Fun fact! The lady on the tv at 5:01 is Pauline, the girl from the original Donkey Kong game (the game that both Mario and Donkey Kong had their first appearance in), so she was a character before, Peach, Toad, Yoshi, and even Luigi! She was replaced with Peach in the first official Mario Bros game as the damsel in distress, but has recently made a resurgence after being the mayor of New Donk City in Mario Odyssey and is playable in pretty much all of the recent spinoff games (like Mario Kart, Mario Party, the sports games, etc.) She's my favorite character so I was VERY excited that she got a cameo! :)

Honestly, even though there’s not much to the movie, the fact is that they managed to make it accurate, they used the “trapped in another world” plotline that the 1993 version with Bob Hoskins used (that movie is a guilty pleasure for me) and did it better, the designs and animation are perfect, Bowser’s motivations are pettily hilarious and make sense for his character, Princess Peach is downright awesome in this version and it’s one of my favourite iterations of the character (I honestly can’t remember how each version of Peach is different in the games, even in the never ones where she’s given more to do. It’s more like “you’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all” for me), the voice cast surprisingly works (despite some very weird choices like Chris Pratt as Mario, who is kind of mid casting as he doesn’t change his voice that much apart from a Brooklyn accent), and the pacing and runtime are spot on. This movie didn’t need to be more than it was, it just needed to be accurate and that’s what it did, with incredibly welcome changes along the way to make it work for the big screen. Only thing I didn’t like was the licensed needle drops, which kind of took me out of the movie.

My memories about this movie are great, I loved it since the first time I watched it. Nintendo went so hard to drive home the point how much the Mario Brothers love each other. Literally every scene they have together shows it. They did so to shut up everyone that keep claiming Mario hates Luigi. Literally every argument they could possibly make gets smashed to pieces in this movie. "They come from a broken family." Nope! They come from a big loving family. "Luigi resents Mario and would turn on him in a second." Nope! Even in Bowser’s clutches, he cant stop singing his praises. "But not as kids. If you've never played at any Donkey Kong games, I very very extremely highly recommend playing the Donkey Kong Country games. Donkey Kong Country 2 and Donkey Kong Country 3 are maybe the two best platformers ever made in the entire history of video games. I was genuinely thinking very hard about this last week, trying to figure out what the most perfect game series of all time is. And I basically narrowed it down to Dishonored, followed fairly closely by Donkey Kong Country. DKC1 - 9/10 DKC2 - 15/10 DKC3 - 10/10 DKC Tropical Freeze - 9.5/10 DKC Returns - 9/10 That's not to say every Donkey Kong game is great. Just the Donkey Kong Country games. Donkey Kong Land is pretty much just inferior 8-bit Game Boy versions of Donkey Kong Country. Donkey Kong 64 is a good but not amazing 3D platformer. The original Donkey Kong game is fine, but.....very basic and annoyingly difficult in that old arcade game sort of way (Because it was designed to make you feed more quarters into the machine). Etc. However, it's worth noting that Diddy Kong Racing is fucking amazing. It's basically on par with the best Mario Kart games, and it does things that I really wish Mario Kart would do. Like it lets you pilot hovercrafts, and airplanes in addition to the go-karts, instead of JUST go-karts. It has a whole elaborate single player story mode, where you're exploring the island that all the races take place on, and you have to race against bosses. Where you pick up random items from mystery boxes in Mario Kart, did he come racing has it so that they have different types of balloons that give you different predetermined weapons. So you can choose what you want to arm yourself with. And then it takes it a step further, by letting you pick up multiples of the same balloons to upgrade your weapons to more and more advanced and dangerous forms. It adds like a whole additional tactical strategic element to the game that Mario Kart doesn't have. So, especially if you have some Mario Kart buddies to play with, I definitely also recommend checking out Diddy Kong Racing. 🤷🏻‍♂️ But primarily, I think basically everyone should do themselves a favor and play the Donkey Kong Country series. There's a reason that those games are the ones that every subsequent Donkey Kong thing is modeled after. Like the original Donkey Kong arcade game and Donkey Kong Jr designs for stuff don't get used, because that's not the Donkey Kong stuff that anybody cares about. Everybody loves Donkey Kong from Donkey Kong Country, and Diddy Kong, and Dixie Kong, and Funky Kong, and Cranky Kong, and King K. Rool, and the Kremling Krew, and Swanky Kong, and Wrinkly King, and Rambi the Rhino, and Winky the Frog, and Expresso the Ostrich, and Squawks the Parrot, and Squitter the Spider, and Ellie the Elephant, and all the other Animal Buddies, and the Brothers Bear. It's a whole big fun world with amazing amazing music, and all sorts of fun and wacky creatures and animals and landscapes, and a whole cast of great characters. And see, Super Mario World is obviously amazing. But it's rooted in Super Mario Bros 1 on the NES. Right? So it's like rooted in the most primitive original hit version of a 2D platformer. Super Mario World does some new stuff, but ultimately it's still based on that. Donkey Kong Country started out on the SNES, so it kind of didn't have anything from a more primitive system that it was based on. It started out more advanced, so it has more complex and interesting things you can do than just run and jump. Like they have different rolling abilities, you could slam the ground and break things out of it, smash through walls, climb ropes, hover around, carry and throw objects differently, pick each other up and throw your partner, etc etc. They are super dynamic and flow very well once you master the controls. They just play like......"What if Mario were invented on more advanced hardware?" Mario got Yoshi, and then that was pretty much it. The Kongs got an entire menagerie of Animal Buddies to ride, each with different powers and specialties Rhinos to smash through walls, snakes and frogs that can jump super high, spiders that can create webs to bounce around on and use as projectiles, elephants that are afraid of mice and can shoot water and suck objects towards them, ostriches that can glide and run super fast over the heads of short enemies, a swordfish who's super fast and water and can impale enemies, etc etc. Obviously I love those games. But it's not just me. They're pretty universally recognized as some of the best platformers ever made. Especially Donkey Kong Country 2. 🤷🏻‍♂️

One thing that upsets me about this movie's OST is that there ARE more fitting songs made for some of the scenes, but they were replaced with pop songs where the only one that remotely fits is the Brooklyn song. The songs DO exist but they're a part of the soundtrack you buy but are nowhere in the movie itself. As far as the insides of the pipes, it varies from game to game, because there HAVE been instances where we DO see what the inside of the pipe looks like, but it's rare. Also the power up in the arena is Cat Mario, not Tanooki, it's from 3D World.

Since no one asked, here's my Pitch for a Luigi's Mansion movie Opening scene is King Boo getting word of the Mario Brothers, and sending Boos to spy on them. By now, the brothers are firmly established in the Mushroom Kingdom as the Mario Brothers, and when we first see them now, they’re putting up fliers offering their services. But immediately, we can see that when someone stops to talk to them, everyone seems to be gravitating towards Mario. Which is fine, and even expected, as people know him as the guy that saved the Kingdom. But it’s not long before Luigi’s insecurities rear up their ugly heads, to the point where he feels like he can’t even tell Mario about them. What insecurities exactly? The one’s you’d expect: only being known as Mario’s brother, or the guy that got trapped in a cage that needed Mario to rescue him. Which get worse when someone makes an offhand comment that gets under his skin. It’s essentially a parallel to what their dad said to Mario: about holding Mario back now that he’s a hero. But here’s the secret: those comments don’t really bother him. It’s already been established that Luigi has been Mario’s #1 fan since before they even knew the Mushroom Kingdom existed. If people gush over Mario more, they’re just repeating what he’s known since they were babies. Why would that kind of talk start to bother him now? No. For Luigi’s insecurities to be as bad as we’re being shown, it has to go deeper than that. The real fear is that one day MARIO will see that, and just decide he’s done looking out for him. You thought he was heartbroken when trapped in the cage? NOTHING compared to what happens upon thinking of that. However long that takes, everything comes to a head when Luigi gets the notice about winning the mansion in the mail, and he decides to go check it out. Whether it’s because he suspects something is up or he’s too distracted by his insecurities, does not matter. What does is that he decides to go alone to prove he’s not just Mario’s little brother. And I will emphasize this right here and now: Luigi does not blame Mario for ANY of this. He loves Mario the same as he always has, if not more, and it’s that exact love why he’s so scared of losing him. He shrugs off Mario’s questions as to why he’s going alone, and leaves. Which then prompts Mario to check out the notice himself, and after some research, realizes Luigi’s about to walk into a trap, and runs off to try and stop him. While all this is happening, we need two different sets of flashbacks, wherever they make sense: flashbacks of them growing up, to show how their relationship changes into what it is now. And snippets of a more recent one, with Mario telling him he’s moving to the Mushroom Kingdom, offering him a chance to come with; Luigi panicking because a) he’s still traumatized by what happened, and b) he’s scared of losing his brother again if he says no. Eventually Luigi makes it to the mansion, and it plays out like it did in the game. I trust Nintendo’s ability to make sure it stays as true to the game as it can be. It’s still about getting rid of the painting ghosts and all that, but keeps coming back to the insecurities. And if there's a way to add their Twin Sense to the story, preferably when Luigi finds something of Mario's, that would be AWESOME. Mario, on his side, is not just trapped in a painting. The painting itself is essentially a pocket dimension where he can see everything that’s going on, as one of King Boo’s cruel torture tactics, but no matter how loud he screams or yells, Luigi can’t see or hear him unless in the throne room, because that’s where the physical painting actually is. It's revealed the Boos had been observing Luigi for weeks to figure out the best way to mess with him, and while they usually just do what we’ve seen them do in the games, they tried something different because Luigi essentially did all the work for them, and enhanced his insecurities to lure him to the mansion to trap him there. And of course, when he faces King Boo, he gets hit where it really hurts: the fallout of all those flashbacks: every time Luigi got hurt or was picked on, and Mario stepped in. Or only Moving to the Mushroom Kingdom to make Mario happy. King Boo laughing at him and saying how he’s so weak he can’t even fight his own battles, no wonder Mario got taken so easily. Luigi starts to believe it, maybe even starts crying, I won’t object, but then he hears Mario banging on the painting, making him look up. Whatever Mario says here is meant to get Luigi to look back again, and we see a flashback montage. Sure, Mario stepped in at first, but when Luigi got older, he started doing the same. And even had Mario teach him to defend himself, despite the fact that it scared the shit out of Mario every time he fell or got hurt. The very last flashback is of when Mario finally made him talk about moving to the Mushroom Kingdom, and Luigi admitted how scared he was about the whole idea. And you guessed it, Mario gives a bona fide Good Big Brother speech that ends with another Bro Hug. And THAT is what gives Luigi the strength to get back up and kick King Boo’s ass straight back into the painting where he belongs. Keep the game’s ending in there, or the fans will riot, then give us a Proud Big Brother moment after they’re home safe. Then it ends with them hanging up more fliers all over the Mushroom Kingdom, but now we see there’s a new thing added to their services: Boo Hunting. Oh yeah. And to keep with the first movie's continuity: soundtrack only has music from or before the year the game came out. This would be November 2001, so use your imagination.

Bowser, scary?! Forget about Bowser, he has nothing on Francis, that thing should be muzzled. Golden Retrievers are considered to be very friendly, but, true story, I once drove past a café, where an enployee was cleaning a table, and just a few meters away there was a couple with a Golden, leashed thankfully, that went bananas on the poor woman, it barked, and pulled on the leash like it was rabid. I guess that is why they made Francis so aggressive, and a Golden, you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, or a dog by its breed. Still, it was borderline overkill to make him that aggressive, imo. Love this movie though, even though I was, and is, more of a PlayStation person than a Nintendo person, I can't deny that the nostalgia is strong with this one. Also, fun fact, Mario wasn't always supposed to be a plumber, he was originally a carpenter. I love mushrooms too, in pasta, and on pizza. The Super Mario theme is my happy place, it always gets me in a good mood, I even have it as my ringtone. Did you see the little nod to Godzilla from Yoshi at the end? 6:08 Don't you mean Super Nintendional? Sorry, I'll see myself out, and probably hit the door on my way out.
