Selfless is a really beautiful song. Not only the vocals, but the lyrics. Damn.
@chosone2 Жыл бұрын
I've never considered myself much of a fan of ballads. I think a lot of them are bland, cliche, instrumentally uninteresting. Couldn't be much further from what Selfless is like. Julian's vocals are absolutely insane, and lyrics heartfelt yet simultaneously heartbreaking. The instrumentation is super tasteful, but it's doesn't just take a back-seat to the vocals; even has a great guitar solo. Honestly one of my favourite songs

A couple fun facts for this album: Billie Eilish is on record saying that this album was her favorite album of the last few years, and that "At the Door" was her favorite song of 2020. Also "At the Door" is kind of a strange choice for a single. For further context, it was the sole song released when the band announced the album, and has an incredible music video. I don't think it got any radio play like a single normally would, but "Bad Decisions" was the single that was mainly played on alternative stations (at least in my area) I enjoyed the video and I'm glad you enjoyed the album!

I think the reason they used At the Door as a single is because on their last album before the extended hiatus/breakup the last line we heard was “close the door, but not all the way” so it was kinda of a nod to them finally reopening the door (btw the door motif is everywhere through their discography, especially in TNA.) also Julian said they envisioned it as a modern ‘More Than Words’

Every Strokes album, aside maybe from their first 2 albums, is very unique in tone and approach. The first two (Is This It / Room on Fire) basically gave birth to garage/indie rock from early 2000s, setting the tone for other bands who came after them. The 3rd one (First Impressions of Earth) is, if I could say, the rebellious teen among their discography. Anger, depression, rebellion, rage, angst, everything is there. I consider it the most hard hitting one, when you compare it to the others. Then, a shift. They started on their journey of experimenting with electronic, different vocals, and some fans of their early work were a bit pissed, but I personally LOVE the following eras. Their 4th album (Angles) is garage indie rock meets electro sounds intensely. I loooove this album, I think people did it dirty lol. 5th album (Comedown Machine) continues what Angles started, but this time the vocals and vocal effects were reeeeally crazy. Up until now, Julian had only his normal singing tone or his screaming tone, but in CM he started trying to go for higher tones and falsettos. Their EP "Present Future Past" has 3 new songs and a remix, and they represent psrfectly the transitions between early Strokes music (Threat of Joy), their crazy mix era (Drag Queen) and the one that, in my opinion, represents their future: Oblivious. Everything they did, from the first album to this EP, comes together to make The New Abnormal exist. Their essence and origins in garage rock; the vocals ranging from timid to much more refined falsettos to screams that come when necessary; the electro finding its place amongst the band and their sound. In my opinion, this album is their best. It's a result of years of evolution and growth.

Their music has evolved so much over the past 20 years, but I think the closest they get to matching their music with their aesthetic is the album Room On Fire. Still more along the lines of alt rock, but it’s a little harsher than this, of course in a good way. If you haven’t already, I highly recommend looking more into their music. They’re a top 5 band for me.

Glad to see you liking it. I listened to The Strokes from the very first album and here in Indonesia, I sometimes feel like I'm the only Strokes fan just because they're not the type of band that would sell here. For me, I love Selfless, At The Door, and Ode to The Mets a lot. But I thought the other songs, though they have good and unique parts, they're still something that you feel like they'd be best of played on the background. Of course I'm not saying that they're bad songs or that all songs have to be able to draw your attention to them. It's I guess, from the perspective of someone who likes to sing, it's not very fun to sing them.

The Strokes are one of my favourite bands of all time, “The New Abnormal” is pretty damn good for a comeback album after “Comedown Machine” which was somewhat of a letdown IMO. “Is This It” is probably their best album, and it sounds very different. Very garage rock with a much rawer less polished sound than “The New Abnormal”. You can hear their influences from bands like Television and The Velvet Underground. At the time of their debut in 2001, they were lauded as the coolest band in the world. Seriously! The first 3 albums are exceptional, “Angles” has it’s moments but it’s mostly filler, and “Comedown Machine” is well, not very good. They really should do a best of album too. Listen to “Threat of Joy” if you’re sticking with a chilled lazy type of vibe. The Adults are Talking sounds amazing tho!

Yay! This is an interesting album, and a "grower" for sure. As others have said, though, 'Is This It' is one of those dipped in gold albums. There's a fantastic book named after a Strokes song, 'Meet Me In The Bathroom', which is an oral history of the New York music scene 2001-2011, and you wondering about their fashion made me dip into it... "JEANNETTE LEE: I remember that first day we heard their CD we were calling out the names, like, "Is this a real name? These are rock-star names, they can't be true! Could it possibly be that they look good as well?" They did. VITO ROCCOFORTE: English indie rock was just boring. There were all these post-Radiohead bands. Everybody in indie rock was trying to be Radiohead but there's only one Radiohead." So yeah, the whole leather jackets and Converse look, which The Strokes made A Thing, felt kind of a response to the dullness of popular bands, and part of their "too cool for school" attitude rather than an aggressive one. The book is so fun and juicy btw, really makes you wanna have lived the 'indie sleaze' in NY thing, haha. It's also just been made into a feature-length documentary, so watch out for that.
