The Subway Gangs of Mexico City

It's Saturday morning in a Mexico City subway station, and the members of the Panamiur gang are headed to a party. Their leader, Cidel, is wearing huge sunglasses, a fauxhawk slathered in hair gel, cargo pants, and a T-shirt with a giant 2 and 6 airbrushed across it-a reference to November 26, 2010, the date the Panamiurs were founded.
The four dozen kids surrounding Cidel are similarly adorned in fake gold chains, oversize shades, brightly colored baseball caps, and tight jeans. They shout chants at a member of a rival gang on the other side of the platform. "Jori's fucking mom is taking a bath, eh, oh!," they holler. "She's very close to our territory, eh, oh! With a huge dick in one hand and a rag with PVC glue in the other, eh, oh! And the gang says, we are gonna rape her, we are gonna rape her. Hard, hard in the ass! Fucking bitch!" .....

As a person from the opposite side of Mexico, I can see why these teens are cringy to most Mexicans but nevertheless this video is so fascinating. Teen cultures can be very diverse. I just spent a week in Mexico City. I'm American, am NOT fluent in Spanish, and don't really look Hispanic(I'm very light skinned Middle Eastern). Mexico City has a bad reputation, but it seems completely underserved. As a visitor, you're much more likely to be a victim of crime in a US city than in Mexico CIty. The Reforma BLVD(the main artery in downtown), Zona Roma, La Condesa, the Zocalo, Polanco, Zona Rosa- all over the neighborhoods downtown, are completely safe, even at night. I felt much safer walking around downtown Mexico CIty at night than I would here in San Francisco, Los Angeles or any major city in California. A truly remarkable city which Americans MUST visit. I've traveled around the world, and Mexico City was definitely one of my favorite destinations. Don't be scared! It's FAR safer than most Mexican cities. If you've been to Cabo or Cancun, odds are you'll feel safer in Mexico City. I watched this video before I visited Mexico City. Now I just watch it and LAUGH!

You didn't visit the ugly parts of the city, where there is poverty, drug and alcohol abuse, prostitution, constant robberies, shootings and homicides, all in full daylight, like Tepito, Garibaldi, La Merced, the Doctores neighborhood, or Tlatelolco, just to mention some in the center area of the city. Outside the center of the city, there are much worse zones, like Iztapalapa. Tourists are always taken to the pretty zones, but we the people who actually live here know the real thing.
