Prequel comics for movies are usually nothing to write home about, but the Sonic 2 comic has given fans a lot more to chew on than you might expect. Today I pick apart the stories, Easter eggs, and little bits of lore in this book!

It's nice to see Eggman trusting one of his allies enough to leave them a contingency plan in case something happens to him. The only other instance I can think of is Shadow back in SA2.

@@erichfiedler1481 i don't think that's what they're referring to. i think they mean when eggman sees team sonic has infiltrated, and when shadow goes to take care of it, he's stopped by eggman and told not to, as eggman sees this as something he should personally take care of (given his grudge with sonic). but before he leaves, he does tell shadow something along the lines of "if i don't come back, then i'm leaving the rest to you." it's not anything major, but it is a rare instance of eggman both acknowledging the possibility of his failure, as well as trusting someone else to finish his work should he fail. he probably trusted shadow due to him being a creation of gerald, someone he idolized.

Don't mistake covering every base for trust. I think even Jim Carrey robotnik would kill stone the moment he became an obstacle or it would be convenient. Robotnik making contingencies for contingencies sake is just a well executed character flaw. I wouldn't be surprised if he has a contingency for the event that stone failed, or died, that would carry out the work instead. It's one of the reasons he makes and abandons so many bases, even though it's a huge waste of time and resource to build and abandon a facility for years just in case he gets forced to use it.

it’s funny we always refer to our own planet as a backwater planet in the stories we make that involve life of on other planets and ours when we don’t even know if there are any other civilizations out there as advanced or more advanced than us. sure anyone who believes in aliens will say it’s ignorant to think we are the most advanced beings in the universe but space is so vast that it’s unlikely any other forms of life would meet let alone be able to communicate with each other. if there is life out there i think we are all stuck and separated by our own pockets of space which we will never be able to escape and explore out of sadly.

Agent Stone in the first movie looked like your usual Eggman henchmen (basically a wimp) but in this comic, he was absolutely savage and felt threatening, which was good for a change of pace.

The place Agent Stone works in is called the "Mean Bean", apparently frequented by Cop Wade. Considering the government probably froze all Robotnik's assets, a detached coffee shop would be good for gathering capitol and info, not to mention serve as a base of operations of some sort (Especially when you own the place)

I think Robotnik's story was maybe supposed to be a Mario parody, of all things. Building on the joke of "a mustached man in a world of mushrooms", they have him go into a cave, World 1-2, the critters that bite him look like little Piranha Plants, and the flamethrower = fire flower? @@tonyhakston536 I got 2 arguments. One is a feelings one and other a lore one. Let's start with the lore one. Unleashed & Forces. The other games could take place in on one planet but these two just have to take place on two separate planets. Unleashed clearly takes place on Earth and Forces takes place on what I will call Mobius but SEGA doesn't like that term. Where are all the Mobians (excluding Sonic & co) in Unleashed? We get to see the entire planet and there's no sign of any Mobian society on it. While Forces, the concept designers confirmed this taken place on Mobius, an alien planet without humans. There's even alien writing that they created to make this world look more alien. Where are the humans (except Eggman)? They can't be on the side of the planet we don't get to see because it's said in the game Eggman taken over the entire planet. Where is GUN in all of this? These two games obviously are on two separate planets that just makes no sense to me why it's now one planet like TailsTube said. Now the feeling argument. Game Apologist grew-up with Classic Sonic, SatAM & Archie. While I didn't necessarily grew-up with Adventure games but those are the games I prefer. I prefer Modern Sonic in a Sonic X & Sonic Movie style of world with humans. Classic Sonic, SatAM & early Archie feel foreign to me. I honestly think Sonic being an alien makes more sense in that context because why are there anthro-animals & normal animals in the same world? Sonic living on two planets. Human planet of Earth & the cartoon anthro planet makes more sense and is more appealing to me. I think one planet is boring and makes no sense and two planets make sense and make the lore more fun. There is the whole Echidna thing now that people that believe the one world say all the time. The Echidna Tribe could be ancient aliens and Gerald's studies could be on those aliens and their planet and stuff. I digress. The two worlds is now non-canon which is a same really. I thought it was fun and lined up with other universes like Sonic X, movies & Archie. I think the 2 worlds enrich the lore and makes it more interesting.

I love how they portrayed Knuckles in this comic. Again, like I've seen in your past videos' comment sections, one that stuck out to me was "Knuckles is 'street smart', not 'smart smart'". He know his way around everything, but isn't too knowledgeable or insightful into matters that he doesn't know or care about. That "smart-smart" would probably lean more on Tails (as we see later in the comic). Knuckles is stubborn, honorable, and determined echidna warrior with one goal and nothing's going to stop him or dissuade him from that goal.... Tails, being the iconic, smart, and clever little fox boy, is something I'm really glad to see. It also seems Robotnik has become more insane by eating those mushrooms and even being attacked by them later. Just a fun little "filler", in a sense, to prepare us for the movie. This is going to be AWESOME. >:D

I like the interpretation that the “zones” are full on planets now, as it never really made sense that these places are all like on islands (South Island, angel island, etc), but still take quite a few minutes for Sonic to travel through considering just how fast he really is. Plus this technically give an excuse for no transitions between stages, as they simply warp there. This obviously isn’t canon to the games, but I do like this idea.

"Hedgehog Day Afternoon" almost feels like a pilot episode for a Sonic Movie series. It even sets up Stone as a looming threat. With how cartoony some of the characters in Green Hills are, I would have loved a series like this, just showing how Sonic adapts to his new home.

I’ll be _that guy_ and say that my favourite story was Agent Stone’s, lol. I dunno, it was interesting to see how this version of Eggman rubbed off on him in following his self-serving ideology. It was kind of cool seeing him getting back at those bratty coffe staff members and setting up the shop for the events of the film. We don’t get competent Eggman lackeys who can stand on their own very often, as most of them are incompetent and disposable. I think this is what makes Stone my favourite Eggman/Human in the franchise. The other stories were fine too, it’s just that I’m not a huge sucker for lore anyway. But, Knuckle’s story was great by the mere fact that they’re doing our red boi some justice. I’m soo happy to see a serious “Street Smart” version of him again since Sonic X or the Archie days. This has definitely got me hyped for the movie for sure. I wouldn’t mind if they kept making more of these in between movie releases to keep this universe relevant and expanding.

the movie universe has more in common with Sonic The Comic than archie, I'd say. Theres villains and locations very similar to what we've seen so far in this comic and the first movie. Especially with tha chaotix cameo, the chaotix in StC live in the special zone which in that universe is another dimension with casinos, super heros and mob bosses.

I always figured Spring Yard was created by Eggman since you get closer to his base in the first game, but this means Spring Yard was always there, it was just another area used to slow down Sonic.

in the movie continuity, yes. in the game canon though i'm pretty certain that spring yard is indeed built by eggman, especially since there's a city in the background. Given that in the game lore, South Island is an island constantly teleporting around the world, I doubt there would be any human civilizations that lived on it in a modern time where they could build a very modern city on it.

Wow, I’m currently watching this after watching the second movie a (couple) times, and my heart kinda stopped seeing other characters beside tails and knuckles. Like vector?!!!? Wow- insane. I only really expected the main characters, with the limit being silver and maybe blaze.

My favorite Knuklesis the one from sonic the comic, he is so adventurous yet he feels goodhearted, he can quite smart and takes control of the situation he is rather fast, not matter the odd the danger is.

As I'm watching his videos over the years, Game Apologist tends to greatly look over Dr. Eggman/Robotnik whenever he focuses on him. Dr. Eggman's portion had Mario World 1-2 vibes and Dr. Robotnik's flame thrower was like a Fire Flower. Maybe the Pre-Quill comic doesn't have a lot of interest for Nick but the comic had more to talk about for Dr. Robotnik than what Nick went over. Dr. Eggman is my favorite rival & villain in entertainment and his entire concept is possibly the greatest big bad supervillain for "long-running" entertainment; Games, Comics, Shows, Movies, etc. Idk, I believe Dr. Eggman should be 2nd in coverage only to Sonic. 22:41 "Obviously I could have done without the Robotnik story." Ouch, Nick. Enjoy your rest ^^ I hope whatever you cover next makes you happy.
