I think it’s vitally important to understand that Sue is not the antagonist. She does not destroy Elisabeth. She *is* Elisabeth. Her behavior- we can infer- reflects how Elisabeth behaved in her original youth. Her treatment of Elisabeth’s body reflects how Elisabeth feels about her own aging self. They have the same sad and shallow but deeply understandable values. The movie keeps telling us that Elisabeth and Sue are one because viewers who don’t understand that they are one will miss the point of the movie: *Elisabeth destroys herself* because she hates herself. And she hates herself because the standards she is held to as a star and as a woman are literally impossible to meet for more than a fraction of her life, if at all.

But they are both a different people. This is made apparent when Sue wakes up after being injected with Elisabeth's blood later on. While they are the same person, they both have their own personality and consciousness. Sue represents her self-centeredness, the total opposite of Elisabeth.

i think my favorite part is that Elisasue loved herself. Elisasue had the confidence that neither Elisabeth or Sue had. Elisasue put that dress on even though it didn't fit, put the earrings on even though she didn't have a place for them, burnt her hair and just shrugged it off. The monster that everyone was afraid of was a woman without self-hatred, who felt beautiful with all her flaws.

It now makes sense that blood attack is her symbolic rejection of all the vices of mass media that made her into the "monster". Shes now in a separate existence, doing what truly loved with a beginning she now knows she wants.

@modernamami5861
@modernamami5861 2 ай бұрын
@@rinzzzzie718I think that part of the movie is meant to illustrate the “You can’t escape from yourself” part. By this point Lizzy’s inability to see that she is both Elisabeth and Sue - that she is one person jumping between two bodies - has resulted in her developing a sort of split personality. This scene is like the two personalities fighting for dominance, and Sue wins because Lizzy wants her to win. Lizzy hates herself as Elisabeth and she wants to just be Sue. By killing Elisabeth and only having Sue left, Lizzy thinks she’s finally free of the parts of herself she considers to be ugly and worthless. But she soon realizes that she needs Elisabeth to survive; Sue starts to fall apart without her. Elisabeth is the anchor - she’s the substance. Elisabeth has the family, the history, the hometown, the relationships, the personality. Sue is empty. She’s just a husk that Lizzy put on to feel young again. And without Elisabeth, Sue is forced to come to terms with the fact that she’s still very much Lizzy, regardless of what body she’s in. Because now Sue isn’t enough. And once she realizes that, she immediately tries to activate again to get a “better” version of herself. It’s a vicious cycle. I think Sue’s rapid decay is meant to show that even if she could stay and live as Sue, she’s gonna age and end up in the same place all over again anyway. She can’t escape herself. She can either accept who she is; flaws and all, or she can destroy herself.

@saccharinescenery
@saccharinescenery 2 ай бұрын
@@DanteRU0312It's a much more visceral visualization of a metaphor for how self hatred can and will rip you apart from the inside. There are themes that resonate with addiction as well, as the literal substance is a drug to make Elisabeth feel "perfect", and its effects are extremely literal and personified in this film via Sue. There's a lot of layers and symbolism to this movie, which makes me love it, personally. There is a reason they repeat that mantra: "You Are One.". The movie does respect its themes quite well, albeit very extreme and literal in its presentation.

Well Sue is the "bad guy" in that she is the personification of all of the toxic priorities we place on ourselves and in our lives. And these often do cause us to do the things she does, like heavily prioritizing self over others. I am curious what the film is trying to say about Elizabeth effectively choosing the same life path the 2nd time around.
@daviddyck3724
@daviddyck3724 2 ай бұрын
it's hardly just "the men" who perpetuate this system of ageism and beauty standards. Women themselves are perfectly content to judge each other according to unrealistic standards, which I thought the film presented very well. Elizabeth was never happy with herself until she was Sue, similarly Sue looked down on Elizabeth. Audiences, TV viewers all are guilty of perpetuating these toxic habits, hence the ending of the film where Elizasue blasts them all with blood 'they all have blood on their hands'. Neither gender is innocent.

@@daviddyck3724 Sadly this is where I think the movie suffers from a narrative perspective. Its visual storytelling and its symbolic storytelling seem to be at odds in many situations. It says a lot that Elisabeth doesn’t seem to have anyone in her life that TRULY loves her… not envies her, not admires her, but just loves and cares about her wellbeing (no one even asks how she’s doing). We hear her speak so little, because that’s not what the people want. She’s gotten so used to being just a pretty face to the point that she can’t handle any other reality. I love the choice to cast Demi specifically because she is GORGEOUS. I’ve seen her in interviews for this movie and her skin literally is GLOWING. I think this really paints a powerful message that you can be a millionaire superstar that looks better than 95% of every other person your age and STILL be made to feel inadequate. Elizabeth WAS gorgeous, but she was also 50 years old and there’s NOTHING wrong with looking 50 years old. Culture and society really warps how we see ourselves, and denies the inescapable reality of aging. It’s natural, it’s beautiful the whole way through and no one should be made to feel like they are inferior for no other reason than existing for a certain period of time.

I don’t know if you read where Demi stated that she had to meet with Fargeat 6 times before she got the role. She gave her her instant #1 New York Times bestselling book “Inside Out” to read. That’s what sealed the deal. She has lived this life personally as an A-List celebrity who was once the highest paid actress in the industry. She turned 40 during Charlie’s Angels. “They didn’t know what to do with me” Demi has said. I’m a lifelong fan of her career. This is definitely her comeback movie. Although the Academy does not like body horror, she needs to be nominated. Just play the bathroom scene where she’s getting ready for her date & she will win the Oscar. I have not been this excited for a movie since “Requiem for a Dream”. There were quite a few references to it throughout the movie. Margaret Qualley honestly has a great aggressive scream. I still feel like there's a hint (or sound) of "horror movie victime" in her high pitches but she sounded amazingly frustrated in her screams here. I am considering her as a scream queen here, but a diff definition of the term

I truly hope certain people watch this movie and really absorb its message. So many people are so shallow and vain, but the worst is when they're mean. And they think that they can be mean just because someone is famous, so they harp on them, say mean things, shame, to the point where the person just can't be themselves or even human, they have to do procedures even though they're already perfect, they ruin their bodies to fit into an impossible standard. Especially as someone who used to be very in touch with kpop and read a lot of korean comments online, those people are too obsessed. They judge even the shape of a knee, the size of a head, how large an ankle is. Things people can't even control or change! And whenever someone points out how shallow this is, they always justify things with "well, they're idols, they're celebrities, they should've expected this...", when those idols and celebrities actually start in the industry as little kids bc god forbid we idolize older people! We need idols who are still losing their first teeth to dance in front of us and apply botox even when they don't need it! Idk this subject has always infuriated me and even though when projects like this come out and people get all critical about its message, on daily life no one truly wants to commit to be a nice person. It's as if it's impossible for someone to not make a snarky comment about one's appearance or age. And if you don't follow suit, you're made fun of. Anyways, as pissed as I am, I'm grateful that you guys posted this. I can't handle gore and knew I couldn't watch the full thing, so watching censored reactions was the only way 😅 thank you!

South Korea's beauty standards are monstrous, that's for sure. Are you aware of the 4B feminist movement over there? If not, I suggest you take a look. But overall, my point of mentioning it is that I'd hope that the 4B movement would adopt the ideology of rejecting those insane beauty standards for women in the country. It ruins women's lives, especially when their appearance is a commodity for men and not for women's own sake.

I feel like what people don’t get of the moment when Elisabeth and Sue become separate or conscious at the same time, it represents the dynamics of a “celebrity”, that is their public face, and their true self, they usually shouldn’t be so different, as your public persona you would at least hide your private life, but here… Elisabeth tried so hard to not be her, that she made it, she preferred her public persona over her own self, she showed a face to the public (through Sue), that got sooo far from her true self, that there was nothing left of her, and that happens in real life to real celebrities, both faces could go around as two and no one would even consider them to be related, because she wasn’t herself anymore, she lost herself

There’s a part in this movie where Elizabeth talks about how she was selfish and egotistical when she was younger. That’s one reason why Sue might have been so antagonistic when she was created. She might physically embody the best traits of Elizabeth, but not the best mental and behavioral ones.

The irony is that women in Hollywood in the real world would be paying ridiculous amounts of money just to do the crazy stuff and surgeries just to do what Demi’s character is doing just to look younger and beautiful, Madonna and the Kardashian ladies would definitely be that example

But you know what's funny? Kim Kardashian, whose large butt became a signature feature of hers, is gone now. Do you know why? Because Brazilian Butt-Lifts are more affordable and the procedure is spreading across the common people. The elite absolutely HATE when things they've done to themselves become popular among the "common" folk, so she removed hers. It's possible that the same will happen to lip fillers as well! That's why women should NEVER strive to attain the procedures/looks that famous people have, because they'll immediately toss them out and it'll become "outdated". It's horrendous.

I figured in the end where Sue shows up as a monster is because of brain damage from the substance so to her child like mind this is a solution that will work but Elizabeth is also part of the monster and it might appear that suffers less brain damage. I came to that conclusion because she so deformed on the outside, imagine what her organs are like. She must have brain damage. The entire thing is bizarre but what an amazing movie.
