true but it is intentionally anachronistic with decor looking like it's straight out of the 70s and the 80s-style aerobic craze. wow it's almost like the movie is trying to make a point about the timelessness of its message!
@modernamami5861

It’s not. Fargeat likes to build her own separate worlds with her movies. The time period is a mix of 80s, 90s, and the present. Elisabeth has a smartphone but she uses a landline to call The Substance. Even the way her recliner is set up in front of the TV is meant to nod back at an older aesthetic.

It's wild to watch a movie that's overtly about unrealistic beauty expectations put upon women and the male gaze, and then look at a hollywood starlet who is not only beautiful, but also had any 'imperfections' removed in the movie with prosthetics, vfx and makeup, and say she's not that pretty. Borderline parody territory here

I think they are one consciousness the whole time so they are one. I think the issue comes from them having different brains. So the memories of Elizabeth are not in Sue’s brain so they pretty much forget everything when they are in different bodies so they feel like separate people.

When I watched this movie in the theater, I was literally sitting there feeling ashamed about being a man. Not in a derogatory way toward the movie, but because I thought back to 2021 when I saw pictures of Demi Moore. She had clearly had some kind of plastic surgery done on her face and my first thought was “damn, she was so fine back in the 90s. Now she looks terrible”. I was comparing her to herself 30 yrs ago. I was doing the very thing that the movie was displaying. I saw myself in the men being shown in the movie. Now, in fairness to myself I also look at picture of me from when I was in my physical prime and I tell myself I fell off. Basically what I’m trying to say is that the movie hit me in a much different way than these two. I felt terrible for Elizabeth and how she was trying to adapt to reach a standard that’s literally impossible to reach. The self hatred and constant comparison was heartbreaking.

I get your point about just wanting Sue herself to fall apart on the stage, but the whole point of Elisasue was to show Harvey's monster that he created (as well as society-the people in the audience), which was this horrifying amalgamation of Elisabeth and Sue. The monster shooting blood on everyone is like "her blood being on their hands". Sue dying in her perfect form would just cause them to pity her. It was over the top with the monster on purpose.

They are one but they are jealous of how they see each other. Is like holding a mirror to your face constantly. Hence why she built that closet to store her old self. She did not want to be reminded of her past “mediocre life”. It really is about loving all the good and bad that you are. And how you want everyone to see you in “social media”

Eli and Sue share the same consciousness, they’re the one and same person. You also aren’t supposed to think too much about the movie cus some scenes aren’t supposed to make sense, at the end they both were alive at the same time just to have a fight scene. edit: those scenes like where Sue’s insides fell out when the guy pulled the zipper, or the chicken bone inside her body are ‘nightmares’ she experiences before waking up.

1:55 ... snow ... I think everyone needs to hear this: "This movie is a metaphor and it speaks in metaphors. It's basically a construction that carries metaphors." That's why you can't, on any level, think about anything here strictly from a practical point of view. Yes, it doesn’t snow in California, but snow is a symbol of winter, and winter in life symbolizes entering the final stage of life - entering old age.

Sue and Elisabeth represent ego and the real self, respectively. They’re not conscious during the other’s week. It’s a bit abstract. The point is that we self-destruct, chasing youth. Yes, the audience represents societal pressures but the lesson is how we treat ourselves as we age. That’s how they’re “one.” Ego won the battle in Elisabeth’s case, clearly. It destroyed her entirely. I think the old man/young doctor are just doing The Substance normally. He is aging, The Other is not. Sue is abusing The Substance. She’s evil and self-obsessed. The doctor isn’t. But it goes to show that even when done “properly,” The Substance can’t make you happy. The old man felt eaten away because constantly comparing your current state to your younger self (or other younger people) is not self-loving. It’s a resource, not a cure for vanity.
@MorbidxAngel

I feel the the point of the movie is missed lowkey between these two which is kinda unfortunate, but that's kind of how the issues developed throughout time when it comes to women and aging within not only professionally but in the entertainment/beauty industry.

Loved your reaction!! Loved the commentary throughout!! Societal expectations+rules are deeply harsher on all women and cuts deeper when we get into intersectionality. Men often suffer from body dysmorphia that were involved in athletics or dance during boyhood. Gym junkies that workout for aesthetics over health…Wearing a bathing suit and society expecting abs (height/weight proportions). As a gay man, I even resonated with the films’ themes. Loved your commentary!! Loved the fashions i.e 🐉 robe+💛coat. Glad the algorithm did its thing to stumble across your channel. Deliciously disgusting this film is! It has style+substance🧪💉A social commentary on aging with body horror elements using practical effects, impeccable sound+editing. No amount of change will ever be enough to appease everyone much less undeserving, misogynistic men who do not actually appreciate women for who they are, but only how fckable they deem women to be. Sue represents the younger version of Elisabeth, still impressionable, full of faux confidence bc the patriarchy has beholden a woman’s value to beauty and youth, still fertile. Elisabeth chases her youth in the form of Sue much like someone that keeps running back to the plastic surgeon’s office. And there are consequences bc one begins to stray so far from their original appearance, dare I say monstrous. The greatest tenderness the character gives herself is when ElisaSue emerges and the greatest vacation she gives herself is the absence of a body for judgment. Just a mere amoeba with Elisabeth as the nucleus of the cell. The violence we put ourselves through comparing ourselves to our own younger version of ourselves when we look at pics of us a decade ago. We must be kinder to ourselves. I like that her yellow coat symbolized the egg in the beginning and then we see Sue wearing the coat to emphasize they are one post injection. *Outward beauty, but inner ugliness to thyself. The enemy is the inner me🩷🩷
