TRUE STORY: My parents rented Super Mario Bros 3 from the video store when it came out. Afterward, the store kept insisting we owed late fees because we never returned it. One day, my Mom was cleaning out the car, and she found the rental under the driver's seat. She took it up to the store and the clerk said she owed $30. She paid and handed him the game. He handed it back and said, "Now you own it." And that's how we came to own Super Mario Bros 3.

Got to see this movie at the theater, about a week after it first came out, to a packed room. Always thought this movie did a good job of not only representing Nintendo and the Mario franchise as a whole, but also showed some respect to the 80s and 90s in the process.

4:01 - This is a slightly deeper cut. Spike is 'Foreman Spike' from the NES game Wrecking Crew (you can see it on the arm of his shirt). Spike was Mario's corrupt boss in that game, which as you see worked it's way into this movie's lore. 4:31 - Pay attention to the street details in this sequence. It's World 1-1 from Super Mario Bros. 4:48 - Tons of small details in this scene. The wall art is the block texture from Mario 3 fortresses and you can see a sculpture of a pikmin on one shot, among others. 5:49 - 'Papa Mario' is Charles Martinet's other role in this movie. 6:05 - Mario siting in the dark playing video games is (probably) a reference to "Sūpā Mario Burazāzu: Piichi-hime Kyūshutsu Dai Sakusen!", the first animated Mario Bros. story, which started the same way: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rKvPi6xvr9WqZrM Also, 'Mayor Pauline' is Mario's girlfriend from Donkey Kong, and her being mayor of New York is reference to her being mayor of New Donk City in the Switch game Mario Odyssey. 6:26 - Most reactors don't call that out, so congrats. 7:48 - This isn't the first time in this movie that the music has been prominent. This, of course, is music from Super Mario World, the music in the opening was the Airship Theme from Mario 3, and 'Level 1-2' had the classic underworld theme. There'll be plenty more musical references later, including, of course, the BIG CLIMAX! Also glad you called out the Futurama connection. 8:40 - They've tried. 11:12 - The argument can be made that this imagery is a reference to Peach's Final Smash in Smash Bros, but it's a _little_ bit of a stretch. 11:36 - With all the other awesome stuff in this movie, Peach's Fire transformation sequence is in my top 2 moments. 12:35 - We've got Swanky Kong as the gatekeeper, then there's the Rambi Medal for his kart's hood ornament. 13:04 - For all the uproar about Chris Pratt, THIS is the only actually BAD casting choice in the movie. 13:39 - They got all 3 DKC sidekicks in one shot here. 14:03 - So, Emily, did you actually recognize the Tiny Shroom here? 15:20 - So I'm going to mention here that I agree with most of the critics I've heard talk about this movie in saying that they could have made the movie a bit longer to expand on some of the story and world building. Two points I wish they'd explained a little more are why Peach hates Bowser so much and (case in point) WHY do the Kongs have Kart technology? 16:34 - Meanwhile, one of my FAVORITE things about this movie is how organically Mario and Peach's relationship develops. 20:41 - Illumination's legendary lack-of-subtlety on display here with Peach going full Frozen with that Ice Flower. 23:42 - That music kicking in STILL makes my skin tingle. 15 seconds. GO!! 23:57 - No, they're 'flight speed' running. 24:05 - So long, que Bowser!! 24:36 - So the whole deal with Lumalee here is a commentary of the nihilistic subtext of the Lumas in Mario Galaxy: they're so cute and happy, then you feed them Star Bits and they explode to become items to help you. 25:24 - I still want to know WHY IS THIS A GODZILLA '98 REFERENCE?!?! kzbin.infoBVZTI45S-Xk

For one, Mario and Luigi going deep underground to do some plumbing to fix a water issue, finding the portal to another world, and not to mention the climax of the movie involves the creatures from the other world appearing in Brooklyn where everyone can see the Mario Bros. fight some otherworldly creatures, including the King of the Koopas.

Fun fact: their commercial at the beginning of the movie was using the song from the 80's cartoon "Super Mario Bros Super Show", which had Captain Lou Albano playing both Live action Mario and his cartoon voice. Not sure what movie they watched lol. 6:40 When they go in the room with the Level 1-2 sign, they play the song from that level as well, it's played pretty softly though so it can be hard to notice. Khary Payton (Ezekiel from The Walking Dead) is King Penguin. If I remember correctly, Chris Pratt also did not win fans with his first interview. He acted stoned and disinterested, and said something (I don't remember what) that showed he didn't really remember any Mario lore (misidentified one of the mobs, maybe?), and the Wahoo they put in the trailer sounded nothing like Mario. I'm not one of the people upset by the casting, but I heard some of the ranting, so that's what I recall of it.

Aside from Bowser's solo, I wasn't THAT crazy about the film. I mean it was decent enough and my kids loved it - I dunno, maybe I need to watch it again. That being said, as a Super Mario film, it's about as good an adaptation as you could get.

I love the original…but being honest, it’s objectively horrible and 100% of my love of it is nostalgia (and I don’t care 😂) but this movie was expertly done. In a nutshell, fan-service done exceptionally well. Very excited to see what’s next 😊
