How I wish we had had resources like this back 30 years ago when I started teaching without even knowing what a perfect tense was. Merry Cristmas and keep up the excellent work.

Hi, i'm Nuria, from Spain. I follow your videos and of course your podcast. I learn French and German, at the same time I learn English. I say this because in this other two languages and in Spanish, as you already know, this mood is important and i just can say that it's a pitty that some english speakers are slowly forgetting it. For me it's easier to use this mood to make the difference of what i'm saying. Thank you for your work. It really help me understand many many things in this journey. Bye

That was very weird for me 'cause in Portuguese not only have we lots of conjugation but we also have three subjunctive tenses (imperfect past/present/future) Then I have always had difficulty to express that mood in English. Thank you so much, Christian. I'm really getting a lot of things from you!!!

You're a great English teacher. I've found that you provide the sort of background and reasoning I need to understand the why and the how, to relate structures with the Spanish ones, and to settle the knowledge. Now, in this spirit... I have a seldom vague and intuitive understanding of the choice for the use and combination of the "was" or "were" in conditionals (and perhaps even in wishing expressions) was (and it still formally might be) related or hints to whether what you're pondering and/or saying is factual or counterfactual to your assumptions. I've found some explanations supporting this, and controversial opinions when discussing this with native English speakers. Like, if I say "if Mike was here, then Jenny wouldn't" vs "if Mike were here, then Jenny wouldn't", in one case I'm hinting that I assume o believe Mike actually was or could have been in the premises, and in the other that he wasn't or couldn't have been there, and use this to imply or reinforce an educated guess about Jenny's presence o absence. I would like to know your take on this, and if this makes sense, if you could refer to some examples or clarifying sources. Also, I understand that in colloquial language, the choice of "was" or "were" is a hint of the speaker's origin (e.g. in the UK people leans towards the use of "was" and in America towards the "were"... or it's the other way around?). Is that so? Thank you, very much.

Interesting, but incomplete lesson. U affirm: -the use of modal verbs to express the "irreality"(outside of time) of subjunctive, 5:19; -English developed other ways to express "this idea" (i.e. the idea of subjunctive), --9:16--.- Now, we need examples of how to do that. A comparison between 5/10 sentences in the subj. mood and "the other ways" to express the same thing/meaning, by using a different sentence/structure. Ex.: I suggest she eat pizza VS .... ??(what sentence) she should eat pizza? Only in this way our understanding would be unequivocal/definitive. Have u already done it? Could u do it pls? Thanks a lot Christian!

So, if I say 'I recommend that he goes on a diet', would it be less formal and more up-to-date, but still correct?
@del55824 жыл бұрын
As an American, the use of the subjunctive indicates authority and polish, like a college professor or police officer. It shows someone cares and definitely went to college. Both are correct, but it depends on the air you want to carry, and I think it would be nice as an English learner to show more finesse with the language than many of the native speakers you will interact with.

The subjunctive is alive and well in American which does use it a lot. I can't imagine anyone NOT ever using it. British people perhaps yes as they replace it with indicatives or should. That said, most people don't know it's called subjunctive.
