In regards to Mother 3, I don’t think the game would have released at all if Itoi didn’t think his vision was sufficiently fulfilled, so even if some of its unused content was always intended to be in the final release, I don’t think it’s too bad that it was left out.

Time restraints taking effect on Mother 3's development is a guarantee. Mother 3 was always switching consoles and going through development hell. Lucas was basically hanging out in Duke Nukem's treehouse.

Oddity is the imaginary game output of deadbeats without any technical skill, foresight, or management, making something they literally have no capacity of doing. They r the game equivalent of teenagers writing group-fanfiction (gr8ly impressive fanfiction, at that) & promising each other that it’ll b a movie but none of them can actually adequately film, act, edit, nor write screenplays. I need 2 go off & copy paste this as a standalone comment bc I think we all need 2 recognise that Oddity is a case of failure.

GTA is not normally a series I'm interested in either, but I love San Andreas and I do recommend it. I've never even really played the story missions! My brother and I would just pass the controller back & forth doing whatever we felt like (such as pedaling through traffic on a bicycle & bunny hopping over cars, lol). I've tried the newer games but I dislike how realistic they are, I prefer San Andreas because of the lower poly graphics and the slightly janky physics for our ridiculous antics. I can't have much fun committing crimes in a modern-looking virtual world 😅 I was very disappointed when I heard the Switch version was bad, so I never picked up a copy...you're right for looking out for the PS2 original!

I think the Mother-inspired game Omori fits very well with this video's themes. Its developer had a very hard time developing the game over 6 years. Lots of miscommunications and drama, but also many lessons to be learned.

On the note of corporate intervention I will say that mandated deadlines can add positive stress to a creative sometimes Some of the best art was made off of constraints, after all I can say especially with music, that something unique comes out of you when you don't have to think and let the creative flow state channel out of you and there are a few examples of art that was so ambitious to the point of being unfinished like The Thief and the Cobbler or, sadly, Berserk I'm not saying this to appeal to our crappy corporate overlords, but to make the best out of a situation that most professional artists are gonna be in Great video

Thank you for this one. Hits at a good time. I'm back to the drawing board of working on a mother-like game/game-engine (after abandoning the project on various engines). The discussion of sacrificing so much time to create art for others to enjoy is way too relevant as I've spent a few years trying to get it going. The passionate fanbase of Mother 3 can be a powerful force of motivation.

I think games, at least ones at the scale and competency of Mother 3, are inherently a corporate art form. The technical backbone required to properly express the story Itoi wanted to express in the way he wanted to express it requires a big team of programmers, artists, musicians, etc. and a pretty hefty budget. So while the constraints of being a product may infringe on the vision of the artist involved, the artist only gets to have a crack at his vision because of the nature of it being a product.

I rhink of how Majora's Mask was made how it was roughly a year and just how i credible it came out and vital to my upbringing in appreciating games as art and taking a second look at games seeing them in-depth. A really interesting topic thanks. Something to think about. Also makes me think of the recent controversy with the game awards and how devs were heavily limited on how much they could say when reciving their rewards. I really wish more behind the scenes of gaming is better documented in general just to humanise the whole cycle more.

That game awards stuff was borderline infuriating, I didn't even bother watching the show this year and I don't regret seeing how crappy it was. I think all of this really goes to show that despite everything, most people really don't see any video games as art

The business behind game development hides A LOT of art history that could b documented & appreciated. It’s terrifying how we’re living in a time a lot of ppl r doing art but their experiences will probably b lost bc of capitalism.

The fact MOTHER 3 GBA's development has less info than it's 64DD counterpart is extremely odd to me. (Someone please shadow drop a random 2004 GBA cart that conveniently has YO MAMA 3 Pro to type, please I beg you)

I feel a hole in my heart from the amount of missing content in Mother 3. I always dream about a Mother 3 remake that implements these theoretical features. & that’s mostly bc of my impossible need 4 smth more conclusive or happier … since most of the game left me with trauma. I rlly dislike business shutting down art. I think there’s games that don’t need all that time but a game like Mother 3 that was beyond just a product deserved everything. I do believe there r circumstances where deadlines yield incredible results. Ofc Majora’s Mask was made in a rush but it forced the creators 2 gather all their old, scrapped ideas & forced out an innovative piece … ofc their emotional turmoil in making the game fed directly 2 the game’s darkness. Imo, Mother 3 was making commentary on HUGE things. HUGE things that still affect us & hold profound significance. I’m surprised with how woke Mother 3 is. It had positive depictions of genderqueer ppl & successful communism. I am honestly astounded. & although it already had themes of morality & psychological trauma, the thought that it was gonna b a bigger part of the game freaks me out. This game freaks me out!! & I wish it was everything it dreamt of being.
