They are shouting “stroke,” like how a rowing team strokes the oars in the water. Billy wrote this as a diatribe against his former business manager. About how his manager would “stroke” (flatter) him, and then stab him in the back.

Billy Squier was fking HUGE back in the day. As a teen in the early-mid '80's you'd hear this song at every party, every school dance, every visit to the arcade and skating rink. FYI This entire album has so many good songs, its one of the few albums you can put it on and leave it until the end. "My kind of LOver". "In The DarK", "The Stroke", "Everybody Wants You" all worthwhile tunes.

@@lisaw5604 I have to agree with you Lisa W. Almost all of the sounds that are to come in the New Wave era are based on some song off The Cars debut album, except The Cars did it better. Little known fact, The Cars lost Best New Artist to Taste of Honey for the song "Boogie Oogie Oogie". AC/DC, unfortunately, became an Anthem Rock band in the 80's. Bon Scott rules, Brian Johnson drools.

In 1981, my friend and I saw Pat Benatar in concert. The opening act was a band my friend and I never heard of...until they played "The Stroke". We looked at each other and said "Oh, THEY'RE the ones that do this song?" It was a brand-new song on the radio at the time. Later that year, I saw Foreigner in concert. Billy Squier was the opening act but by then, I knew every single song. The same thing happened in 1986 when I saw AC/DC. I never heard of the opening band until they played a brand-new hit song at the time called "Runaway". The band was Bon Jovi.

I believe the "STROKE! STOKE! STROKE!" portion of the song was put in there for the sole purpose of fan participation when played live. Remember, there were no cell phones and part of the experience of a concert was to interact with the band. So, while it is a bit annoying and yes, a solo would make the song better overall, that chant really did add to the live experience. "That being said", another solid song review. Well done boys!

I saw Billy Squier live in 1981 in Germany as opening act for Whitesnake. Billy Squier played that song too.

"Breakdown" is essential. Studio version & then watch a live performance of... Petty was an artist to the core. RIP (Love Neil Young as well.)

@@lisaw5604 Tom Petty was so good live it's not even funny. Seen them three times!! One of those rare bands of sound better live than on their album. I mean much better!!

I have to say my fav is Lonely Is The Night, but In The Dark and My Kind of Lover off this album are also bangers. So is Everybody Wants You. R.I.P. Jeff Golub, the other guitar player besides Billy Squire. If you watch the contemporary videos for the songs off this album, or live clips from the tour, you'll see him with his black Les Paul to Billy's left (house right).

Dude - that "Stroke" shout is Billy Squier's "We Will Rock You". It's the audience participation part of the tune. You guys didn't grow up shouting "Stroke!" with the whole student body at all the dances. You don't remember everybody doing it drunk off our teenage asses at a party. I saw Billy live at Veteran's Memorial Coliseum in 1983, and he blew the roof off the joint, but the best part was this big dumb singalong when everybody got to be in the band. I still turn it up and sing with it every time it comes on. Love this song.

I've heard he played most, if not all instruments on his tracks. I'd suggest " Lonely is the Night" great guitar riff..Seen his show years ago.. sounded just like the recording 🤘

The stroke stroke stroke part is emulating the cadence a coxswain yells in competitive rowing which is literally “stroke, stroke, stroke, stroke” to keep rowers in unison. “ In the Dark”is a phenomenal song. Dude put out some great albums!

We used to play this song over the P.A. system at outdoor summer swim meets when it first came out in 1981. Sure, the lyrics were kinda dirty, but the adults didn't complain. LOL. When they are repeating, "Stroke. Stroke," it reminds me of a rowing/crew team and someone yelling, "Stroke, Stroke" so everyone would be maneuvering the oars at the same time. :-)
