@sboinkthelegday38922 жыл бұрын
blue/green only came years and years later. Maybe in 1983 Luigi is green/white as washed out palette version of intended blue/yellow. And then the NES colors never were accurate to anything, but swapping between overall or shirt color seems to be a series tradition.

Watching this movie is like a fever dream while riding a rollercoaster. It's so weird and off the wall at times. But then again... considering Mario was just making a cultural presence for himself in 1985 and the OVA was released just a year later... the sky was the limit for what would be considered fitting for a Mario movie. Although the twist ending I feel is the most bonkers and out of place moment. I shouted at my screen in disbelief when I saw it.

The apex of visual storytelling, with a subtle and profound philosophical message that resonates to this day. The themes of this gripping narrative pay clear homage to Kant's Deontological Ethical Theory. The Mario brothers are flawed heroes, driven through the story by heteronomy. Instead of pursuing The Good autonomously, out of a sense of moral duty and obedience to the categorical imperative, their base desires (Luigi's greed for money, Mario's desire for personal intimacy) only incidentally drive them to perform heroic actions. The frustration of their desires, in the end, is rather justified. After all, while they certainly did the right thing, they absolutely did it for the wrong reasons, and that is in no way morally laudable (at least according to Kant). Also the subtle dig at capitalism is as startling as it is incisive. Mario almost manages to save the world easily when he is about to unite the triforce, but he is thwarted not by his enemies, but rather his desire for consumer branded products. Once again showing the unreliable weakness of a "hero" driven by heteronomous desires instead of genuine moral integrity.

I actually really enjoyed this movie, except for the inconsistencies with how the three powerups work. In the walking montages following the discoveries of the mushroom and flower, there are quick little shots of Mario using those powerups just like they work in the games. But in the final fight with Bowser, they seemingly do nothing unless he eats all three of them, at which point he is just stronger and nothing else...?
