We think we are very closely related to them but we aren't. Therefore the risk is only raised to 2-3%. That's probably the same as me choosing to drink a glass of water or a glass of coke. Coke maybe unhealthier but what huge difference would it make compared to the glass of water.
@EmergencyButtons5 жыл бұрын
Mohsin Bokhari the problem is when 1st cousin marriage is accepted, encouraged and then becomes the norm it happens over multiple generations, bringing the 12.5% to a much much much higher figure. These are more than 1st cousins who are marrying. These are individuals that were also parented by cousins. And often they are double cousins, sharing all the same grandparents and genetically equivalent to half siblings. Sibling, double cousin and first cousin incest will rarely be a problem in the first few generations. It’s true, they will se only slightly more obvious genetic effects from this. But after several generations, as in many Muslim and Arab communities that have done this for 100’s of years, you will get devastating effects. It’s so sad that all the suffering, disability and death of the innocent children resulting in these marriages are seen as acceptable consequences.
@EmergencyButtons5 жыл бұрын
Mohsin Bokhari whenever you have marriage between family members it will create multiple familial relationships between individuals. For example if first cousins marry then their kids will be siblings but also second cousins to each other. Mathematically you can even add the 50% to the 12.5% and say they share 62.5% of their DNA now. So when the kids of those kids marry as first cousins they are really more than first cousins. They are also 3rd and fourth cousins, and the genetic relatedness is all additive when looking at the DNA. SO THESE “FIRST COUSIN MARRIAGES” WILL APPROACH THE EQUIVALENCE OF TWIN MARRIAGE AFTER SEVERAL GENERATIONS. PERHAPS EVEN WORSE THEN TWINCEST DEPENDING ON THE RECESSIVES IN THAT FAMILY. It’s the genetic equivalent of raising a family in a massive nuclear fallout.
@mxhsvn_b78665 жыл бұрын
@@EmergencyButtons that doesn't mean that the option is completely labelled as incest. Having a decent sugar is not entirely bad, however if I'm having at least a bag of sugar everyday, I'm bound to get a get serious problems such as diabetes, heart related issues etc. Similary, if cousins marry for 2-3 generations it's fine. But knowing that it could be potentially harmful in the future, one shouldn't continue to take place. It should be left as another option, not something encouraged or discouraged. I can't believe there are people out there labelling second and third cousin marriage as incest as well. As I mentioned, its about chances. There may not be any issues in the family at all then why discourage it if everyone including the two individuals are willing.

These children who are born defective with down syndrome, fragile x, microcephaly are in fact victims of their parents irresponsible choices and its a crime against your own future children not to give hem the best chance. As disabled people, they may suffer pain of many surgeries, they may never be productive members of society, they experience social stigma, loneliness, alienation. Its a crime against society, they may burden the taxpayer who fund the educational system and the socialized medical system who does all this amniocentesis and abortions of the defective babies. Today as well in marriages in hindu caste of boy and girl must be different along with that cast of maternal mother and faternal mother must also be different then only marriagr can take place. Example Girl and his both parents are of cast A Boy and his both parents are of cast B Girls grandmother is of cast C (before her marriage) Boys grandmother is of cast D (before her marriage) Then all A, B, C, D castes must be different for a marriage to occur thus family lineage is preserved. Cousins are definitely not the same as a sister or brother, so there's nothing illegal or immoral about marrying a cousin. The only issue with it is the danger of genetic disorders appearing in their children. So it's better to be on the safe side and not marry a cousin. The risk is even greater if the family has 'generations and generations' of cousin marriages in their genealogy. In breeding depression will have happened and so there will definitely be more recessive genes lurking.

There is always a chance of genetic conditions showing up. It is reduced if you marry outside of your family. Genetic testing and counselling can reduce instances of children being affected as potential parents who undergo it may then choose not to have children. Just because non-consanguinous marriages can produce affected children it does not mean cousin marriages are safer: the risk is demonstrably higher in communities where cousin marriages occur: the main population in the UK that practice cousin marriages is Pakistanis, 1.3%of the population, yet represent 30% of all affected children born in the UK. The link is clear, and scientific fact dies not care about cultural issues.

I wouldn't marry any of my cousins (1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th) and I come from a very big family but if others want to do it, that's their business. Just as I am in favor of if a man wants to marry a man or woman wants to marry a woman or if someone wants to change their gender/sexual identity or if people want to crossdress. Consenting adults should be left to make their own decisions about these personal matters. And I find the argument that democracy is more prevalent in societies that don't allow or encourage marriage between cousins a specious and dubious one. Also, there are medical and sociological research papers (in peer reviewed scientific journals) that push back against the centuries old claims that cousins marrying each other leads to physical and mental disabilities/illnesses in their offspring. Many that push the theory that cousins marrying leads to illnesses/diseases in their offspring lean too heavy on correlation equals causation, far too often cherry pick their findings and only count the hits (that support their biases/already held positions) and not the misses (that don't). Much of the taboo surrounding cousin marriages comes from the mid/2nd half of the 19th century (particularly in the United States) when it became synonymous with poverty, backwardness, people who lived in rural areas and primitivism (associated with the influx of immigrants from Europe particularly southern Europe who were looked down upon); and there was a large movement in the states after the Civil War for greater government involvement in a variety of areas like education, health and safety. It is interesting that at this same time in England marriage between cousins was not outlawed (as it was/is in the states) because it's associated with the aristocracy/landed gentry and upper middle class, whose values & practices were/are seen as above reproach and the ultimate expression of civilization.

Yes. But that is why we try to prevent STDs. Government and the NHS should seek to prevent things and behaviours which damage people and society.

The fact basically is that marrying your cousins over multiple generations is the bad part. If you marry a cousin once and there is no hereditary disease in either of your DNA then how on earth would your child have any issue?

There’s really nothing wrong with marrying a cousin , eg 3rd cousin or more distant . The problem only comes with the cousins are too close eg 1st cousins.

i dont see how this is incestuous, i have never seen my cousins. if i were to marry one then how is that any different from another marriage? even if u lived close by, people marry people they have known since childhood, so what? you're not siblings. having said that i wouldnt marry a cousin out of biological reasons, last thing i want is a hereditary disease in the family.

Cousin marriages were quite common in the US up until the mid twentieth century. This is nothing new. For some cousins and/or consanguineous couples, perhaps it should be discouraged. The reason why consanguineous marriage is strongly discouraged or stigmatized presently, is because many public interests groups are placing value judgments between consanguineous relationships and same-sex relationships. Many people in western countries seem to support the rights of same-sex couples, however, when the topic of consanguineous couples comes up, ironically, it's not uncommon for Marriage Equality supporters to ridicule people who may practice and/or may be in support of consanguineous marriage between consenting people. Often, they use a lot of of myths, misconceptions, and express personal disgust to oppose it. This is the 21rst century! If a consanguineous couple has concerns should they consider having children, there are medical professionals available to determine the safety. If consenting adults want to live together, marry and start a family together, it should be a a civil matter and not a criminal matter.
