Ralph McTell cover
Like many songs I play, I was introduced to this one by @fretkillrlives. Interestingly, it was a misheard lyric that I resonated with most, which I've folded back into the final refrain (see if you can spot it).
In researching the song I found an interview with Mr. McTell where he described living in Paris and watching the lives of the unfortunate unfolding on the streets. When he wrote the song he translated it to his native London where he had witnessed similar people in similar circumstances. As I reflected on this seemingly universal urban experience, I realized that I've lived in places that could relate to this as well. So I located the second verse and chorus on the streets of Paris as a nod to Mr. McTell and the song's provenance, while placing the third verse in Seattle where I went to college and bumbled through the transition to adulthood, and the final verse in Duluth, MN near where I grew up and where I now live. However, the old man at the all-night café still drinks tea. 😉
