I think Nick made some comment about Julians solo album and when recording the next strokes album, Julian didn’t want to see any of the band members a whole lot. And things were rough until like 2015.
@elidiabbots44954 жыл бұрын
Vespa Reptilia During Angles they all sort of fell out, which started when they toured for first impressions (i’m assuming) because Julian talked a lot about a tour being “a good way to break up a band”. Anyway, and then during Angles Julian sort of did his own thing for the most part, recording his parts separately from the rest of the guys. Then Nick apparently tried to get some songs they discarded from Angles to use for his solo work, and Julian especially got really pissed off. The falling out was mostly between Nick and Julian, and then the rest of the guys sort of grew apart from him because of that from what I can tell. It seems that after a “falling out” these guys just stop the strokes temporarily and go off to experiment with their own thing. If you look at the “making of angles” videos you’ll see that fab, nikolai and albert especially seem connected, and nick too. I don’t want to blame it all on Julian because it was definitely a collective effort, a whole band doesn’t go on a hiatus over one person or thing, so I’m assuming it was a conjunction of different shit going on and then touring that caused friction between them. Wouldn’t say they hated each other though.

They've had creative differences which eroded the friendship for a few years but now it's all good. 2: You should check out Virtue, by The Voidz! The Voidz is Julian's other band, a bit more experimental and in that record you have an amazing blend of genres and a wide variety of "modes" of singing as you called it. Also have you checked out the lyrics to Ode to the Mets? They're quite powerful. Cheers and have a nice quarantine!

Great review. Huge strokes fan and grew up with their music. You have to understand the strokes know how they are perceived and that’s the joke. They are so talented and precise. The only band I’ve ever seen start and finish a show stood in the exact same spot however so tight and fucking loud!! Julian incredibly insecure guy who’s commitment to becoming a better singer is something as fans we have to admire and congratulate. Bare in mind he writes all their songs. Go back through the first three albums. He is responsible for CLASSICS. Not being a fan boy here but to not get the strokes is not be in on the joke that they always have been a serious serious rock band. Remember when the rock world never took Robert P seriously and called him a arrogant pretty boy? Like fine wine it takes time baaaaby. Anyway peace and love everyone. Enjoy the album. X

The strokes 1st and 2nd album came out right before I "died" and the next albums I didn't really catch on to, but I really liked the first two. I heard this new album and it's the purity of their sound but so much more sophisticated, I hear some influences popping up that I never heard before (I heard New Order and Pink Floyd for sure), the singing is so good, this album is such an achievement I think, and they're also launching this album successfully in an age where we've moved beyond albums. I started writing this while I listened and you just mentioned the New Order guitar work! I think we're on the same wavelength musically, subbed and hit the bell.

Yeah man good review. One thing I would add is Casablancas certainly didn’t switch from “poser” to nice guy in one day. I think Angles was a foundational record in terms of how this one turned out eventually as an artistic statement. But also his work with The Voidz really defined him in the past 10 years. Both Voidz records are quite well done, daring, and skillful in covering a breadth of emotional musical states.

@9:44. He's been doing it with his solo work alot! I urge you to listen to Tyranny, an album he made with a new band called The Voidz. I think what's interesting about The New Abnormal is how everyone brings in their influences from their solo work into this. But with The Strokes, you are right. The past two albums weren't as good as one would like (though still very close to my heart). This record feels like everyone put their heart into and Julian especially.

The strokes are still killing it, 20 years later. I also fell in love with their second album before any other album. The first four tracks on Room on Fire are still my favorite. TL;DR - didn't give Kings of Leon the time of day till I worked at a café, and now I admire their work a whole lot. ------------------------------------------------ Reminds me of what I used to think about Kings of Leon. I didn't give them the time of day, had preconceived views about them; like, why listen to them, they're wack. Then I worked at a café, where the manager was a huge fan, and I listened to their entire discography as it was played over the speakers. I was so wrong. They're solid. The singer has a unique voice for this fusion of rock and southern feel. They have a progression that I believe peaked in their "Come Around, Sundown" album, my favorite by them. But their best was "Because of the Times". Just listen to Knocked Up, Fans, and Arizona in that album. They are songs with simple, complimentary layers that give you a space to explore and breath, especially in Knocked Up. If you want just a one off song to judge them yourself, listen to Cold Desert, from their "Only By the Night" album. The song is reminiscent of Purple Rain's (the song) construction or birth, where they had an idea of the song (only a couple lyrics) and just recorded a single attempt to it, adding lyrics spontaneously, no tape-backs, and it went on the record. Their time with U2 definitely helped them achieve the sound they were going for at the time. After Come Around..., it's been up and down, but they had songs that were and charted, surprisingly. If you have a negative view of a band or group, without even having listened to a couple songs by them, well, give them an actual listen. It'll help you find what you like and dislike, not just in bands/groups, but in sounds altogether.
@torchlightlms4 жыл бұрын
You are so right on target here except Ode. Give it a few more listens, as I think it's a grower. Julian belting out that beautiful melody near the end of the song is just haunting and a perfect ending to the album.

As a massive Strokes fan (but also an ardent Stones fan) I got kind of TRIGGERED by that title lol...only to then reread it & actually ''get'' what you were saying. Yeah, 20 years in The Strokes are just as good as they once were (if not better) and The Stones' Emotional Rescue isn't a particular favourite of mine either lol. That being said, ''true'' Stones fans would know it was all Jagger's (Brenda's) fault lol. Keith came up with two pretty rad solo albums at the time, so that goes to show they hadn't run out of ''steam'' just yet. I'm just saying that ''for the record'', you know. And in case any Stones fanatics (such as myself) stumble upon this comment. Otherwise, I really dug your review & never got the Strokes hate myself. I fucking love the Strokes. Seems like the only people who did actually disdain them were pretentious geeks that never really dug music for its own sake, but were into certain trends/bands (or pretended to be into 'em...) in order to feel better about themselves. That being said, though, I think The Strokes = rock n roll. In the same sense in which The Stones = rock n roll. As in they aren't and never really were ''mainstream''...or at least not to the same sort of extent that bands like Green Day or 21 Pilots were/are ''mainstream''. I respect your opinion, naturally, but...and maybe it's 'cause I'm 25 myself lol and I'm already being a bitter curmudgeon, but I can't just can't get into 21 Pilots at all - or most modern bands for that matter. Why? Well, because imho production-wise, they're as bland as you could possibly get. They're pop. They ain't rock n roll. Also, I remember playing The Strokes to my dad and he dug 'em almost instantaneously. So, what I'm trying to say is I kind of disagree about the ''bitterness'' aspect of it all - my dad got me into the Stones & I got him into The Strokes. I just think people dig good shit when they stumble upon it (according to their own taste ofc!) & disregard the rest. And The Strokes are friggin' fantastic. And so are The Stones. tl;dr Otherwise, proper review!

Hey professor skye! Just came here after watching your OGWAU review to say that Ode to the Mets is one of the best songs ever made. Have a nice day!

Nicely done Skye! I see why more people are connecting with you! And good points about New Order, another solid band. And also love how Toby barked at the exact time when you said, "I'm so hungry."

Fantastic review! Thank you! It makes me want to relisten to the album. I bought it because well I have loved the first couple of albums. Funny and insightful and self-effacing as ever. I thought my favorite track on this album was the adults are talking, just because of the way the whole guitars and sounds fit so beautifully together but also relistening I love Brooklyn Bridge to Chorus, Selfless and At the door about as much. Now to listen to it all as an album again.

In “Not the same anymore”, the way Julian pronounces “door” reminds me Rick Dalton when is singing the green door in once upon a time in Hollywood

Alejo Azul ehhhhh, I really don’t find it as airtight as their first two albums. I just find that it really drags out halfway through and to the end. Just my opinion, of course.

Professor Skye, really enjoyed this. An unpretentious, very honest assessment of the record. In my opinion, 'Bad Decisions' owes more to the song 'Melt with You' than anything New Order did, along with the obvious Billy Idol homage/melody borrowing. Also, you seem to be a big fan of 80s music in general, so I was surprised that you kind of just skimmed over 'Eternal Summer' without noting it borrows the chorus from the Psychedelic Furs' 'Ghost in You'. Like Idol gets a writing credit for 'Decisions' I read that Butler gets a credit for 'Summer.' As far as amalgamation of inspiration points, the verses in that song remind me strikingly of Wall-era Pink Floyd. You might really enjoy the Strokes albums Angles and Comedown Machine- lots of nice Casablancas singing falsetto and some amazing, restrained guitar solos. See 'Tap Out' from Comedown Machine, I think you'll agree! Will definitely be checking out more of your reviews, very interesting stuff here. Thank you!

Tbh I don't think the strokes ever died but I am a huge strokes fan for me they are my #1 and will always will be I own their records their shirts and fabi inspired me to start playing the drums I know they had a tough time when Julian would be drink at rehearsal but they never died in my opinion, and this new album is just simple a masterpiece for me at least. The reason why they hated each other is because Julian wasn't in the correct place in his life he wouldn't go to rehearsal he would mail his lyrics and stuff like that which pissed of the rest of the band, but now that he doesn't drink or smoke got his act up no we can hear him actually sing his lyrics and not slur. This album aslo talks about aspects of his life how he was in the wrong and also things that happened with his wife, and in one of the songs you hear him sing about a person named Julia and if you know you know

The thing about Julian is that he does radiate the appearance of not giving a single damn, but he actually cares a lot about his work a great deal. To me, it makes for a really cool sound in his voice. It’s very melancholic. Check out human sadness by the voidz for example. You can definitely tell every now in then just how much he actually cares. Probably a lot more than 90% of other artists these days, to be honest...

brooklyn bridge to chorus is really a nice song. it has this 80's vibes and at the same time is a rock and a indie song. I just love it so much!!!!

I will say there are things (whether in terms of instrumental contrast or vocals) you point to as novel that they’ve being doing for a while. but i think you’re picking up on the earnest quality that’s coming through in the songwriting, and that ‘s something i do feel is new for a strokes album, and part of the reason i’ve enjoyed this one so much (even though i love all of the others too, except CM)

I love both the Stones and The Strokes. Stoned output was more frequent though. They have had some greater misses (Dirty Work and Her Majesty’s Satanic Request). The Strokes for some reason have never lived up to their expected hype. That’s not to say they haven’t done anything decent since their first album. It’s all been great but they were set up to disappoint by the media circus around them. If you ignore all that and just focus on the music then it’s all good.

I became a HUGE fan of the Strokes during my Freshman college year all the way back in 2008. I was totally captivated by the sound of their music and better than all the hip-hop, R&B, and country garbage music that was out at the time. I felt lost during those years and I felt like Julian CasaBlancas wrote everything I was feeling but could not express into words. They are the most underrated Rock band in modern day history that deserve more recognition .
