I call that a $30 pizza. ever go to order a pizza, and you get all of the toppings you like, but your pizza does not taste vary good because of everything piled on it. it cost you $30 but you realized you wasted your money. The same thing happens with snakes. You pike on too many morphs and you end up with a genetically impressive snake, but it does not look that great, or in the case of ball pythons a normal looking snake. With corn snakes if you want to track what genes are in your snakes you have to work with Homozygus genes. It is easyier with corn snakes because they can have up to 24 hatchlings. Means if you have that 1 in 32 chance to getting the jackpot with a 6 gene corn snake you may get it with the first year. Also since corn snakes don't have any incomplete dominate gene the morphs really stand out a lot better. If I was working with ballpythons I would on'y work with supers for breeding. take the guesswork right out, and the supers are the big selling snakes.

Those are some beautiful combos. Wow! Hey I don't remember if I've asked you this before or not so forgive me if I am repeating myself, but has there been any visual offspring of a Bamboo × Sunset ball python combo yet? I would really like to know what that would look like. Thanks.

Hey Chris it’s my first year breeding ball pythons I think I’m seeing signs of follicle growth and ovulation but I’m also pretty unsure. I started pairing my snakes at the beginning of November at what point would be a good time to stop pairing for the season if Im unsure of an ovulation? Also when do you stop and start pairing your snakes for the year??
@ChrisHardwickanimaladventures
@ChrisHardwickanimaladventures 4 жыл бұрын
I start pairing October 15th and stop at the end of February, about 4.5 months.

Your comment on how many genes you can put in a snake.. my degree and field of work is molecular genetics, this community misuses terms but everyone seems to have a consistent use for them so let's just point out just what I need for this question. Alleles are basically versions of a gene. So base pair number 26 in exon 1 of gene ABC changed amino acid 8 in the protien it codes for. This change causes a visually recognizable change you call a morph. If more than one morph are cause by changes in the same gene/segment that is inherited together then you can't have more 'genes' there without mutating the same segment of DNA the first mutation is physically on. Assume there are 2 copies of each gene. A dominant/codominant trait you can have 2 because you need just 1 copy, a recessive 1 because you need 2 copies. So adding more and more morph genes relies on different genes being the source of the morph. It gets more complicated when copy number variation (gene count deviates from then expects 2 copies), and more complex traits that have multiple genes contributing to what we see, like skin color or height in humans. To cut it short, there are limits, we just dont know enough about python genetics to tell you exactly what the limits are for each morph. Though mutation can slowly change many things given enough generations, just like evolution and domestication of canines, so patience and luck will lead to new and interesting things.
@ChrisHardwickanimaladventures
@ChrisHardwickanimaladventures 4 жыл бұрын
Very true! There are limits, especially when looking at a complex like the blue eyed leucistic, you can only have a total of two genes with mojave, bamboo, russo, lesser, etc... But I think you could have a snake with 100 different genes for example, plus there are only 180 morphs so that's a limit too LOL
@MintyFarts
@MintyFarts 4 жыл бұрын
@@ChrisHardwickanimaladventures you could have a snake with 100 mutations resulting in visible differences compared to a wild type ball python. But the number of genes related to pattern and color are limited which is where the mutations need to be. Some mutations knock out function completely and you would need to have many mutations on the same physical segment of DNA actually called a gene to fit multiple traits in which would change how that gene is expressed making it likely a different morph anyway.. sooo say you have 4 genes related to pattern and color and each gene has 2 copies. 2 genes are inherited together because they are physically close together in the pythons genome. You could have a mutation in each gene, so 8 possible segments for modifications on any of the nucleotides, except 2 nearly always get inherited together, so having a mutation on gene a and gene b on two separate copies of the DNA means those 2 wont likely ever come together as anything other than het. That's another limitation.. half the genes you thought you could play with are semi-locked down so to speak.. you can have mutations all up and down DNA and as long as the organism can still live and reproduce it doesnt matter, breeding them together is trickier because of how our bodies take care of DNA and treat it when shuffling and that you dont just 'insert' a gene, you are picking a or b not adding c.. think of it like a book where you have pages with text on both sides.. you can tear it in 4 segments and shuffle it with 4 segments of another book. Certain chapters will move together simply because they are close physically in the book... each chapter, work or letter doesnt move independently. You can have typos though. But the way you share those typos is trickier..
