I think the idea with tomo not beating the ass of every dude who hits on her or gropes her is that she's unfamiliar with what is happening or how to deal with it. She knows she could beat them up but she's in shock that it's even happening to her, she also does not seem to be that emotionally/mentally strong (which is explored in other aspects of the series aswell). Jun who does see her as a woman, is nearly as tough as she is and has a sense of justice then gets his chance to step up. Fight, Flight, and Freeze response is different for everyone and can vary on situation. Edit: 3 days and a thousand plus likes, thanks everyone.

Exactly! I've only read the manga so I don't know if the anime's there yet, but I remember a conversation where both Tomo and Jun admit that they would be too nervous to fight back if the opposite sex comes onto them like that. This makes sense when you think about their backgrounds. Jun and Tomo grew up learning multiple martial arts and it's clear that they value physical prowess as a means to solve problems which is something they get from Gorou. This shapes their mindsets towards certain situations and can lead to misinterpretations, especially our airhead Tomo. For example, she immediately assumed those two girls wanted to fight her even when it was clear to Misuzu that they just wanted to talk. They are used to situations involving physical violence (admittedly a strong word in this case) and likely don't completely understand the idea of someone hurting them without throwing a punch. It's a completely different type of assault for them which understandably can make them feel confused on how to handle it.

something to add is that when she began to regain her composure and is about to punch those creeps, she is scared of looking unfeminine in front of Jun. during the beach episode, If you pay attention she was holding back on punching the creep. in a way, Jun treating her like a boy has made her feel self-conscious about masculine behavior.

"Regular guy"? My man Jun-bo is no regular guy; even the Yakuza is afraid of the mere name of Tomo's father, but when he went to ask him to date her, and her father said that he needed first to defeat him, he was like "I know I can't beat you, but it doesn't mean I'm giving up Tomo"... Even my fiancée is in love of that man and she's not into many Anime characters... He's like a Max Steel who doesn't do drugs... And is only 16 years old...xD

Jun is such a real male character. I think both he and Tomo know they can’t stop this train. They can’t deny the attraction and know their relationship WILL change, but Jun runs away because he doesn’t want to lose his best friend, and also, he feels insecure. Even though he has been working so hard and has become so strong, he wonders if he will ever measure up to Tomo. They’re a perfect match and he supports her in all the right ways, but Tomo being such a giga-chad in that she will even turn mean girls into friends, I can see why he looks up to her so much.

I think Tomo being in shock at molesters is not that out of character. It's consistent that she also has a hard time seeing herself as a girl, especially a hot girl, that can be the object of someone else's desire. She is kind of oblivious too. Because it's not someone coming to traditionally attack her as an opponent, which is the type she's used to handling with ease. So she doesn't attack immediately because that throws her off.

Omg is this a romance anime I'd actually want to watch? A fleshed out relationship that isn't based on initial looks? One where a tomboy isn't forced to go all girly to "level up" when it obviously makes them uncomfortable? An unwillingness to date for fear of losing a longtime friendship because of mutual respect and a genuine love for one another? Alright, let's give this a go.
@364-unbirthdays8
@364-unbirthdays8 Жыл бұрын
You'll actually appreciate the little twist they do about the "tomboy wants to be girly" trope! It's the first time I've seen a story do that twist and it makes SO much sense and I really appreciate it. SPOILERS IN CASE YOU ARE CURIOUS . . . . . . . . . The twist being that Tomo initially started "being girly" because it was the advice that her friend, Misuzu, gave her before Misuzu realized how serious she was about Jun. That's why Tomo isn't always super comfortable with the idea (only caving when Misuzu says it'll "definitely make Jun notice her"), she's doing it because she genuinely loves her friend and wants to take Misuzu's advice. Later on in the series they make note of how Misuzu telling Tomo this was NOT the right move because it made Tomo believe that Jun would ONLY notice her if she changed herself to be girlier... which isn't true, because Jun already loves her as herself! Misuzu even apologizes for it, and later on when Tomo expresses interest in dressing up for Jun, Misuzu is worried that Tomo is just forcing herself, but Tomo says that she simply wants to look good in front of the boy she loves. It's cute and very wholesome!

My favorite thing about this anime isn't even the romance. It's the friendship between the girls. They have such a damn nice dynamic that you really don't get in a lot of other anime. They feel real and they hurt each other but they also trust and love each other. I just love the emphasis on friendship in this anime. Both between jun and tomo, and all friends involved.
@giboit.

Tomo stated that just because she is strong doesn't mean that she is mentally/emotionally able to handle all kinds of situations. So those scenes where Junichi saves Tomo from things like getting groped or getting hit on by strangers (despite her technically being more than capable of dealing with those issues with her strength) aren't there "just to make Junichi a hero". But rather to show that she isn't perfect and that she can get scared or uncomfortable with those situations just like any other girl. Junichi actually says to her that he knows that she's more than capable of dealing with it and that's why he doesn't even feel good (or worthy) of receiving her appreciation for it. Because he thinks that she could've easily deal with it but he doesn't understand that it's not nearly as easy for her. Which is why Tomo got angry when he refused to be thanked by her after he saved her.
@Ventiwings
@Ventiwings Жыл бұрын
I think tomo being seen as "helpless" during those situations (the unsoliciated sexual touching) is more that she is very capable in a fight but no one has tried that on her when she wore clothes familiar to her. During those events above, she's out of her element, her usual mindset, so her reactions are slow. I think this is less so jun could be seen as a "hero" but for him to slowly acknowledge that, yes, his best friend is still just a girl. She's doing all these things she's not comfortable with, but she's TRYING. What's jun doing while he's watching his best friend struggle? Nothing. He acknowledges that he's being stupid for not confronting the actual situation, but he does his best to try to circumvent tackling the issue. It's definitely not as deep as what i'm making it out to be, but i also feel it isn't portrayed to make jun look like a good guy like how other romance media does it
@364-unbirthdays8
@364-unbirthdays8 Жыл бұрын
I agree, and want to add some stuff to your comment! It was also done to show that even Tomo has moments where she feels fear. She was genuinely scared and uncomfortable and wasn't sure what the right course of action was. And this WASN'T shown as a bad thing! Tomo KNOWS it's normal for her to feel scared, and she's not embarrassed or ashamed of it, and even makes sure that Jun knows how appreciative she was of it! If you've poisoned your brain with trashy YA "fake girlboss" fiction where the girl talks down to a guy for even TRYING to help her out, you can imagine how refreshing this was to me. Tomo is strong, but she's not invincible, especially not when she's flustered and out of her comfort zone. Which brings me to my second point... that Jun doesn't think Tomo ever gets scared. He practically hero-worships her, thinking she can do no wrong and has no weaknesses. He tries to APOLOGIZE for helping her, because he assumed that she could have handled it all by herself and that what he did was just unnecessary. This interaction helped to break that mindset of his (which is absolutely the #1 thing holding them back) which was sorely needed. In the manga, actually, Tomo asks Jun what HE would do if a bunch of girls starting harassing HIM, and when he freezes up thinking about it, Tomo points out that it's only natural for people, no matter how strong they are, to have things they are fearful of/uncomfortable with and that it's okay. Tldr the scene is actually wholesome and important to both their characters!

@@364-unbirthdays8 Not just that, but even if people may appear to be strong physically, it doesn't mean their mind can handle something mentally damaging. It's why big and burly men can still be abused - There's more ways to assault someone aside from physical, and sometimes even the most physically capable people don't know how to mentally process a more mental/psychological assault. It's also just a strange situation altogether. Tomo is usually surrounded by decent people - People with basic respect. I myself wouldn't have immediately resorted to hitting someone that did that as an instinct - Whether it was not to cause a commotion, or because I'd be afraid that this person would eventually have the upper hand even though it's within my right to fight back. It all comes down to fear.
@judaihyuga
@judaihyuga Жыл бұрын
@@364-unbirthdays8 Exactly this. Tomo isn't supposed to be some dollar store Mary-Sue that can handle every situation and gets pissy with guy that tries to help her. She's a person. A young woman and a tomboy that isn't used to guys hitting on her or unwanted advances. It's such a foreign thing to her that isn't sure how she's supposed to handle it in the moment. Obviously, she can look back on that incident and think "I probably could've just punched him" but that's only because hindsight is 20/20. In the moment she starts to panic. The reason I, and many others, love Tomo is because she's flawed and relatable, and needs the people around her to help her. Whether it's Jun stopping someone from making unwanted advances or Misuzu straight up terrifying some stupid punk into line, they do the things that she can't to make up for her shortcomings. It's a lesson that certain movies and tv series desperately need to learn, that there's nothing wrong with a protagonist needing other people. If your protag can do everything by themself and other characters only exist to remind how cool they are, they become boring very quickly.

I fell in love with this from the first episode and low how it explores teenage romance in a similar fashion to Kaguya-sama, namely the fact that teenagers are idiots when it comes to their feelings, only where Kaguya is more about the pride and insecurities of the main leads, Tomo-chan is more about the fear of the unknown, of a relationship you like changing into something that might not work out, granted that's mainly on Junichiro's end but it's still great.

To comment on Jun saving Tomo coming from a fighter girl, it makes sense. When you're a girl who can solve her issues with violence, yet still being a mushy girl on the inside is conflicting. You can tell whenever she says she could fight back but can't understand why, it's a fear that holds her back. Not to mention having someone else come and fight for her is okay to me. It feels really relieving to have someone else burden your issues like Jun taking care of fights she never had to involve herself with. As for the beach episode? My man Jun was on Big Booby Watch XD

In the manga.... (light spoilers) . . . . . . The scene is actually followed by Tomo asking Jun what his reaction would be if a bunch of girls started crowding around him and harassing him. He actually freezes up (something he does later on in the story when Carol pushes him down as a joke) and Tomo says that there will always be some situations where we will be unable to move/respond properly. I love this scene because it shows that freezing up, feeling fear over something that can seem trivial isn't something to be ashamed of, and that you are NOT weak for being unable to act in those sorts of situations! Yeah, Tomo can punch a guy, but that doesn't mean there aren't things that scare her or make her hesitant to act- and she knows it. Which is why she sincerely tries to get Jun to understand how much he helped her, and how thankful she is for the fact he stepped in to help. (Also, this is super refreshing if you've read/watched too many YA books/shows that have the girl get mad at the guy for helping her out)... It also helps to tear down Jun's image of Tomo as an invincible hero, which is definitely one of the reasons why they haven't gotten together yet. All-around a really sweet scene.

Soooo, wanted to say about all the rescue scenes. I may dig too deep, but here's my analisis: 1) It makes perfect sense for Tomo to freeze up. Cause being groped like this is scary, and even if you know what to do, you can just become paralized with fear. And Tomo explains it to Jun with asking what would he do if he was molested by girls and Jun aslo freezes up (it was proven true when Carol pined him down). There really are moments where you can do nothing. 2) Those scenes make sense for character development. Jun does see Tomo as a girl, but as overpowered one. He thinks that she can do everything on her own, that she is much stronger than him and doesn't actually need his help. And yeah, she could beat those mfs up, but she also needs someone who would take battle instead of her time to time. There's this thin line when you should treat someone as capable and don't underestimate them, but also give a helping hand and make sure that there isn't too much on their shoulders. 3) Two of molesters scenes (beach and fireworks) were on their kinda date. So Tomo didn't want to fight because it would make her look "less feminine" and efforts of her friends or mom to make her seem more girly would be vain. 4) Tomo would handle those situation more violent since she has trouble holding herself back. With three molester scenes we see Jun learn to rely less on violence. Whith mf in the bus Tomo had to hold Jun back so he wouldn't staight up kill this mf (kinda justified tbh). In the beach he just scares the guy. And at the festival he just takes Tomo and leaves. Also the last two show that he became more comfortable with the idea of Tomo being his girlfriend. 'Cause on the beach he reacted to being called Tomo's boyfriend with agression, says it's a problem if people think so. But at the festival he either didn't hear this comment or just was ok with it. 5) Tomo really enjoys being saved. So why the f no? Strong girls still want someone to take care of them. Gosh, i wrote too much....

I had one guy friend who I ended up dating and it turned out that he was using me as an escape from his baby mama (he didn't tell me that he was already with someone else) and I regretted just not staying friends with him cause we did work better as friends rather than romantic partners.

this anime is how I wished they handled relationships, they are point blank, but for one reason or another, the people don't date for a reason like in Danmachi, there are plenty of women after Bell, but the fact he likes Ais is his main goal, if they changed a few thing's up, the relationships would be more stable

To be honest. The tomo chan harassment isn't even nearly close to the manga where carol literally sexually assaults jun. And the worst part is that they played for laugh and treated it as a joke. Which is disgusting to me since i'm a guy that has been physically assaulted by girl

@@aikikaname6508 Its been a while since I've read the manga but I remember the scene being the same. She doesn't strip down or anything more intense. If anything she makes more physical contact overall which may have been cut for time. It definitely was sexual harassment, but I don't think it was played off any differently from the events with Tomo or even the two girls that had to deal with the Sempai. Carol acknowledges it was wrong even before doing it and explains herself to Jun; Jun shows just how uncomfortable that is for a guy, Jun runs away and has to seek comfort from Tomo just like how Tomo had to have him help when she was groped; Carol apologizes and there is a joke made with Misuzu thinking back on it just like the joke that occurred with Jun saying Tomo shouldn't wear a skirt; after the episode it isn't brought up again just like Tomo's groping with things just resetting. I can understand it hitting OP harder because of it being closer to home but I do not see how it was treated any differently from the 3 incidents with Tomo, the 1 with the gyaru harassed by the sempai, and then Misuzu getting harassed by that same sempai. There are multiple instances of assault, harassment, and terrorizing in this series that get brushed off because there was a savior there to then transition it back to comedy. Misaki straight up thinks Carol was moments for getting r'd, and that's supposed to just be funny. So yea, some of this author's darker works bleed in a little bit but the laughs fade them away.

I think what makes this rom-com work excellent is the clever twist on the premise. They could’ve just played it straight and done another glow-up/makeover story or they could’ve made Jun truly oblivious where Tomo would really have to try to get him to notice her. However, the twist is that Tomo is already “perfect” from the beginning. Not perfect but as healthy, kind and loving as a girl can be at her age. Jun is already in love with her, but he’s conflicted when it comes to their great friendship morphing into something else. Other guys already see her as attractive. Gundo knows she’s plenty cute and that Jun likes her. Her ploy is just to get her to spend more time with her, doing things she likes. As opposed to the rougher activities Tomo tends to prefer and where she feels left out. If anything, the story is about other people becoming better by being around her and also about Tomo coming of age and navigating all the BS that comes with growing up.

10:51 I think this was a realistic depiction of being a a girl, strong as you may be when something as shocking as getting harassed as a teenager happens you feel stuck. There are all these rules you’re taught, don’t get too angry, you can’t just punch out people even if they’re wrong, don’t over react, that kind of stuff. So you’re stuck there trying to figure out what to do in the new scary unpleasant situation, and sometimes you freeze even if usually you know what to do. She’s also no super used to being seen as a girl so it makes even more sense for her to get flustered and confused in these situations. Even if they are sometimes random damsel in distress moments I think these are pretty realistic reactions and unfortunately a lot of times it helps to have a big scary dude around when you’re caught off guard like this

about the groping incident: in romance there's always a demonstration of value, why should we care about the love interest as much as our protagonist. i think it was a pretty good demonstration of value. our guy Jun keeps other guys accountable of their gross behavior and it gives us reason to understand what Tomo sees in him.

I'm not gonna lie. This breakdown kinda hit home. I think back to my best friend and me. Years ago, before he came out as Trans. We had been friends for 6 years. The.....(not sure if I should use this or not during this context but going to so I can get this out) girl was honestly the only person who I hanged out with in college. And while we were just friends for a while, I found I had feelings for her after some time. But things never really lined up for me. Even try and ask. But after a while, I just dropped things. Then, for one reason or another. Near the end of our more recent relationships (like 2 years and change, We had moments. Moments were clearly something that was changing. I don't know what caused it. But we were getting closer in a way that was really different. Maybe it's because our relationships were both hitting the metaphorical wall soon in one way or another (quick advice, long distance can work but you need to both make effort or at least have plans to see each other at some point to make it work). And I'm not gonna lie. Both had felt it. But we both put up a wall to keep us from going further, both of us at least for now. I remember the day I basically got confirmation that we both felt something. It was during an anime con. We both gorlt fucking hammer. And when we sat down and talked about it. We both knew that we could be in a relationship with each other. But we are both pretty much hot messes right now and probably shouldn't. Especially since it was only a few months (i think it was 4 or 5) after we both broke up with our partners. We didn't want to take a leap like that yet cuz we valued our friendship too much. So we left it at that. We both had feelings for each other like those two. But we put them off or put a wall up. Though my story ends differently, as you can tell. After about 3 or 4 months. He came out to me as Trans. I'm not gonna lie. Me and him talked through a lot, and we basically closed the book on what could have been for us. But you know what, the dude is literally the bother that I never had. My entire family see him as their own, too. More than ever. Hell, he even calls my mom Mom. And she her son. So I'm not gonna lie. Hearing this made me think of my own past a little. But I think the ending I have could have been the best ending I could have ever asked for.

I read this from the beginning, and I adore it. I genuinely desire for everyone to experience this kind of storytelling and subversion of tropes. But yeah, there's a handful of moments with dissonance that don't help anything, and the original source material lends itself to comedy more than cohesion, but it's an excellent story I doubt anyone will regret following

actually Jun even gives a reason as to why Tomo seems out of her element when something happens she didn't expect, when they fight, he can always beat her in a straight up fight because he is naturally stronger then her. however, he can't beat her in a competitive match because she has better technical skill. Same reason why Jun protects her when she get's groped on the train and why he gets involved when the beach bum hits on her, she knows what she's supposed to do, but she never expected it to happen to her for real, and it's causing her to freak out.

Gundo and Carol contribute in such a unique and special way and its always great to see them tag teaming on Tomo and Jun lmao. Honestly I was sold on the whole idea as soon as Gundo said "I'm the only one who's allowed to play with them." Top tier petty friend shit 😂

The grope scene and beach scene is i believe there to convinse Tomo that Jun DOES see her as a girl. Its small hints for both of them. Kind of reminds me a bit of "when will ayume make his move" (great anime) in that he knows what he feels but he needs somthing to happend before confessing namely to feel worthy. Ayume wants to beat Urushi in Shogi, and jun still thinks he is weaker than Tomo (when they are together) so they both wants to be "the strongest man" before vonfessing. Great video.😄👍
