Beautiful footage. It looks like a fairies' paradise in a children's book, or perhaps something out of Tolkien's Middle Earth, but it's deceptively calm. A width of thirty feet narrows abruptly into about three feet, with the river 'turning on its side' and undercutting the banks, and the depth can't even be measured due to the current's speed in that section of the river. And all the fatalities...

Since the volume of water is the same coming out as going in and there are no steap waterfalls; that means that a 30 foot wide and 6 foot deep river is pouring through a 6 foot wide, 30 foot deep channel that is swift, undercut, and stained with peat. Furthermore it's aerated by the turbulance and you sink like a stone in bubbly water. If you fell in with your clothes and shoes on you would be dead.
@iang-lb7nx
@iang-lb7nx 4 жыл бұрын
@@meptune no you're wrong. If it's 30ftdeep it cant be massively undercut. The river upstream is 30ft wide but relatively shallow so if turn on it's side it cant be undercut if 30ft deep.

Something nobody seems to be able to answer: how *deep* is the actual narrow water just above the waterfall itself? I'm referring to that part at 2:13. Everybody talks about a 30 foot wide river 6 feet deep turning into just 5-6 feet wide. Well, there's a little boulder sitting right there on the edge of the waterfall. What is it sitting on if that's 20-30 feet deep pouring over? If it isn't 20-30 feet deep pouring over (both above and under the water), which it would have to be in such a scenario because the water has to go somewhere....why does it look like only about 2 feet deep water going over the waterfall itself?

Very evocative, also: ... This striding-place is called THE STRID, A name which it took of yore: A thousand years hath it borne that name, And shall a thousand more. And hither is young Romilly come, And what may now forbid That he, perhaps for the hundredth time, Shall bound across THE STRID? He sprang in glee,--for what cared he That the river was strong, and the rocks were steep?-- But the greyhound in the leash hung back, And checked him in his leap. The Boy is in the arms of Wharf, And strangled by a merciless force; For never more was young Romilly seen Till he rose a lifeless corse. ... Is 'Strid' just a topographical name of the Wharfe or does it have a more general meaning?
@StephenGarnett
@StephenGarnett 6 жыл бұрын
ingenear I think it's a term derived from 'stride', as The Strid looks safe enough and narrow enough to just stride over!

I would love it if they could divert the river so the Strid would be a dry river bed, that is the only way I would go near the darn thing and I live not far away. It terrifies me. I wonder if that’s how you get to middle earth? I live very close to a river that every year claims lives at “beauty spots”, I wouldn’t swim in there if you paid me. Quite a few years ago two lads that were canoeing both drowned, they were in canoes within sight of the banks and people watching! I’ll only go to places like this when I can breath underwater.

Don't you realize that the water is black because of how deep it is? Yet no one knows. If you fall in there's literally no chance you will survive. The current will pull you down, God knows how far, while grinding you against rocks. There's no little bottom either. The rocks at the surface is just an overhang. Nothing but depth below that. If you died, your corpse may not even resurface.

I'd love to see someone chuck a frozen chicken or a pig carcass or something like that in there. And also attach a go pro to it with some lights on it as well. The mystery is such an allurement!!!! If it wasn't for my stupid lungs needing air, i'd totally put on full motorcycle gear and jump in just to see for myself!!!

It would probably end up getting stuck on a rock somewhere underwater. The Strid seems to just trap things that fall into it. It's like a tangled labyrinth of rocks below the surface.

TWrecks no flying out of the strid mate, even if it didn't short out. I'm willing to bet the currents would pull it right under and the rocks would tear it to pieces. That is the deadliest stretch of river on the planet.
