As a gay dancer, I’ve been dying to see same sex couples dancing anywhere and this is vindicating as hell to watch. I’m a female lead with a female follow and straight couple dancing doesn’t connect with me while same sex couples are electric by comparison. If that’s what straight people feel watching regular paired dancers, then I can’t help but feel like I’m missing out for that lack of representation. So more, more on Strictly and off, from televised competitions down to local dance halls because I now realize that this lack identifiable representation means I’m missing out on that extra level of joy that comes from being able to feel the dancers emotions as a peer.

Personally I would love to see that but I bet if they did they would make it so they went out really quickly so they didn’t have it on air for too long. The title strikes me as just a tad misleading, since it wasn't a purely same-sex routine all the way through. I really want to see the show (and DWTS) actually have same-sex couples compete as the Austrian, Israeli, Ukrainian, and most recently, Italian versions have done (in fact, the male/male pair on the Italian version was so popular that they even made the finals -- the first same-sex pairing ever to do so on ANY version of Strictly!).

I'm a tad conflicted. I'm all for same sex pairings but I'd be afraid people would be voting for them more for the same sex aspect than the dancing, giving them an unfair advantage over the other pairs in that sense. Otherwise I'd live to see what kind of routines would be performed.

Why though, why can’t something be just for one thing that’s how the dances were traditionally made for. There is no reason why same sex couples shouldn’t be allowed to do these things, but I think it’s the harmony between the body shapes which makes the dances make more sense. I think people are misunderstanding the reason as to why the same-sex partnership is such a big deal. In the dance world, a lot of the time in competitive dance, couples are same-sex. For the main factor that in daily life, there is a larger scale of females to males who dance. I have been a competitive dancer for 16 years and can say that out of the 5 partners i have had, only two have been male. During the times I had male partners, I found at competitions, people paid more attention as it was something foreign and not really seen. However, we are taught that double routines are usually portrayed with one person of each sex. For a show like Strictly to portray same-sex couples to the nation is also a way of helping the idea in the competitive area that same sex partnership is just as interesting as the standard dual sex.

That was one of my favourite professional dance routines in a while. Such a sexually charged, powerful routine. Great lighting, costumes, props, staging and song. Great dance, but title is a little misleading. There was a pro dance back in season 8 where they did the Paso, this seemed more along those lines to be honest. Not faulting the routine at all, it really is a great dance, put not entirely sure I'd say it was the first ever same sex dance on the show... now if they could do a same sex pair doing a tango or something, that would be amazing to watch!

Physical strength is only one element they would be judged on and doesn't necessarily come into all dance routines. The couple will also be judged on the preciseness of their footwork, the technical execution, the story-telling, the musicality, etc.

From rewatching this a few times, and a majority of AJ's dances with Lauren, it almost seems to me like he got on better while dancing with Gorka than he did with Lauren. Okay, true, Lauren is not a professional like Gorka but there was something about the way AJ and Gorka danced that was really phenomenal. A chemistry, almost. But I'm no dance professional so take my opinion with a grain of salt. However, I would really love to see a dance more centred around the both of them, the way Strictly does with some of the pro couples.
