Demi Moore was perfectly cast for this movie. In a way it's a reflection of her. A very talented very beautiful actress having to deal with getting older and the way Hollywood and society as a whole view ageing actresses. It's true. Once an actress reaches a certain age, film roles dry up. They can't find work and they are constantly compared to much younger modern actresses. It's a film about how society views and treats ageing actresses and the effects of that.

My problem was: Why would Demi's character bother? she seems to not share the memories of her younger counter-part so she is sacrificing her looks, her time and her life for seemingly someone completely different from her to enjoy their youth. It needed for Demi to be able to feed of memories she inherits when switching back...or the younger her is identical to her at that age. It felt more an allegory of Mother/Daughter relationships
@Pheenips20 күн бұрын
To me, that’s kind of the point in a way. She’s been sold this fake idea of a “better you”, of beauty and youth and then for her to not actually experience any of those things herself, it shows how those ideals aren’t actually for YOU they’re for the ‘audience’ and society and the people who have told you that you’re only worth something if you’re young and beautiful etc. I think it’s actually a really strong message that supports the overall theme of the film!

i think its false ad “a better you” what does it means really becouse if you want a better you (you) work on you not creat another becouse another will not like you becouse it thinks its better so really when you think about it the movie is simplly telling us -life goes on-time is not the enemy if you exicuted and achevied during it regret is the enemy so demi wanted time again and in the movie she is a washedup star washedup but a star even an oscar winner one so her enemy was that she thought her looks only her looks not talent not hard work not luck not passion but for her it was only looks that matter and here i will upset you denis quid is real peaple like that exist and they value woman with looks in certain departments specilly entertainment thats sad but its true and it will never change never ever so a woman should valeu her self of what she achevied and who she is as a human being as well as men thats the moral messege of this film love what you become if you did well and tried hard to do so throughtout youre life

@Pheenips it's an interesting interpretation. I'm not sure they executed Demi's motivation to hit home that thematic message. I cant understand why she continued what she does when she clearly hates Sue and has no enjoyment from seeing her succeed. The disconnect felt too apparent
@IvanLapse17 күн бұрын
I'm so glad someone else thought the same thing. After she watches the USB commercial for the Substance, I was left thinking... what is the appeal? Why would anyone want to sleep for a week while their better, younger clone lives it up? When Demi first wakes up and finds herself dehydrated and sick with a stitched up back and no knowledge of what her clone did, why would she keep doing it? There doesn't seem to be any upside to this process, so her motivation for continuing it was unclear.
@LEFF9013 күн бұрын
I asked myself the same question. Why would Moore's character is so obsessed with maintaining a younger, narcissistic, destructive version of herself. Also, only one version is living the dream, while the other one falls into the abysses. IMO, It's a mix of loneliness, self-hatred obsession and projection. Moore's character is lonely. She has no friends, no real love interest, no children, no family. On her birthday only the people from her job seem to wish her a HB. On the phone calls she has with the substance's guy, he keeps reminding her of her loneliness. As the movie goes, she sinks deeper into that loneliness, that feeling of being undeserving, and the more she grips into living through Sue. Sue is literally all she has. Even when she realizes that Sue is literally "unaliving" her she can't let her go. My interpretation is that's it could be an illustration of obsessed people/fans who live their lives entirely through the eyes of celebrities, because their own lives are worthless (in their eyes). That narrative is brought up a few times in the movie. At one point, the old man at the cafe says something like: "don't forget that you deserve to exist/be here" (I'm translating that from the french version of the movie) and later Moore says something like "You're the only version of me deserving to live/exist.. it's going to be our big night). With Sue, all the voids in Moore's life can be filled (even if at the end of the day, we all know that it's not really the case): Celebrity, accomplishments, some form of companionship.. But, I just came watching from the movie, so I didn't have the time to think deeper about it.

The two have met, talked about films, have openly shown support for each other’s channels (Hell, when people were giving Jeremy grief for disliking Dunkirk, Chris was one of the first to defend him). If they’re not friends, they clearly respect each other as critics. So stop being such parasocial weirdos and just soak in your desperation for your political feelings to feel validated elsewhere.

Yesterday I had the chance to watch “The Substance,” a film that promised to keep me on the edge of my seat, and to a large extent, it delivered on that promise. The psychological plot is intriguing and draws you in from the first moment, maintaining constant suspense for 85% of the running time. Demi Moore delivers a solid performance, taking the viewer through a labyrinth of emotions and unexpected twists. However, despite its strong beginning and development, the ending of the film left me with a bittersweet taste. The grotesquely comical conclusion felt out of place in a psychological thriller that had built such a tense and serious atmosphere. This abrupt change in tone not only puzzled me, but also took away the impact of what could have been a masterpiece of the genre. In short, “The Substance” is a film that almost achieves greatness. If it weren’t for its jarring ending, I would have easily placed it among the top three films of the year. Still, it's a worthwhile cinematic experience, especially for those who enjoy a good psychological thriller, albeit with a warning about its unexpected ending.

My first experience with body horror was sitting with a group of friends watching The Human Centipede. The scientific accuracy of the procedure and the timeless tale, yet most relatable tale, of simply being at the wrong place at the wrong time, spooked me good. A simple run in with the wrong person ends up in the transformation of three innocent people into a degraded experiment, slowly stripping away their humanity and dignity. The human spirit is gradually destroyed, which for me, personally, is the scariest part of the film. Tusk is another example of a body horror that depicts a realistic experiment of turning a man into a walrus, and watching the humanity drain from not only Justin Long’s eyes, but within ourselves. It’s a film I just cannot rewatch, simply for the fact that the human spirit is destroyed in an innocent, albeit unlikeable, human being. The thing about Tusk and Human Centipede is that although they are fiction, the stories are rooted in reality. Although the possibility of encountering such deranged scientists is not likely, the stories fill you in on the unlucky ones that do. So, the possibility of “what if this did happen” is also terrifying to me. , Unlike these other films, The Substance is rooted moreso in a surrealistic reality, where everything is elevated above what we perceive to be reality. The name “Elisebeth Sparkles”, played by Demi Moore, is an example of this. Elizabeth, being a name associated with beauty and fame, potentially referencing Elizabeth Taylor, and “Sparkles” which is synonymous with wonder, grandeur, and magnificence. The plot is driven by Sparkle’s older age, which has now led her to be removed from her iconic workout show which is made to help women reach their peak beauty, as well as to appease the male gaze, with emphasis on her breasts, curves, and everything else that would normally make a straight man tuned in. With that being said, the elevation of the film is apparent within the first 10 minutes, not only shown through Sparkle’s name, but in the introduction of Harvey, most likely named after Harvey Weinstein. Harvey is introduced as loud, unapologetic, disgusting, sloppy, and purely animalistic, driven solely by the materialism that women’s sexual bodies fuel. He sees women as tools, nothing more, and there is absolutely no nuance to his character. What you see with him, is what you get. In fact, there is absolutely no nuance with any of the male characters in this film with the exception of two: one who introduces Elizabeth to the medicine of The Substance, and the other, a gentleman named Fred who has always thought Elizabeth to be beautiful, even now despite her older age. Other than those two, the men depicted in this film are depicted as sexually driven, mindless, inconsiderate, and greedy animals of desire. Again, there is no nuance to these characters. These characters are designed to make a statement about what it’s like to be a beautiful woman in a man’s world, and men often feed off of them, and force them to make themselves look desirable. So once you know how elevated of a film this is, you begin to suspend your disbelief and accept the fact that these characters are flanderized, in my opinion, the body horror elements don’t seem too scary. In my opinion, the scariest parts of this film deal with the most human aspects. For example, a needle going into a pus filled wound, or a nail falling off, or a teeth falling out (a common nightmare for most people). However, by the climax, the body horror elements are so outrageously grotesque and surrealistic, that it’s moreso disturbing than scary. Now granted, at this point, I don’t believe this film is trying to be scary, it’s trying to make a statement on the physical and mental toll on women as they try to make themselves appear sexy and desirable to society at the expense of their own mental and physical health. I get it, I 100% do. But I have to say, again, the climax, is so outrageously grotesque, and obnoxiously in your face with how gross it is, it feels as if they’re trying to go balls to the wall with the effects for the sake of going balls to the wall with the effects. I’m trying to stray away from spoilers, but at this point, I didn’t find it grotesque to watch anymore. Again, I know it’s not the point per se, but “the monster” at the end didn’t scare me or make me feel hopeless or destroyed like The Human Centipede or Tusk did. Instead, it felt like conglomeration of (amazing) practical effects. I hope I was able to kind of put my thoughts together in a somewhat coherent form. It got its message across, but I don’t think it left a long lasting impression. It didn’t sink its teeth into me the way that I thought it would. The Substance: 6.5-7/10

This movie did an excellent job elevating the grotesque. I agree that it's probably not an "eating" for most people. Also something to point out is the metaphor about our relationship with our older selves when we’re young. When we live large, drink, do drugs, what have you; we’re decreasing quality of life for our older selves. But we don’t care because we’re not there yet. I think that’s why even though, as the shady company keeps pointing out, she is one person; she feels like two different people when her consciousness transfers. Because in a way it is two different people, just like we become different people as we age. Our priorities change, and so Elizabeth’s and Sue’s priorities are radically different when in their respective body. I think that’s the core metaphor of the movie.

I honestly feel otherwise. I thought that the art direction of the movie was amazing, but the movie was extremly bad written and full of plot holes. I understand the gore side of it causes a reaction in people, but if you remove that from the movie, the rest is extremly shallow. How can people say that the movie is very well written when is completely filled with nonsense premises? - What is the point of creating a younger and better version of yourself if you don't get to have the complete control and the full experience of that body? - The substance box has almost any instruction. How did she knew where exactly to inject herself with the activator? How did she knew where was the specific site in the body of the matrix to collect the fluid? - I am not even going to critic the process of replicating a full adult body inside of another adult body because I understand that is not the point of the movie. Although, as a scientist, I think that they could have put a little more effort in trying to create a reasonable explanation for all that process. People were fascinated by the gore scenes. In reality, if you remove that, the movie would have been a complete failure due to the bad writing and shallow critique of how celebs deal with aging and the standards that these industries impose on women. To me the movie was bad written, boring and long with lots of moments that didnt make any contribution to the plot.
@Technique-kj2bpАй бұрын
"How can people say that the movie is very well written when is completely filled with nonsense premises" Because the plot is based on a thought experiment. It's not supposed to make logical real world sense. Absolutely love this movie, well deserved best screenplay in Cannes Film Festival, the story is quite simple even cliche dare I say, but the way of telling the story using shocking images, visceral, bloody and really gore settings just give people a shock of how sarcastic sometimes we view women's bodies and how we are accepting aging...

If they ever want to make a proper Resident Evil film, they need to hire this director. The practical creature fx and body horror are beyond expectations. Some of the best I've ever seen in any film. Whoever did the monster fx deserves all the awards.

@@anitaknight3915 Girl, for REAL! 😆 Especially because even though I’ve grown up watching horror, gore has never been my fave. 🥴 I might be getting queasy even WITH fasting! 🤣

My friend mentioned to me in the parking lot how the movie was LITERALLY about balance and how the movie was completely unbalanced intentionally by the director this movie deserves an Oscar right now

I was disappointed. I expected it to deal with the theme in an interesting way but it just had nothing to say. How she was obsessed with her looks was just ridiculous and primitive. At the setup I could predict the whole movie. Nothing surprising happened. Everything was over the top, characters were unbelievable. And how no one even noticed the monster in the end made no sense. It just kept going and going. Btw, funny how all the disgusting eating scenes were about dead animals. It wouldn't work with a cucumber. It really shows how messed up it is to eat other animals

I’m a horror/ gore fan who’s seen all of the Saw movies, Eli Roth’s movies, Terrifier 1 and 2, Martyrs, Slither, the list is endless.. This one here truly made me feel unsettled. Mad props to the director for making me skip dinner today 🤮😵

I watched it yesterday night and it was really incredible. Such beautiful and poetic cinematography, chilling yet energized score, and such strong moments! I think this movie nails having the comedy, seriousness, and suspense without diminishing any qualities. The practical effects were outstanding and though some of the CGI wasn’t the most realistic to the trained eye, it was still incredible! I can’t wait until this movie’s end monster reaches the general horror movie audience

As a man who is incredibly self conscious about his body, I really liked this movie. It is targeted more so towards women, but it’s very true about how obsessed we are to look as good as possible. I see it as a critique of not only society, but plastic surgery and medicines to slow down “aging” which can result in horrible side effects. Ultimately, it’s all about being happy with yourself and how you can maintain your looks in safe and natural ways, while still accepting change

what i love about this movie is how well rounded the main characters are. Elizabeth (older woman) is not just a victim she is also a perpetrator in this unjust system. She is just as vain and willing to participate in a system that harms women (and men too) so long as she gets her spotlight. By the end of the movie it is apparent her heart was never in the right place, but you just can't help but feel empathy for her as well. Even Sue I felt a lot of disgust but also empathy in the fact she was never asked to be created she's kind of just along for the ride.

I love the premise and cast involved but I really dislike body horror so I'm out. I am happy movies like this being are still getting made and offering something different though. It's just not for me.

Well, if you stop watching before the LAST transfomation (last half-hour), the movie shows surprisingly little gore and works more off the acting and clever script. The last sequence tho... it goes into stratosphere of disgusting.
