In the UK you say 'you'd make a better window than a door' when somebody stands in front of you and blocks your view.

I think he means in the sense of having it/her. Think of it like window shopping, he likes what he sees but he knows he's probably better off not cashing in, which is why he chooses, to want from afar than to actually have it/her? Or like an aesthetic, good looks from the outside[window] but a piece of hot trash on the inside[door] could be could not be, that's just how I see it.
@jacobiskandermusic4 жыл бұрын
I interpret it similar to what JAWKNEE said ^ if someone would be better off as a door, then you would enter the door to dive into that person. If someone is better as a window, then you want to glance into their person from afar and not enter

long time strokes fan here and lemme just say that this is my favorite track from the new abnormal after 2 years of consideration. so so underrated. each instrument beautifully intertwines with the next in such an enjoyable way and Julian's voice is so amazing. truly my favorite band ever, they helped me through so much and they have no idea. thank you.

Lyrics: You're not the same anymore Don’t wanna play that game anymore You'd make a better window than a door Oh, the strangers, they implore It gets so easy to ignore Just like the girl next door Uncle's house, it was noon Sorry, boy, I can’t employ ya You are strange, but I like you Sorry, this is overdue I promised I would do it right Her and a boy on a Saturday night And now the door slams shut A child prisoner grows up To seek his enemy's throat cut (I'm on and on it, on and on and on it) We're on the way, fuel the jet Can see that what he wants, he gets What does your sworn enemy regret? I didn't know, I didn't care I don't even understand Did somethin' wrong, I wasn’t sure Stay on top of this, or else I was afraid, I fucked up Yeah, yeah, yeah I couldn’t change, it's too late And now it’s time to show up Late again, I can't grow up And now it's on me, they've given up Uncle’s house, I forget Violent tendencies I get Your timing sucks, she went overboard Don't forget, you are insured I didn't know, I wasn't sure Can't remember all that well I couldn't change, was too late Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Idk if I'm reading into it too much (and most likely just projecting), but no one seems to be talking about it in the comments so Imma just comment: My theory is this song is about a sexual assault victim. Let me break down why I was led to this conclusion. "You're not the same anymore Don't wanna play that game anymore" My interpretation: You've changed, you're depressed and don't enjoy life as much. "You're more like a window than a door" my first interpretation is that they have become a person that is shut off, only looking out and this could also relate to the depression but a more sinister analogy came to mind: A thief breaking in a window, rather than being invited through the door (ik thieves can break in through doors but its probably easier to break a window than pick a lock, ie forceful but easier) There is also a line about him ignoring this "girl" next door, as if he wants to forget about something that happened between them. "Uncle's house, it was noon Sorry, boy, I can’t employ ya You are strange, but I like you Sorry, this is overdue I promised I would do it right Her and a boy on a Saturday night" Interpretation: the boy goes over to "uncle's" house looking for some kind of work. (not sure if this whole thing is meant to be the uncle talking or the "her" mentioned) The "You are strange, but I like you" seems innocent at first glance but the next line is off "Sorry, this is overdue"... Why would someone say that after rejecting someone for a job? I think it means that the person talking has been lusting after the boy and thought what she was about to do to him was "overdue" "And now the door slams shut A child prisoner grows up To seek his enemy's throat cut (I'm on and on it, on and on and on it) We're on the way, fuel the jet Can see that what he wants, he gets What does your sworn enemy regret" interpretation: A door was quite literally slammed shut, and perhaps locked with two people inside... A child prisoner can have two meanings: They are a prisoner to their trauma as a child or they were kept hostage in a way. When it says "Can see that what he wants, he gets" to me means He was also lustful of this person at some point and thought he wanted this seemingly older woman (while referring to himself as boy and child). It's obvious who the sworn enemy is, and why she has nothing to regret since she got away with it. "I didn't know, I didn't care I don't even understand Did somethin' wrong, I wasn’t sure Stay on top of this, or else I was afraid, I fucked up Yeah, yeah, yeah I couldn’t change, it's too late" interpretation: He didn't realize that what the woman did to him was wrong and he thought it was okay since he thought he wanted it too, until later he realized what happened was wrong, but it was too late to change it after he realized. "Uncle’s house, I forget Violent tendencies I get Your timing sucks, she went overboard Don't forget, you are insured I didn't know, I wasn't sure Can't remember all that well..." interpretation: His memory is foggy, this often happens when you have suffered a trauma and you intentionally or subconsciously want to forget... maybe he can't even remember clearly if he DID in fact want what happened. The guy seems to be getting therapy for his "violent tendancies" that I suspect are part of his development issues due to the trauma, but since this happened so long ago he feels "Your timing sucks" to help him. And in the same line he admits: "She went overboard." and he goes on again to say that he can't remember what happened well. Edit: My theory is having me think of the different meanings of so much in the whole album. Maybe I've just been listening to this album on repeat too much.
