There’s a lot I love about the 1993 Mario movie, both ironically and unironically, but one of the more obscure things I love is Shigeru Miyamoto’s review of the movie. In a 2007 interview, Miyamoto said "The one thing that I still have some regrets about is that the movie may have tried to get a little too close to what the Mario Bros. videogames were. And in that sense, it became a movie that was about a videogame, rather than being an entertaining movie in and of itself." Yes. According to Miyamoto, the failing of the Mario movie was not how far removed from the source material, but how *close* it was. The fact that Miyamoto is supposedly close to the new Mario movie makes me both very excited and concerned on what his idea of a distanced Mario movie will be like.

Lmaooo no way, how the fuck was that his takeaway?! Haha well Miyamoto is and always was an interesting character. I really enjoyed this movie as a kid. Like yeah it's not faithful to the games and the production being so nasty sorta makes it uncomfortable, but I found it really fun with the crazy ass Blade Runner Koopa city, Dennis Hopper, the ridiculous but still pretty endearing design of the Goombas, the super scope guns with all those really fun VFX, the jump boots, the bob-omb with the branded shoes, the lady Bob Hoskins practically motorboats to get the rock back, fungus dad. Like a lot of this film I could recount from memory which I can't say about a lot of crappy licensed book or video game movie adaptations I've seen in my life, and I'm like 90% sure I'm not gonna be able to say that about the Illumination film when it comes out.

Man, even though I watched this a few times on TV I had forgotten like 99% of this movie. Every scene was shot in that same dark, depressing, bland, grungy bladerunner set so most of the movie kind of blends together for me. The only thing that stuck with me from that movie was the meat and veggies scene. Toad comes in with this plate of raw meat, Daisy says she's a vegetarian, and asks if there's chance for a plate of steamed veggies. Toad later comes back with nice plate of veggies. As a kid I thought that was a great bit of world building to show that in a world of dinosaurs meals are prepared for both carnivores and herbivores. Also that plate of veggies was probably the most colorful thing in the movie

Fun fact: The director of the movie confirmed the movie is actually a PREQUEL to the 1985 NES game. That's why the movie ends that way. Mario, Luigi, and Daisy would go back to the Mushroom Kingdom which evolved to what we all are familiar with, Koopa evolved to Bowser and Mario meets his own girlfriend which is Peach. So if you really want a second part so bad, chance are you already seen it. Or played it. 😂

I was an obsessed 11 year old Mario fan when this came out. I had the original NES at the time and played the three original Super Mario Bros. games a lot as well as watched the The Super Mario Bros Super Show and Adventures Of Super Mario Bros. 3. When the Super Mario Bros. movie came out it was the first time a video game movie adaptation had been made so there was no notion of how it would be. I saw it in theaters when it came out and actually enjoyed it even though it was different from how the characters looked in artwork from the official game art. Keep in mind that the video games of the time were shown in 8 bit and 16 bit pixels so a lot was left to the imagination. I wasn't even aware of the films infamous and bad reputation until the 2010s. Even though I understand it's flaws that it's not considered a good movie I still have a nostalgic fondness for it. I still have my old VHS tape copy of the movie all these years. It does seem to have a cult following now.
