The Subscription Economy is EVIL

Why everything is a subscription. John Deere tractors are a subscription and don’t allow you to repair the tractor. They are fighting for the right to repair. Companies are basically saying You will own nothing and be happy. Subscription services are getting worse. Streaming subscriptions like Netflix, Disney plus and Hulu are charging more for less content and every business model is becoming a recurring charge. It's getting worse as companies like BMW are charging a subscription for heated seats. Are any subscriptions worth it? In this video essay we analyze how this is dangerous for consumers.

Nothing worse than subscribing to something and immediately finding that that product or service is only with the 'premium subscription.' It's called bait and switch. I find the fear of missing out is actually worse than missing out. Unsubscribing is very liberating.

Iirc, Huffpo was an agglomeration company that didn't produce its own news, but merely paid for others and combined all the news on one site for their customer.

Governments need to step in and stop the "subscription" nonsense and require businesses like Spotify, Adobe and Microsoft to sell an option where people can buy their product outright rather than paying a fee over and over again. At this point, would rather pay $100 or even $1000 just to buy software like Adobe Photoshop and illustrator. I'm not rich, and i don't want to be paying ridiculous prices just to use software like MS Word. My Mother uses an older version of Adobe illustrator where you don't have to pay a ridiculous price just to be able to use it.
@Valoric
@Valoric 9 ай бұрын
I'd much prefer going back to the huge upfront price for software, then using said software for 12 years until i simply must buy the new version. Since they still need the software to be affordable enough to buy in the first place, it'll still be cheaper long term than a subscription. It also properly financially incentivizes product IMPROVEMENT instead of product maintenance/churn.

I save like $200 after I stopped Spotify. I was thinking to myself “it was $15, now it’s $17.. won’t it just go up and up?” My mum then told me how much that is a year and it shocked me. I’m not into any other services. Netflix isn’t my thing. There are some app subscriptions I’m into for colouring, as they kind of “force” you into it, because the ads pop up and you can’t get out of them. But I’m not caving in. It’s not worth it. I’d rather have a physical colouring book now.

Anytime an app or tool comes out with a subscription, I am immediately out. I wanted to learn video editing with Adobe premiere pro but opted for Final Cut because it’s not a subscription. Amazon prime? I was losing money with Amazon prime. Amazon said I saved $89 last year with prime but that wasn’t counting the $120 a year so I lost money. Cloud storage? I moved most of my stuff to an SSD that’s important and anything that is critical files to keep, I have on another flash drive as well as backup. For photoshop, I moved to Affinity instead. Not as robust as photoshop but I’m just an amateur photographer. Streaming services, I try to keep it as lean as possible on that. My biggest regret was buying ebooks because it’s a licensing purchase instead of a book purchase. I decided to start buying paper books again. My rule in digital products is that if I use it everyday, I’ll subscribe. I’ve seen some content creators that produce something once a month or less and have subscription open (which I find is ridiculous).

The only time I get subscription is when I want to see something specific on a platform, once I'm done, I quickly end my membership with preference of using trial / promo rate while using the service. The content of some of those platforms is really low tier. Spotify / Pandora algorithms kept pushing me remixes of songs that I like, which felt like getting RC Cola at the store instead of an actual Coke. I do use Amazon prime on occasion when it offers $1 a week trial, since it is cheaper than a singe shipping fee. Life of a cheapskate feels great! 😁
@Valoric

I’ve been subscription weeding lately and I’ve cut it down to just my internet, phone plan, KZbin premium family plan and Amazon prime. That’s probably the best I can do at the moment. Prime is too good a value in my country for now. As soon as they jack the price I’m out. KZbin is unwatchable without premium. Also I only pay a fraction since we all pay a share. I’m leaving all other video and music streaming for blurays, dvds and cds again. Rip them and now I can listen or watch it on anything. No more gaming subscriptions because they’re the ultimate scam.

The issue with subscription models, is that it is using a crowd source funding yet decreasing the value of their subscription. But increasing the costs that people are required to pay, this breaks the illusion of it being a good value. And this is why regulation for these kinds of services needs to be prevelent. a.k.a 80's and 90 kids remember those magazines about building a t-rex model, a ship or a tank, ended up being 300 dollars for a 20 dollar Figure. This isn't a new thing.

i wanted to make a video about this, some services supposedly free (and monetised through ads and/or data collection) are now also charging people money. people are clearly willing to spend money, but they didn't care about how much people can even afford. exclusivity has enabled these practice and some of them even exercising copyright in an exploitative manner. subscription-only things and any service proactively taking actions against people engaging in leaking/piracy/etc. are very likely going even worse over time, so don't pay for it. among the VTuber industry, most likely you end up hearing them wanting to set up memberships. but the point is, it is most likely ends up in Google more than the actual creators. a lot of Nintendo's games are only on its Switch, and there are already features locked behind its online service.

@5:10 Wow. So, the cost for these features isn't derived from parts and labor. It's purely a function forcing higher price points. If it's cheaper to install the hardware for everyone and charge for anyone using it, won't this increase the standard price for people who never use the feature? If not, why hobble the car's standard feature set and give people a better product for less money? They told on themselves with this one.

I dont see how it can be sustainable....not everything can be a subscription and eventually people will have to make a choice. The problem for companies is, that the subscription model really is the best business model, and they are forced to show investors/the markets that they are thinking about implementing it somehow. (P.S. on a side note: the porn industry have traditionally been pioneers of the subscription model, which is the main way they make a lot of money despite porn being free. They make it super easy to sign up just to see that one video...then make it super hard to unsubscribe....and by the time you do, you've paid at least 3 or 4 months of payment.

What's better watching ads or pay for subscriptions ?
@RaisedMedia
@RaisedMedia Жыл бұрын
Well there’s a few things to consider. Firstly how much ads bother you, the value of your time wasted watching ads, and the cost of the subscription. Only you can determine what’s better after considering those factors. From the business perspective, subscriptions are better because it’s predictable revenue while ad revenue fluctuates quite dramatically.

Healthcare is also a subscription model in The States too, so we're already used to it. You pay monthly for a set of vital services that you hope to never need to use, but it's still money you pay monthly *just in case*. Not surprised other media avenues have taken to this model. It really does work too well, but at what cost? Poor people can't fund everything. We're literally passing around the same $20 dollars to help each other and pay for these services, adjusted for inflation lol. Maybe the collapse is immenent, maybe it's Maybelline?

Just found your channel. Awesome content. Was gonna add: 1) isn't subscription model what we use for property, via property tax? If we don't pay our annual subscription (property tax), the govt will come in and cancel it (evict us from our property, even if the house on it was paid off). 2) wonder if another company will come along and agglomeration the streaming companies' content so you only need to subscribe to that company to get everything (or select things) from Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, etc)? Iirc, Huffpo was an agglomeration company that didn't produce its own news, but merely paid for others and combined all the news on one site for their customer.

I miss watching TV it had the same feel as like a radio you catch your favourite TV show like you would catch your favourite song on the radio instead of you just putting it on until the point you get bored of it or you're just over stimuli lies with a bunch of pictures of the show what's normally just a bunch of people standing around looking all serious that doesn't draw me in dopamine affect when you catch your favourite show on television even if it's like the last five minutes because you know it will be on again like at 10

I think that Software *May* be an exception. After all, No company would continue to Update their Software, If they aren't going to make any Money by doing It. They'd much rather Just let It be, and at some Point this would lead to the products having Bugs or Security issues (depending on the Type of Software). If instead there's subsctiptions, at least in theory there is this incentive for the company to improve the Service, in Order to retain old customers and get new Users to Join. Note: my Point is only Standing for Software! Products shouldn't be paid for in subsctiptions (BMW heating for example)
@RaisedMedia
@RaisedMedia Жыл бұрын
That’s a valid point! Previously pre-subscription software had a shelf life where the software companies would provide updates and ensure it is stable.

Completely depends on the product. Usually a few years at the very least and the product would be very stable (not requiring bug fixes).
@axeslinger94

It seems like most software updates are purely cosmetic. Can anyone actually tell, even using a beloved service, what's actually changed with it? Most people aren't tech savvy enough to sense security updates, visual updates keep you stuck finding the same tasks within the software for longer than it used to take because it was put somewhere else or renamed entirely, it's a mess. Being a cynical person is increasingly easy these days but you can't sit there and say it makes any sense when you really bother to look at just how frequent it is. If people are trying to hack your sh*t that often, maybe make a finished product before putting it out for people to BUY and use.

3:55 surplus value is generated for every song over 8 that you add every previous month though. If you're trying to weigh up value VS cost you need to go from the very beginning. It's an exaggerated example but imagine I subscribe for two months. In the first month I listen to 100 new unique songs, in month two I listen to an additional 3 unique songs. With the logic you've used this is bad value for money because in month two Spotify cost $5 more than the new songs would've. But you're ignoring the $92 saved in the previous month.
@RaisedMedia
@RaisedMedia Жыл бұрын
Yes, you’re right that to accurate determine how valuable the Spotify subscription is you should be factoring in previous months value. I crunched the timeline of Spotify not being worth it for the sake of the video. Still, using your own example, Spotify would eventually be worse than iTunes if you continued to not add enough songs (because of lack of ownership) but that time would be years. Spotify only started generating profit in 2017 and are still trying to be in the growth phase. In the near future they will continue to raise the subscription rate and that timeline of value will shrink.
@samprice1302

@@RaisedMedia I get where you're coming from, but I think using it as an example of something bad for consumers undermines your main points because of how easy it is for Spotify to pay for itself. I might be an outlier, but I've been using Spotify for around 8 years and my "Liked Songs" list sits at 2,939 songs. That's around $2,900 in iTunes value. Keep in mind that this isn't even the total number of unique songs I've listened to, just the ones that I liked enough to save. at $9.99 that's 24 years of Spotify. That's if I never listen to another new song, and isn't even representative of all the songs I've listened to.
@RaisedMedia
@RaisedMedia Жыл бұрын
I agree that you are probably somewhat of an outlier. Like a buffet, some people that eat a ton might actually beat the restaurant. You’re one of those people with Spotify. What Spotify is relying on is people paying and not using the service to its maximum value. Also let’s say your bills were tight and you had to stop paying for Spotify, well then you can’t really listen to any of those songs anymore. Spotify does have free tiers with advertisements but for the sake of the argument, it’s either all or nothing situation. Some people like you win under a subscription model, but a lot of people lose without even realizing it.
