1:10 Lower back muscle activation is one of the worst parts of lifting loads from the floor or lowering them onto a pallet. It's fine if you're only doing it for an hour or two, but if you're doing that for 12 hours, 4 days a week, you've got yourself a significant problem. It over trains your lumbar spine and causes what is known in the bodybuilding world as "a pump", which is basically when blood saturates the muscle and makes it temporarily larger than it normally is (which is fine for most muscles, but not ok for the lumbar spine). This just gets worse and worse throughout the day and impairs your ability to work safely because it puts your spine out of alignment and everything feels tight, increasing your risk of spinal injury, compared to just doing it for an hour or two. People can say "practice good technique then" all they want but those people have never worked as an agency worker in a fast paced factory, where the factory can just replace the worker in one shift if the worker gets an injury. Some of these factories' owners don't care at all whether someone gets an injury, they are just replaceable agency workers in their eyes. **Edit** They allocate their agency workers according to how much one person is physically capable of doing rather than what a worker is capable of doing safely. They hire fewer workers than is actually needed for those workers to work in a safe manner. Time is an issue and you don't have enough time to perform the lifts safely because there aren't enough workers to take up the slack when you're fatiguing, so they just have to work on, regardless of the pain and increased risk of injury. A 66% reduction of lower back muscle activation is highly significant and would certainly see fewer injuries and fewer agency workers being left sat at home with a bad back and no income. When the price of these suits comes down, If I had the power to enforce such a rule, I would make it mandatory to provide these suits to all agency workers that work lifting or lowering loads repeatedly, if they wish to wear one.

The idea is great, especially for people with bad backs or weakness. But I think bosses will start to expect more from workers because of their new capacity.

Considering the average gym goer can easily deadlift 315-405 pounds after training for like 6 months, yea 50 pounds is pretty pathetic. Any person who does any kind of exercise in their life shouldnt have any trouble lifting that

I wonder if this lead to muscle atrophy though. Maybe they should do some type of system where the first half of the shift is done without the suit, and the second half is done with it. Otherwise you might lose muscle mass and the task will become just as difficult as when you're not wearing the suit. It probably won't work out to be exactly the same, but I think the general principle might appy.

glad i found this video. This kind of gear would be GREAT for people who get tired standing for hours on an assembly line. Especially that leg support / chair. I used to work retail clerk on my feet for 8 hours walking and standing. would have been nice to have leg hip support device to relieve the strain on my feet. since the device would handle most of the body weight as i stood. Would love to see if similar devices are out there there for just standing and walking all day. I'd bet people who stand 8 hrs or more on their feet would also feel the same. here's to the future! cheers!

Really cool and utterly feasible for commercial use in the next few years. The millitary might tango with it slightly but I feel that Boston Dynamics is gonna win that battle with their robots. The first nation with a full robotic infantry will dominate. We're way of that yet though.

I think it's important to think about the long term benefits of these devices. I think they should be optional for most jobs, meaning the employer can offer to provide them (deducted from pay) or the employee can opt to purchase their own. The long term medical benefits and increased quality of life would be well worth the money. However, this would depend on the cost of maintenance. It would also depend on how quickly the price decreases and how the market develops.

I wonder about the health of muscles and your back if you lift something up. Does it support your muscles without degenerating your own strength in long time effects? Sry for my english, i hope you understand :)
@barrys98425 жыл бұрын
It’s more for support, so it just reduces harmful long-term effects of manual labor jobs. You still use your muscles, just not to harmful levels everyday. Your strength would only degenerate if you never took the suit off and basically never used your muscles somehow lol.

I wish I had this when I was a masonry labor. Moving hundreds of12 inch block in a day would've been a breeze instead of simulating one of Dantes levels of hell. Really cool though, I was 18 to 22 when I did that job and even being young it would wreck my body daily . For future labors I hope this finds its away to them one day

I think some of it is psychological; she thinks she can't lift the boxes without the skeleton, but activating it gives her confidence.
@zionchar116 жыл бұрын
the only thing this need now is a component for the arm.. because even if it have spine and leg support and shoulder.. mind you your arm and wrist are not supported. This is an exoskeleton without hand support. Example: if you were to lift 200 Kg(440lb) your spine shoulder and leg get supported which is fine.. but your wrist and forearm would still feel like lifting 200 kg but if future projects they do the arm then they'll have a complete suit. Another way to see it is you preventing something that weighs 200Kg (440lb) falling, your arms would have no additional support to hold it but you have the support from the legs back and shoulder.
@john_gyver6 жыл бұрын
Great video, but that exoskeleton is heavily overpriced. There are no actuators or complex electronics. It's made of metal sticks and springs, so these prices are crazy.
@dr.zoidberg86666 жыл бұрын
Not really... they're not looking to sell these things to individuals. They're looking to sell them to companies as industrial tools. Especially when you factor in all the r&d as well as the sheer ip value, these are pretty cheap. It's not like these guys are a charity. But in any case none of that matters, because if this is the price that companies are willing to pay for this product, then it's not overpriced. & if companies won't pay these prices, then the price will come down, or they will go out of business. Simple as that.
