The fact of the matter is the writers were confused about what the genre of the film should be. One minute it’s a crime thriller and then the next it’s a supernatural psychological type deal. You gotta pick your poison or things get confusing quickly. My personal take is they should have canned the supernatural “the dolls make them do it” tripe because it just didn’t work and made things feel silly. The writers in my opinion should have just went down the “Seven” based route where Longlegs is mentally perturbed and uses means of indoctrination / manipulation in order to get people to do his bidding. You get to a similar conclusion but that story would be a lot more believable.

Perkins’ has said he just liked the sound of the name: Longlegs means nothing, just like this film. Think about the idea behind this sluggish, colorless film: a creep builds creepy-looking dolls that are supposedly “possessed by the devil” in the form of a humming metal ball, then a random stranger who claims to be from some church gives the doll away to parents of a child born on the 14th, in order for Dad to slaughter everyone, rinse and repeat. In what part of the country in the 90’s were parents accepting w/o question such a bizarre “prize” and not telling Mother Mennonite there to get the hell off their porch? There was a germ of a good movie here, but like The Black Phone it’s buried under a mountain of stupid implausibilities, and religious mumbo-jumbo. Compare this drab film to Prisoners, or a Wire in the Blood episode that featured a religion-themed plot, there’s a marked difference in quality and suspense.

It wasn't ''A Scariest film of the Decade'', But it was definitely an interesting watch, I would definitely recommend it to people who are more into crime/thriller genre, because this is definitely not a horror film. It has horror elements but it wasn't a full blown horror movie from start to finish. There was some unsettling and creepy parts but I never felt truly scared. Nic Cage and Maika Monroe were both great, the actress who plays Lee's mother in the film was fantastic, she was absolutely creepy. But it definitely a type of movie that you need to see twice, it demands that. So I am definitely going to be seeing again but this time alone at home. I just came out of the screening couple of minutes ago, so the movie is very fresh in my mind but I just... I don't know, I need to sit with this movie for a bit and think how I feel about it, because there were stuff I really, really liked and then there were some other stuff that I would put under a question mark. That's why I think it necessary to see it twice. I can say that I think this film should have been either longer or a mini-series, a 1 hour 40 minute runtime is not enough to tell such a story I feel like, there is quite a lot that is left to viewer's imagination, a very ambiguous ending. I don't hate the ending but I do wish we got a conclusion, it felt like we will be getting Longlegs 2 or something... but either way, I can't decide fully on how I feel about this film, I will say I did like it more than I did not like it, but I don't want to go in the details because I am not 100% sure if even the things I did not like I truly don't like you know? But it definitely was an experience that I overall enjoyed but at the same let down by few things, I did feel like it needed to be longer at the very least and the jumpscares were weak... absolutely weak to me. But I will still recommend for anybody to go check it out for yourself, especially like I said before if you are fan of these type of movies (Silence of the Lambs, Seven or Zodiac) then this could be a good time for you. I will say this, this film is definitely also not on par with Silence of the Lambs or Seven in terms of filmmaking, storytelling and etc etc... It definitely pays homage to those films but at the same time brings an interesting unique twist to the movie which I did really like. So yeah, go check it out. I feel like this movie is going to be very divisive, some people will love it some people will like it and some will straight out hate it, it definitely a more of A24 type movie. Also, Nic Cage's performance was definitely something... I did not know how to approach his character... but eventually he did get under my skin but I can see some people straight out laugh at this character because of how ridiculous he is in this. Even I smiled couple of times because Nic Cage was having a lot of fun in this one, oh my oh my... He was chewing every scene, the interrogation scene definitely is going to be a memorable scene from the movie. Gosh, I went on a huge rant.. I need to chill, but at the moment it very hard for me to rate this, I need to wait a bit until I can truly comprehend what I just saw. Oh, I forgot... the sound design and cinematography is chef's kiss.
@paulemery73535 ай бұрын
I agree. I wanted to be so scared and I was but probably anticipating stuff that didnt happen. It was very vey creepy and the sound made me jump more than the imagery. I found the satanic plot to use others to do stuff with a doll a little overly complex but maybe that's just me. Dolls are so overused in horror or whatever this was and it detracted for me. Cage was enough

Thank you so much for the spoiler-free review! I usually keep myself as much in the dark as possible before seeing a new movie (especially by a filmmaker I like; Osgood Perkins has been on my radar since The Blackcoat's Daughter), but Longlegs has me so hyped that I decided to watch your review. I found it most interesting that you say it has parallels to Cure, as that's one of my favorite horror films ever and it has such a uniquely surreal & suffocating atmosphere and aesthetic. Judging from the trailers, I was expecting comparisons to films like Seven and Silence Of The Lambs, but Cure came so out of left field that, coupled with your enthusiasm for this film, has my interest in it even more piqued. I usually go to matinees to save money, but this is one I definitely want to see at night.

Here’s the thing though, it’s not lol lotta people are going based purely on the marketing but the audience score to this point is only 65 percent which isn’t high . I don’t get the hype. Everything about LongLegs was a horror cliche. From uncovered windows at night and living in the woods in isolation, to stupid decisions like walking out at night when she sees someone outside - rather than staying tf in like a normal person. Almost EVERYthing was a cliche that we’ve seen a million times. Even the ‘distraught/unwell FBI lady’ character herself has been done many times before. The cinematography was nothing new for the genre, neither were the scenes themselves. I liked the scenes, don’t get me wrong. But that’s just because I like a lot of typical horror scenes. The point is, pretty much nothing about the movie was any more interesting than most others in the genre. The ending, if not predictable, wasn’t all that shocking either. To someone who’s in love with horror movies and/or hasn’t seen many before, this would certainly come off intriguing. That’s almost the only compliment I could give. You have to TRY to be immersed in order to be drawn to the plots. It doesn’t demand your attention on its own. The only reason I watched all of it was because I wanted to be proven wrong all along. Oh well. Like everyone, I know how it feels to absolutely love a movie but hear someone say “there’s nothing interesting about it”, but I just wanna say that I did try to like it:( Not initially, cuz you gotta let the movie carry you, instead of forcing yourself onto it. But it definitely needed trying to *keep* watching right around halfway through. And actually over half of it was extra & could’ve been removed without any significant impact. It was about 20-30 min worth of story at most.

It was good but honestly it felt like it didn’t execute a finale as good as it could’ve been. Everything was 10/10 until it ends and then it feels as if it was end too soon; like there was much more horror that could’ve been achieved so a little bit disappointing in that sense. A good example I can give is the hereditary movie. The film develops and unfolds and it escalates more and more and the it reaches its absolute peak and it leaves you feeling a satisfying sense of overwhelm shocked and fear. This movie long legs was on the right track similar to that recipe of hereditary but it ended before it could’ve been at it’s peak. It’s a film that unfortunately doesn’t reach that peak. Aside from that critic it was very well filmed and beautiful and I really loved it, loved it so much that I’m disappointed it didn’t reach further

Nothing.... What do these cyphers mean? Nothing... Lee decodes these cyphers in record time whereas the FBI has come up with nothing over 20 years. It turns out LongLegs has been living in the mother's basement, why? Don't know. For how long? Don't know. How do they know where longlegs is to arrest him? Don't know. Why does Longlegs have to use dolls? Don't know. Out of all the family he kills, why does he suddenly agree to save Lee by making a deal with her mum? Don't know. Why does Longlegs kill himself? Don't know. Why does he wear all white? Don't know. Why is he even called longlegs? Don't know. Why does this film even exist??? Don't know. The list just goes on and on, and I haven't even gone into Lees psychic powers that later on in the film is reduced to just knowing things.... I'm not sure why so many people think that this film was great, but hay that's just my personal opinion. 🤷♂️

Question 1: Because she's in a state of shock which is clearly indicated by her hyperventilation. She still catches the culprit tho, so why did that even bother you. Question 2: Because she's invested in the case and clearly doesn't want to lose it. Which is likely what would happen if her superior knew that the killer is starting to target her. Also clearly indicated by how she acts after getting questioned by said superior. Question 3: She doesn't really have time to call for back up in that situation either (besides, she knows her mother just shot the person and obviously would rather resolve the conflict peacefully). After confronting her about it, she loses consciousness immediately afterwards. Longlegs lives in the basement because it's the perfect hiding spot + it's literally the house of his accomplice. Where else would he live? Doesn't look like he's earning any money to pay rent lmao. And he lives there since protagonist's 9th birthday. How did the police know where Longlegs was to arrest him? He's quite the noticeable fella, hard to miss that dude. Also the convenience store before establishes that he's known as the local "weirdo". He agrees to spare Lee because he needs an accomplice to get his dolls into the houses of his victims. And obviously no one would trust a freak like him, let alone letting him get close enough to any children. Why does he kill himself? Idk, why does Hannibal Lecter kill and eat people? Do you really need to know that detail, imho it doesn't matter. Why does he call himself Longlegs? The question is answered immediately within the first 10 minutes of the movie's opening btw. Pretty much anything you brought up so far is actually answered in the film or heavily hinted on, so maybe that helps.

@@BruceWayne-wh4of ok, if you say so 🤷♂️ I'm glad you liked it, but I still think it was rubbish and totally unbelievable. Maika Monroe was good in the film "It Follows" in this film she must have been told to act like a wooden pencil 😂

Hmmm... You seem to have a grudge against it. I didn't know anything about this movie except hearing that it was about a serial killer and that Nicholas Cage was in it. I didn't have high hopes because I think he can be too much. Here...he was used well and this was a great movie. I will watch it several times over the years because it's that good. It's 2024's Se7en for me...even though that was a better movie, this is up there for me.
