If we are actually talking about the rarest play that can happen in a game, it’s the 1 point safety. It’s happened twice I think in division 1 college football with the kicking team scoring, but it’s never happened with the defending team scoring

A defending team would have a 2-pt safety. By design, a 1-point safety is when the _defense_ has the ball out of the end zone, moves into the end zone and the offense tackles them in the end zone.

@mantis1au2 ай бұрын
You missed two (at least). In a Monday Night Football game between the Giants and 49ers in 1989, Phil Simms threw a pass to himself, but you won't find it in the stats because it was negated by a penalty - a blitzing Ronnie Lott was bearing down on him, so he threw it again. In another Monday Night Football game in 2020 between the Buccaneers and the Rams, Tom Brady completed a pass to himself, and threw it again for a completion. His catch didn't count because the penalty was declined to bring up 4th down, and the second pass was the only throw that went into the stat book.

Funniest part is this means a QB can be called for illegal touching. The ball would somehow have to caught without getting deflected, but the rule states the QB is only an eligible reciever if he is in the Shotgun. If he is under center he is ineligible
@goodmaro2 ай бұрын
How about an even rarer one: where the passer catches his own pass *without a deflection?* I doubt there's one example in the entire history of the NFL, where until recently a quarterback under center was not an eligible receiver, so it could be done only after the ineligible receivers gain eligibility via a deflection. If you think a deliberate self-pass is insuperably hard, consider that you can make it as a 2-hand underhand toss. Try it yourself and you'll see you can complete passes to yourself of maybe 20 yards, no problem. NCAA made the QB under center an eligible receiver by the 1950s.

You can always redefine "rarest play" by putting enough conditions on it. Like, has anyone ever gotten credit for more than one tackle on a given down? Could happen if the first tackle results in a fumble (ball stays live but credited as a tackle).

reminded of one time in the NFL where a punt was blocked and the punter kicked it again. Apparently that was Michael Dickson of the Seahawks against the Rams early in the 2021 season, and is allowed as long as the ball had not crossed the LOS He was still on the LOS when he punted the 2nd time, like how being on/behind the line at all makes a 1st pass attempt legal XFL/USFL and UFL allow double forward pass if still behind the LOS, and I suppose that could happen with a deflected pass coming back to you

rarest play is a double completed double pass for sure. Need to have a pass, deflection caught by the QB, then another pass that gets caught by a receiver but in a way where the opposing team won't accept the penalty such as a 3rd and 20 where this play happens and the gain is only 8. You're missing the time Brady caught his own pass (this was when he was on the Buccs I think 2021?). It didn't show up on the stat sheet because he did something that no one else here did - he passed it again. This was a penalty, but because the pass was on 3rd down and completed short of the sticks, the Rams declined the penalty so both the second pass and the reception counted

Only if you're playing under rules allowing more than one forward pass per down. Most people who've ever played football *have* played under such rules, because the most popular rules set, that of the National Federation of State High School Associations, did allow it from some time in the 1940s until about 15 years ago. See, even if the first pass was batted back to where or behind where it was passed from, it still counts as a forward pass.

I'd wager the double kick being legal and the double forward pass not being is a remnant of North American football's history as an offspring of Rugby League.
@DieFlabbergast2 ай бұрын
@@adiuntesserande6893 Hoho! People talking about things of which they know nothing! When American Football was invented, in 1880, Rugby League did not yet exist. League came into being in 1895. What you are thinking of is Rugby Union, which is the code of rugby football played across most of the world, and which was established during the 1860s. Since the forward pass is illegal in BOTH rugby codes, what you say makes no sense anyway.
@goodmaro2 ай бұрын
Indeed they do allow it. It was also allowed for most of the entire history of the National Federation of State High School Associations, which only outlawed it about 15 years ago.
@goodmaro2 ай бұрын
@@adiuntesserande6893 North American football did not come from Rugby League, although it is a type of rugby. When the forward pass was legalized in 1906, they put on a limit of one per down. However, in the 1940s the National Federation of State High School Associations took that limit off and kept it off until about 15 years ago when they put it back on.

@@DieFlabbergast Canadian and American football are pre-RFU versions of rugby. In 1876 the Intercollegiate Football Association did adopt almost all RU laws, but Canadians had been playing rugby since before the RU formed, and American colleges started adopting pre-RU rugby as well. So Canadian football at least, and arguably American football as well, is a sister game to Rugby Union rather than a daughter of it.
