When I was a freshman in college I was studying for a chemistry final and I was distraught. I kept thinking to myself "Gah I need a crash course in chemistry if I'm gonna pass!" So I started googling and found CrashCourse-Chemistry. I watched the videos all night, and it was the first time chemistry was fun to learn! Anyway.... I failed that final and also that chemistry course.... but I had discovered that even the most difficult topics can be fun to learn and each contain their own wonders. I retook the chemistry course and passed with an A the next semester. I got my BS! I wanted to keep learning so I got an MS! I am now writing my dissertation for a PhD in Integrative Physiology! In part because CrashCourse was the spark that lit a fire of curiosity in me. And this flame won't go out.

To be fair some pretty great things fell out of that initiative indirectly. Without it there would for example be no CriticalRole - arguably the greatest D&D show out there. They startet out as part of Geek & Sundry (one of the funded channels originally run by Felicia Day) but seperated later on and are now run by the creators of CriticalRole independently. Also on a somewhat related note: If I remember correctly at one point there was even Geek & Sundry show where Hank, Laura Bailey (one of the CR creators), Will Wheaton and others played an RPG (Titansgrave), which I am still beyond excited about as I'm a long term nerdfigter and have become a huge critter as of late.

For a year and a half, I taught and tutored elementary, middle, and high school students with learning disabilities. There was not a single one of them that did not LOVE Crash Course. It was engaging and insightful to them on a level and in a way that nothing else they'd been offered was. I'm now working on my master's degree to become a librarian, and I feel your stress of budgeting and offering the best educational resources possible on an even deeper level. As a former teacher and a now-almost-librarian, thank you for dedicated your hearts and souls to the cause of free access to educational resources.

There is a third barrier you didn't really talk about: (you discussed making learning boring and expensive or difficult to access for certain people.) certain topics are considered not worth learning, and it prevents those topics from being discussed in an environment that is conducive to learning.

@maxelizabeth7330 3 жыл бұрын
yes this is v important and another reason i love Crash Course! i’ve really been enjoying the new series on Black American History because in a traditional school setting i probably wouldn’t have ever had the opportunity to learn some of the things that the series is teaching me about.
@doommustard8818

@Lee Birchenough one example that bothers me personally is the arts. Scholarly study of the arts are typically limited to "the great works" or "the classics", a poorly defined group of books, music, sculptures and paintings which are considered good for some reason. Studying modern works like videogames, tv shows, movies, memes, and even more recent books to an extent is considered categorically unscholarly. Even works from a similar time period which don't qualify as "great works" or "the classics" are considered unscholarly. How can you study what makes a certain group of works good, without discussing what disqualifies the other group from being good? Even ignoring the fact that this is grounded in prejudicial cultural elitism, it's still an objectively wrong way to study any topic.
@soundofez
@soundofez 3 жыл бұрын
i fight this third barrier every single time i talk with my dad, who despite championing the importance of learning nearly every time we talk, has never once validated music or makeup as valid and important fields. (they're not my fields, i only have passing interest in them, but i feel compelled to bring up the fields he has the least appreciation for to throw his hypocrisy in his face 😡 also bc if i tried to explain why english is Important Actually i would get lost in the weeds and turn into even more of a frustrated mess than i already do lol)
@RainaRamsay
@RainaRamsay 3 жыл бұрын
Also topics that are really important to learn, and yet aren't "academic", so they get left out. It's clear that Hank started this whole process already knowing a whole bunch of stuff about finance -- how to pitch to a venture capitalist, how to read and negotiate a contract, how to estimate a business' profitability potential, available options for monetization -- that just never get taught anywhere except in families that already have those skills. And then we wonder why there's so little social mobility in this country.

Listening to them has also been one of my few refuges from my illness - Hank, I know you know what chronic illness feels like so you'll know how easy it is to sink into depression and that you need to use all the tools you can find, and grow that toolbelt, to keep your head above water. I morn the passing of the people who lifted me out of poverty and abuse when I was little and taught me how to be compassionate about myself and others. People like Mr. Rogers and Robin Williams. I've often wondered who from our generation would step in to fill the immense voids they've left. Clearly you and your brother and all the people who work on these with you are doing just that. You're not teaching the exact same things but compassion, love for learning and curiosity about the world, tolerance, cultural and historic placement of ideas and our progress as a species, the necessity and beautiful kindness of contributing to you community, these are all powerful lessons my son is learning because of you. Thank you. Thank you. Please keep up the struggle for as long as you can. DFTBA all the way!

Watched Crash Course psychology in High School. Got my Bachelor's in Cognitive Science half a year ago. I just finished running the final participant in my VR study for my Master's. I set out on this path because I enjoyed watching all of the Psych playlist. It's working, Brothers Green. It's working. Been with the Vlogbrothers for as long as I can remember. DFTBA.

Man, Crash course is awesome!! I teach Computer Science, usually to college junior and senior, but also in grad school. And I give crash course videos for student to watch often. It is not that it should be new material for them, they should have seen it already! But as a refresher, it is great, even at these levels! "Next week we'll go into details of how caching protocols work in modern processors and why they are important. If you don't remember anything about caching, go watch crash course CS #9." Does it cover everything I wished they knew? No, but it will remind them of basic goals of caches, and basic terminology. Crash Course is awesome, man!!

When Crash Course debuted I was already out of the education system. It made me happy to hear that the stepkids were using it in school, and dad and I still watch it to this day as it really is a fun and informative way to learn. So glad you guys have been offering free educational content that is engaging at any age, free to access. You guys continue to add amazing content for us all and I just wish to express my thanks. I don't have the financial backing to support you guys, but I'm thankful for the community that does and helps keep it alive. (And maybe I'm slightly jealous that the kids today get to watch your shows rather than those old 80s-90s VHS tapes I was forced to watch in high school.)

I'm so glad you guys made crash course work despite all of the hardship I'm sure it brings. I remember watching them in high school classes and watching them for fun in my spare time. Unfortunately, I cannot afford to donate to your cause, but I am incredibly thankful for the work that you both do. Any way people can lower barriers to learning the better this world will be. Much love to you both 💖

Cannot thank you both enough for having the idea and then figuring out a way to keep it free. I had integrated your videos into lessons before, but I relied upon Crash Course Kids (and SciShow Kids) to enrich the remote learning experience for my students all throughout COVID. Those videos are on par with (if not better than) other ones that ARE behind a pay wall. It is a tremendous gift you continue to give. I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I am fairly new to Crash Course, and indeed being a Nerdfighter was a thing I only started on July 7th, 2020, but this past year Crash Course has been an immense and amazing part of my life during quarantine. And I hope it can be part of my life after quarantine. I'm going into college soon in about a year (this upcoming year is my Senior year), and I cannot, will not, and do not want to do anything to not watch Crash Course's videos, because darn it, I love learning! Hank and John, this is the kind of impact I think both of you should be proud to have--having someone figure out what they watch is so important they won't do anything to not do it simply because it brings something into their life they love doing. And that idea is awesome! At this rate, I think Crash Course could possibly be considered one of the most impactful things on KZbin...and maybe even the entire Internet someday! Seriously; that's how successful I think it might be eventually. You two have made something astonishing. Thank you for creating one of the best educational channels out there, so I can keep learning something every day, but also for the millions of people who are impacted by it. DFTBA, and keep on improving on it until it is its best, because there is a lot more impact Crash Course can have, and I am so excited to see where it goes next. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Side note: I just thought of this on Wednesday--I was watching the old videos from 2009, and before I had started from the very beginning. So, I noticed the old school explainer videos John did, and I thought "Is that the beginning of Crash Course?" Maybe, in a way, they were, because if those old videos explaining situations in the world hadn't been made, maybe John would not have had that idea. Just a thought.

So I’m kinda on the younger side of nerdfighters. My first introduction to you two was summer of 2016. I was nervous over starting AP world history, my first AP class as a sophomore. I watched John explain everything from agriculture to the Cold War. I loved it so much I branched out into the sciences and other crash course despite not taking a class for it. You two are not only a major factor to my success as an AP scholar, but both of you made an arrogant 16 year old think about the world complexly for really the first time in my short life. I’m now about to be 21 pre law student because of John’s series on US history and debate. I still watch crash course when I want to think complexly about new topics. If I could I would buy every singe coin in your stock without a thought. Thank you Green brothers❤️

Woah, You've uploaded early today, Hank! It's great to see the transcript and to see our very own domestic Prince-turned-Serial-Killer being mentioned there! John's right to say it's interesting but almost no one actually believes that here in Nepal. Like, we still aren't aware of any actual justification except "Mum and Dad won't let me marry this girl I like; well then, might as well kill every single relative i find and then kill myself. Seems fair to me" This was before I was born, and even after graduating high school, I'm so disappointed that we didn't ever actually learn about THIS massacre in history, let alone learning interestingly!

CC History and Astronomy were some of my favorite series. But it was your series on psychology that came exactly at the perfect time as, a year later, I was taking a supplementary university course on psychology, and I showed one of your vidoes to my professor who went on to show some of your videos from that series to the class. I don't know if he or how many other teachers used your videos to help further educate others, but it's been perhaps one of the greatest ideas to grace the internet.
