Scourge was hilarious to watch. 'goofing around' was short for switching places with the real sonic, and flirting with every girl including bunny who had a boyfriend. He ended up convincing Fiona Fox to play both Sonic and Tails, breaking both of their hearts and their relationship with each other apart. Scourge and Fiona never break up and Fiona even helped Scourge find his confidence after being pummeled in jail. She even built an entire team for him. Scourge's girlfriend track record is cleaner than Sonic's! XD

I tried the newer comics, they...were too silly for me, I guess they're fine for people who like sonic's "default genre" (crazy japanese cyberpunk) but I'm not really a fan of that myself and I feel like too much of the mythologized aspect to the world is just gone now and it's tilted too far into sci-fi for me to like. TBF, I always hated that about the main games too, and the comics were initially how I came to care about sonic at all because its original genre wasn't doing it for me. Believe it or not, the comics are what actually made me a fan of Sonic. I get how weird they come off as to someone who hasn't read them, but I didn't mind most of the goofy ideas and characters, Sonic just inherently is a goofy concept, and the comics embraced that and did some interesting things story and character wise (though I do feel the Penders era was more dumb than interesting). I'm a big X-men guy, so having a big cast of characters doesn't bother me, and the writing on the series, especially when Ian Flynn took over, actually got me invested in the stories and characters in a way that the games didn't. I've actually done a few videos on my channel about them if you'd like to see more of what I'm talking about.

There were a couple exceptions, but aside from Nicole's redesign by Tania Del Rio, I'm pretty sure all those exceptions were Ian Flynn characters. Oh, and it wasn't just Ken who went after Archie. Scott Fulop was also trying to claim copyrighted ownership over Mammoth Mogul.

As much as I hated what Penders did with all of the lawsuits (and his storytelling in general), I actually do really miss the characters he came up with mainly because they received a great deal of overall improvement after he left. If it's any indication for how far they came, hands-down my favorite Archie character to ever exist is Geoffrey. Probably my favorite character in general if I really wanted to be bitter about the characterization of a bit of the current cast--not that I'd think it wrong for anyone to like them or anything. Point is, I've actually taken a year to read through all those comics with my closest friend sans the Knuckles original series because... frankly we couldn't force ourselves to do that. BUT we actually want to go through them again because they got so good pre and post genesis wave. Not that I really need to say that LMAO

I was really starting to get into the lore they were building with the Mer Mobians, not to mention the fact that Scratch, Grounder, Coconuts, Breezie, and Von Schlemmer became characters right before the end. Although I imagine fish people will be easier to recreate so there SHOULD be some similar aesthetic coming about at some point, right? Probably not for a while, but still. However, the lack of humans and the new multiverse thing where they only exist in their own world irks me... But at least it’s super early in IDW Sonic’s run, so who knows for certain how long things will be barred off completely (looking at the fact that Mighty, Ray, nor Eggman Nega will ever make an appearance)

Unfortunately many of the post genesis wave stories were just adaptations of the games, which is fucking lazy and unoriginal. Quite a lot of the mobian sea animals were just reskinned versions of existing characters.

Microbicorb 559 I’d agree if they were actually unoriginal. They took the concept of Sonic unleashed and only grabbed the main aspect of the Dark/Light Gaias, Werehog, and the planet breaking apart. I guess if you want to call it unoriginal that they had to use ideas from the games, then that’s on you, but I pretty much enjoyed all of that stuff-the Champion’s arc is hands-down my favorite archie arc to date. Plus, last I checked, there was never a tournament-styled fight going on in Unleashed, nor were one of the temples located in the ocean. That’s still my opinion, though. I didn’t see any unoriginality in how they treated using plotpoints from the game, but I could also be looking through rose-tinted glasses being that Sonic Unleashed has and might always be my favorite Sonic game. However I actually don’t understand your point about the sea Mobians designs being reskins of characters that already exist. Mind pointing that out for me? And I’m not speaking sarcastically, I’m genuinely curious.

Man, I really need to get back into rereading the series. I originally got into near the start of Flynn's run (right where that horse character died, actually), so I never really appreciated how weird the cast and story were previously. Really, hats off to Flynn for taking the mess and somehow making it work. Regardless of how terrible the history was, I'm still sad that it all got retconned in the end. Btw you mentioning the Super Genesis Wave and bringing up the list of deleted characters made me think of Ken Penders as Thanos and that made me laugh way more than I should've, so thanks for that!

But that's kind of the problem right there. Even though the writing (may be) good so far, the issue with IDW's interpretation is that it will probably end up not lasting very long. You see even with all of its insanity and plot issues, the archie series lasted for over 20 years, which is a pretty damn big accomplishment for a game character comic. But a lot of what made those comics interesting was that most of it was not from the games, it was its own unique storyline...just based on sonic. The archie reboot tried to tie itself more to the games when it could and it didn't end up lasting very long for certain reasons. I personally just feel that IDW is just going to go nowhere unless they establish things not based solely on the games alone. I mean its pretty closely connected to sonic forces at this point and that....isn't a good sign.

Yes we had 2 Robotniks. The first got so angry over losing all the time he created a erase everyone doomsday device and almost killed Sally Acorn by proxy. See the End Game arc where only he got erased due to his nephew arranged sabotage. Robotnik Mk2 the current version, once tried to invade the prime Archie Sonic Universe but got beaten back by a Sonic and Robotnik team up. Later MK2 would come back and take over the original empire and even briefly bring back the original for a one off failed scheme to good cop bad cop the freedom fighters. The original Robotnik's fate was to be lost to the place his doomsday weapon sent people thanks to Sally reprogramming MK2's device.

Most of those characters that Ken Penders created did needed to be purged out of existence, but I did at least liked the designs and "some" character traits of Julie-Su, Scourge, Fiona Fox, and the Wolf Pack Twins post Ken Penders writing.
